Lyr Req: Ballad of Harry Lewis (Allan Sherman)

Subject: Lady Franklin's Lament - Chords?
From: Mountain Dog

Does anyone have chords for this lovely mournful tune? Ive found two different versions of the lyrics in DT, but neither had the chords.

John Renbourne did a beautiful, haunting version on the album "A Maid in Bedlam" , but I have the tune kept only in my memory, not on vinyl, and thus i'm still searching for the "lost chords". (Neither moody nor blue, I'll be happier still when I can piece together a finger-pickin' good version with chords that can carry the tune.)

Many thanks for any help on this.

Discussion of Rindacellar reminded me also of great Allan Sherman. Does anyone have the lyrics to the "Drapes of Roth" (parody of the Battle Hymn of the Republic)? All I can recall is that after the fire they were sifting through the warehouse where the drapes of roth were stored, and it ends with a flourish on "french-fried gaberdine". Thanks.

Here they are, great song:

THE BALLAD OF HARRY LEWIS
Tune: The Battle Hymn of the Republic
As recorded by Allan Sherman on "My Son, the Folk Singer" (1962)

1. I'm singing you the ballad of a great man of the cloth.
His name was Harry Lewis and he worked for Irving Roth.
He died while cutting velvet on a hot July the fourth.
But his cloth goes shining on.

CHORUS: Glory, glory, Harry Lewis,
Glory, glory, Harry Lewis,
Glory, glory, Harry Lewis,
His cloth goes shining on!

2. Oh, Harry Lewis perished in the service of his lord.
He was trampling through the warehouse where the drapes of Roth are stored.
He had the finest funeral the union could afford.
And his cloth goes shining on! CHORUS

3. Although a fire was raging, Harry stood by his machine,
And when the fireman broke in, they discovered him between
A pile of roasted Dacron and some French-fried gabardine.
His cloth goes shining on! CHORUS

Do I have to d/l the database in order to get the tunes? How can I play them?

Dear Stuart, mnay many thanks. About tunes, you usually have to go elsewhere, unless you ask for the chords specifically. There are some site that do that directly (have tablature, for example). Yours, Peter

We keep thinking we will have the tune problem licked any day now. In the meantime, you can download the database to be able to play the tunes to over half of the songs.

This song is in the DT under the title THE DRAPES OF ROTH, attributed to "Alan Sherman".

However, according to this Allan Sherman discography, the correct title of this song is THE BALLAD OF HARRY LEWIS. And the spelling is Allan, not Alan.
