What is the best online radio station in the world?
I4d like something that plays plenty of Will Oldham, Gillian Welsh and things like that that I haven't heard yet?

WFMU wins hands down, with many shows offering a wide variety of esoteric music, and a massive archive of all shows broadcast in the last 10 years. There's more great music in it than you can listen to in several lifetimes. For example:
- Shrunken Planet (a 3 hr show, usually 1 hr of folk, many Gillian Welch songs)
- The Radio Thrift Shop (hosted by a country/folk singer)
- Secret Museum of the Air (music from around the world, much of it traditional)
- Antique Phonograph Music Program
- Thomas Edison's Attic

Once upon a time, I would have said WWVA in Wheeling, West Virginia; and WLS in Chicago. Alas, these stations seem to be mostly a "talk radio" format nowadays. In their heyday, WWVA and WLS introduced a lot of wonderful music.
I also have a soft spot in my heart for WJR in Detroit, another classic station that's gone "talk radio." These three were all "clear channel" stations. They broadcasted at 50,000 watts, and were assigned radio frequencies that had little competition. As a result, you could hear these stations halfway across the continent when you listened at night. I used to do a lot of nighttime radio listening when I was a kid.

When I was in the Coast Guard we were in the Davis Straits between Labrador and Greenland, and WWVA was the only station we could receive. I loved it, the city boys hated it.

My favourite station is http://bluegrasscountry.org/ for some of the finest bluegrass music. My favourite show to listen to is the legendary bluegrass radio presenter Ray Davis. Ray plays a fantastic selection of recordings of most of the top US bluegrass artistes over the years that recorded sessions in his basement. Ray is in his seventy fifth year and has introduced stars like Hank Williams and many others over the years. The Ray Davis show airs in the UK at 8pm till 11pm on Monday to Friday and on Sundays from 3pm till 6pm.

I have no idea what is the world's best radio station...

But CBC in Canada is pretty good as they go. It is devoid of advertising, being publicly financed, and they have a lot of good content that you won't hear on the commercial stations.

I don't know if it's the world's best, but it deserves a nomination:

CKUA in Edmonton, Alberta

"World's best, greatest, etc., etc.," of course is nonsense- the station, music, or person named depends upon interest.

I listen to a variety of stations. One of my favorites at present is Catalunya Radio (catmusica, the Catalan classic station in Barcelona).
It offers two channels; if you don't like one there is an alternative.

The language spoken is Catalan, but "the music is the thing."

Oh, yes there is that thing called the BBC. And Suisseromand. And....

Since getting a Roberts WM201 internet radio I've been spoilt for choice. Most recent favorite is TradCan: Musiques folk, trad, populaires traditionnelles, de Belgique, France, Ecosse, Irlande, Scandinavie, Italie et autres contrées. La radio du Canard Folk.

Honourable mention- Radio Heartland, Hober, Bebop Nation, Linas Jazz.

Thank God for BBC Radio 3 & Radio 4.
