BS: Windchimes, rude things neighbours do

I know Bobert's former neighbour fired guns in his direction and my complaint pales by comparison but WTF is with the windchimes? How on earth can anyone think windchimes are acceptable? My neighbour thinks it's ghastly that someone keeps stealing her fucking windchimes in the dead of night. WTF does she not understand? I am sure the culprit would rather just tie the fuckers in knots as a demonstration of how pissed off he is but that would not be prudent as it increases the chance of being caught red handed.

And in the past few years the shops have been flogging outdoor "firepits" which are cast iron and screened so one can enjoy a wood fire in one's yard. The smoke gets in neighbours' laundry hanging on the clothesline and gets in neighbours' lungs. WTF is wrong with these rude people?

Anyone else? Anything else?

All my neighbors have either dogs that bark at me or cats that shit in my yard. Included are a doctor, two school teachers and a nurse, so inconsiderate people come in all sizes, shapes and colors.

Parties with boozers in their driveway across from our bedroom window, though current renters are not guilty. They do have a really bright light above their side door which also faces our bedroom window. If I want the window open, which I do, it's try to put up with the light. I've thought about talking to them, but they are quiet and leave others alone, so...I shrug my shoulders and let the cat sit in the window just enough to block the light.:-)

I have wind chimes, but they are not huge and they are nowhere near the edges of our house, so not close to any neighbour's. I have a friend who has several sets which measure anywhere from 1-5 feet long. LOUD and rude, yes!

A near by neighbour's visiting son parks his heating oil truck on the street and leaves the loud diesel engine running for upwards of an hour. He also leaves his two way radio turned up loud, so he can hear it from inside. Is that rude enough?

A few years back, a friend complained that his neighbour parked his rusty "beater" car in front of his house each day. Oddly enough, when he bought a newer vehicle, he then parked it in front of his own house.

From Christine Lavin's website:

Wind Chimes
from Sometimes Mother Really Does Know Best

Wind Chimes
by Christine Lavin -- in English

This island is so beautiful
this must be paradise
the hotel is lovely
the staff is super nice
my room has a terrace
that overlooks the sea
the sun is bouncing on the water
lucky lucky me

I close my eyes for a minute
in the distance I can hear
the whispering of wind chimes
so far and yet so near
the sound perfumes the air
the ocean sighs below
a perfect moment here on earth
I don't want to let it go

wind chimes
floating on the breeze
wind chimes
wafting through the trees
wind chimes
the sound of angels cloud dancing
wind chimes
there is nothing as entrancing

I'm swimming in the ocean
I'm lying on the beach
I'm reading a good thick book
I'm eating a peach
I'm walking on the shoreline
I'm picking up pink shells
the whole time somewhere out there
is that the sound of tiny bells?

No, it's wind chimes
floating on the breeze
wind chimes
tickling the trees
wind chimes
the sound of angels ballet dancing
wind chimes
is anything as enchanting

BRIDGE
I eat my dinner on the terrace
watch that burning sun
extinguished by the ocean
evening has begun
I turn down the blankets
climb into my feather bed
but something's keeping me awake
is it deep thoughts in my head? No, it's . . .

wind chimes ]
wafting on the breeze
wind chimes
annoying all the trees
wind chimes
the sound of angels polka dancing
wind chimes
a sound I once thought life enhancing

I close all the windows
but that tinkling sound comes through
I put a pillow over my head
I put in earplugs, too
I open up the minibar
drink tiny vodka, tiny gin
but nothing helps
I'm trapped here with the incessant din of

wind chimes
clanKing on the breeze
wind chimes
killing all the trees
wind chimes
a sound I once thought so enchanting
wind chimes
angels Irish step dancing

Too much of a good thing
is too much, simply that
at times like this
I'm glad I travel
with a baseball bat
Now I'm knocking down the wind chimes
within a mile of this place
Now I'm going back to bed
with a smile on my face

Crickets
crackling through the night
crickets
cricking with all their might
crickets
a dull yet monstrous roar
crickets
a sound that makes me long for

Wind chimes
floating on the breeze
wind chimes
filtered through the trees
wind chimes
the sound of angels belly dancing
wind chimes
there is nothing as entrancing as wind chimes . . .

Catshit is managable.

Barking dogs... if they bark at you, not so bad. If they bark at length because they want back in the house, I like to let them back in without knocking and say, "Guess you didn't hear Fluffy barking for the last hour. You're welcome." That freaks them out. I had a problem with such and finally thought I might try it. It seems to have worked so far. If their door is locked, I knock and explain that I was worried about Fluffy being in distress. That works too.

Parties... no way after 10PM. I go right over and tell them I gotta get my sleep. If they get owly I remind them there are bylaws and that one bylaw says ALL QUIET at 11PM and all quiet means all quiet. If I am really pissed, a video camera on a tripod in the living room windo works a treat. Works for barking dogs too.

5' chimes? I would steal those if I was that sort.

I live in the middle of nowhere...nearest neighbors are sheep and we rather like it that way. Our *neighbors* are folks from NJ who come up here to hunt. The last few years, they have been bringing their helicopter and doing low fly bys. On one hand, it's loud and annoying. On the other hand it's fun to watch knowing that the idiots just scared any nearby deer into hiding.

Michelle

PS. I just got some beautiful windchimes for my birthday! I do like them...but only in small quantities!

I have council houses all around me...filled with 'chavs' yet...I hear nothing at night save for an owl hooting and the leaves of my trees rustling.

My dog barks.
The seagulls screech.
Babies cry.
Children play in the street.
And every night a blackbird sings to me, his little head thrust upwards towards the early evening stars, sunsetyellow beak twittering away.

It's nice, at times, because it reminds me I'm alive.

Next door they have a trickling fountain and windchimes. I love the sound of both, they carry a sense of freedom on the breeze.

In the mornings I'm woken by the early shift coming in to help the autistic kids next door..."Mornin' Chris!"...it's nice.

The old lady underneath me falls asleep watching her TV, so sometimes I go to sleep with all sorts of sounds coming through the floorboards..and Nanny shuffles back and forth to the bathroom in the night, carpet slippers shiffleshuffling on the floor.

I used to have neighbours with 4 children, who'd scream at their mother, telling her to fuck off. I'd hear her sobbing through the wall. I went and spoke to the 4 boys, told them what I thought of them, what bullies they'd become, how much their Mum needed them, how hard she'd fought to get them back from when they were kidnapped by their Saudi father. They changed. I'd hear laughter coming through the walls...smiles on their faces....

It's good to hear. It's a privilege, in a way. Far better than being stuck in a silent world.

In Horrabridge I'd go to sleep to the sound of the weir outside the window, and when it rained it would turn into a raging torrent, thundering along...but even so, through it all I could still hear the church bell ringing out the hour, all night long. God, how I loved to hear that bell!

I wish someone had chickens round here, because I'd love to wake to the sound of chickens...

One day I won't hear a thing.....so I want to store all these sounds up, wrap them in gold cloth, pack them next to my soul and unwrap them when I get to wherever we go, take them out and play them...and hang the windchime up for everyone to hear, to remind them that once, they lived in a beautiful world, filled with sounds and noises and things that went bump in the night.

:0)

Next-door neighbour, on a beautiful, warm, sunny day, decided to spray all his fences with something called Creocote. It absolutely stinks, a fumey, chemical smell. We've shut all the windows but the smell is unbearable. My husband has been vomiting and my throat is raw. I'm worried that this stuff is toxic, possibly carcinogenic. It's 10.20pm and the smell is worse if anything. All this for a stupid fence? I feel desperate, as I'm sure we won't sleep tonight.
Neighbour across the road's dog barked until 1am two nights ago, I phoned in the end to ask them to take it indoors. She said they'd been asleep! Lucky them. She phoned ME today to rant and rave about my cheek in phoning at 1am!!! Why are people so inconsiderate?

OK, I have a confession....I adore the smell of bonfires. It takes me right back to being with my Dad in the autumn time, him showing me how to stack the leaves, how to burn them, after a hard day sweeping them all up into piles...Dad putting the hot poker into the incinerator and all the scarlet sparks whizzing out as the air rushed in..and the smoke coming out through the funnel top...Ah, happy days..

And creosote? Oh, Eliza, I feel for you both and hope it soon passes, but I used to stand next to fences that had been creosoted, breathing it in deeply, LOVED the smell of it! Even today it calls to me...but you don't smell it that often now, as the new fence paints have taken its place..

I'm an ace at making bonfires! :0)

Subject: RE: BS: Windchimes, rude things neighbours do

Chainsaws would upset me though, not for the noise, but for the terrible pain they'd inflict on the tree and the desperate space they'd leave in their wake. Imagine being a squirrel the next morning....jump...no trees! Chainsaws should be banned, then maybe we'd still have our rainforests..

Besides, if the trees get chopped, you can't hang the windchimes up. :0)

Creocote is a more recent (and less toxic)form of the very toxic creosote. It is marketed as less toxic, but there is limited information on some human exposure impacts.

My mad neighbor cut down and ripped out approx 20 feet of my 6 foot high hedge convinced the dumb coppers she had a right to do it to stop me blocking her light. Told them she couldn't have done it anyway as she could lift her arms above her head. The dumb coppers told me I was lying when I said she had done it.

Pointed to the video surveillance cameras and the sign that said there was video recording that had been there for some years. Told coppers to take me to court for annoying the mad cow, which they were threatening to do. Said I would play the tapes (of her at work in my yard) in court, not only do court appearances waste large chunks of their time, but then having shown the tapes would make a CMC (Criminal Misconduct Commission) not about them, but about their Sargent for either not training them properly, or for sending them out where it appeared that some sort of police corruption was going on due to political interference with the Police.

Yep this is the same woman I written about before... she had those aluminum window shutters installed a few days later, that block her view of my yard and the light...

Doesn't seem to have come in the yard since then ... pity - I'd happily let her mow my grass....

I think I win this ball clanking contest ... :-P

there is a local noise in the park where they have several 10,000 watt stacks horizontally aimed over the heads of the audience - the side spill alone gives 100-120dB(C) in the mosh pit! The rest blasts the town and can be heard miles away!

They are a 'Christian drug and alcohol free rock gospel music festival' that allegedly bring in millions of dollars, yet they claim they can barely break even financially!

Their supporters have a strong 'fuck you' attitude too - they openly tell people to leave town or shut up!

We now live in a very self centered society, and the more righteously religious they claim to be, the more selfish they appear to be.

Really you should try the screaming swearing neighbours (I live in a flat) who slam their doors and throw things and abuse solvents (my bathroom smells of spray paint more often than not).

From: Donuel

Society has become so compartmentalized and fragmented that each lonely neighbor is secretly or opely at odds with each other neighbor and only bonds with on or two on occasion to bitch about a different neighbor. The result of this lifestyle is a alienated community that does not itself or each other. Walk alone. work alone. You could punish neighbors by ostracising them, but sometimes there is so little community there is no one to truely do any ostracising.

It leads to heart disease.

Japan has a more communal life style and may have less heart disease for that reason as well as the fish diet.

I have seen the lord of the flies rumor machine actively seek to cause neighbors ahrm. I have seen neighbors violate the first law of robots. Ehtnic purity, fundamentalism, bigotry or plain ol simple RUDENESS which leads to more of the same in retribution.

I be a good ol bacchanal or burning man party or bon fire or block party would help. But then again I have seen how block parties can serve the rumor traders more than the bond makers.

I guess the best cure would be a sing along.

Can you picture "those" neighbors doing a sing along with you?

But she did sing Onward Christian Soldiers at the top of her voice after midnight in the yard by the fence, after tying bunches of herbs and burning candles to the fence, and chanting things like "Oh Goddess of the Earth, drive this evil from my land!". She was having issues with Gravity, and water flowing down hill on the natural slope on to her property ....

I wasn't game to look. I wanted to believe that she was wearing clothes....

Lizzie you like bonfires too? So do I and the smell of creosote too especially towards the end of a summer evening is gorgeous it was a craving of mine while pregnant not deep sniffing it (honest) just catching wafts of it in the air. Likewise windchimes gently blowing on a warm summer evening is heaven not so great when the wind picks up though. The only gripe I have is when boys show off with their flashy sports cars and rev up the engine so loud to show what a good powerful car they have got and it always seems to happen on a Sunday when I'm taking a leisurely chilled Sunday afternoon stroll.

1. DH and I sit down to a nice dinner.

2. Dogs next door, whose sense of smell is superb, detect food and want to go into the back yard and look for it.

3. Owner thinks dogs are indicating that they need to go outside and poop.

4. Owner lets dogs out, then yells "Go poddy! Go poddy!" If they do, she croons "Goooood poddy. Goood poddy. Good girl!"

My upstairs neighbors would leave the front door unlocked (not a great neighborhood), had knock-down drag-out screaming fights in the middle of the night, drank too much all the time, had a steady stream of people (some friends, some friends of friends, some they barely knew) coming in at all hours of the day and night, slam doors, smoke in the common areas and had 6 cats and a dog in a 3rd floor walk-up apartment. They got evicted in January. :-)

My new upstairs neighbors are young girls who slam the front door. I'll live with it.

A variant on the theme:
Our little 2-and-a-half-horse town has outdoor concerts on the square at the old-old courthouse one night of most weeks in the summer. Usually not loud rock at all. Inevitably, there are very few minutes between the instances of kids with souped up engines demonstrating just how loudly they can rev up on the street just a few feet away. I have recurring fantasies of stepping out as they stop in traffic and finding out if it's true that a .357 (or .44 mag) can bust an engine block.

Patsy, you are my long lost sister! ;0)   Tar sends me to happy places too, the smell of it, that is, not the stickiness..Maybe we should start a new perfume factory up! lol

Greg, Chickens at 3.30am? Oh, heck, that wouldn't bother me. It's nice to think of them out there, awake already, itching to start their day.

Tam, yes, your message reminds me of the folks who moved to the beautiful town of Totnes, a few miles away, and where I've been today actually. They were lucky enough to be able to afford a house close to one of the pretty churches in town, but...on moving in, they were aghast to find the bell rang out the hours all night long.

So...they decided to go to court over it. Luckily, I think God was the Judge that day and it was thrown out of court, but the people of Totnes could have lost their much beloved Church Bell, purely because of someone being selfish.

By the way, I should point out that although my dog barks, he does most of it inside the house, and if he barks in the garden for too long, he's called in immediately. Annoyingly, a new cat has moved into the neighbourhood, who sits on the old wall at the back, just out of reach of Tigger, sticking out his tongue and waggling his whiskers at the poor dimented canine! Poor ol' Tiggs! As if he didn't have enough to contend with the 3 cats he already has to live with! LOL

And bonfires are always lit as dusk falls, only ever to burn garden rubbish. I can't get to a rubbish dump and I have much wood each year from my curly willow tree which sheds its' branches willynilly. Only a few bonfires worth a year though...and to be honest, surely one quick bonfire does less damage than getting a car out, using up petrol, putting all that into the atmosphere etc..purely to get to the dump? Dunno, perhaps I'm wrong there...but it seems ludicrous to me when I see all these cars taking stuff to the dump, then all the lorries, JCBs moving it around, loading it up and taking it to other places..so many carbon footprints whizzing back and forth...but then I think part of me is still hankering after the 17th century... :0)

Oh..and my windchimes are indoors, by my kitchen window, but I love the sound of other people's....it lets you know what The Breeze is doing, whether she has a smile on her care, or a frown..

As I write this, my blackbird is singing at the top of his voice outside...Magic! :0)

Kind of depends on the type of wind chime. Big clanky one or little tinkling one?

In the middle of the night, take a pot of melted paraffin and a feather pillow (opened) over. Dunk the wind chime in paraffin and then in pillow case.

A friends's mum was worried about kids from school at back of her property catching her fence alight when truanting for a fag.

She always kept a bucket of water on her side of fence and threw it over when kids were there having a smoke.

LC... "Annoyingly, a new cat has moved into the neighbourhood, who sits on the old wall at the back, just out of reach of Tigger, sticking out his tongue and waggling his whiskers at the poor dimented canine!"

A neighbour had a cross-eyed Siamese who would sit in the hedge and tease Bear (half Newf) who could get to about a foot from the cat. Bear would bark like mad until I brought him in. One day, after complaining to the neighbour a few times and asking him to come get his cat and to try to admonish it I had enough and I lengthened Bear's (100 grade brass) chain by four feet.

Next day, said neighbour came looking for his cat. I went into the barn and looked around...no cat. As I exited the barn I looked in Bear's den which was a hole he dug under the barn door. I told the neighbour I had seen no sign of his cat. The neighbour left.

I had a hell of a time getting the cat's head away from bear who just wanted to play with it like he would a tennis ball.

Our neighbourhood is mostly people who leave each other alone. A couple of times when we've obviously needed some immediate help, the folks across the street have come right over. Everyone but us has dogs that bark, but they are mostly taken it right away. Even the nanny goat next door is docile and quiet. The main complaint of any of us is people, coming through on our street to the new subdivision which has sidewalks (we don't) etc., driving as though they are racing in the Indy 500. Bonfires dump loads of carbon back into the atmosphere. Composting vegetation puts it back into the soil and fertilizes more trees that will suck up more carbon.

I, too, own a chainsaw. Some of those gaping holes once held dead trees that were a danger to people or property. A couple of years ago, a family was killed while camping by a dead tree that fell on them during a storm. Could have been prevented by a chainsaw earlier.

Gnu,

I am not sure what exact message you are trying to pass on in your last post? Maybe I misunderstand it?

Are you complaining about a neighbours bad behaviour? Or, are you merely demonstrating a personal lack of compassion (demonstrated by the actions of a macho dog)for animals owned by others?

I am puzzled when some animal owners show such concern (and even love)for their pets, and at the same time show a lack of concern for the feeling for pets owned by others, or the owners themselves. I often see this when dog owners entice their pets to attack cats, or for bigger pets to attack smaller ones. :(

The problem is that the noise in the park has powerful (possibly corrupt) political friends - even the police have said privately that if that noise level came from a party or car, the offending equipment would be seized under the noise laws.

gnu is presenting himself as a particularly trifling, hateful idiot. I must say, it's most disturbing. I also get the feeling that gnu is probably the most hateful neighbor out of all the ones he lives among--but, of course, it's all their fault. They have windchimes that make that infernal noise and won't take them down when he demands it. They have mean cats that sit on walls and force his half-demented dog to to become fully demented by doing absolutely nothing. And when those neighbors won't do as gnu demands of them--well--they're just asking for it is all.

What I find particularly funny on this thread is that the ones who accuse me of being a nasty, mean person are all complaining about their neighbors and what assholes they are and how the cops have to be called to stop them from going at each other's throats. I've been living in my neighborhood since '98 and have never had a cross word with any of my neighbors. It's not that they don't sometimes exhibit annoying behavior, but the idea of getting in their faces about it is not going to solve anything. Oh--and I live in windchime city, practially every porch has them. Doesn't bother me in the slightest.

gnu writes to me: "People like you piss me off. You are a worse problem than asshole neighbours with no brains. You actually think my asshole neighbours are within their rights to assault me with their noise ALL NIGHT AND DAY LONG?."

Assualting you with their noise all day and night??? A windchime??? A person with a windchime is an asshole with no brains? And I'm even worse because I told you go move to the country if it bothers that much if you can take the chirping of crickets?

gneu responds: "Crickets I can understand... you?...I certainly can't understand your rudeness."

What rudeness? I said go move to the country if you want absolute quiet or do the sounds of crickets piss you off too? And that makes me even worse then the brainless asshole with a windchime who is so fortunate to be living next to the ever-stable, even-tempered gnu.

gnu writes: 'Gee... there it is. It's that "fuck you" attitude. It's that "I don't give a shit if I annoy you. I can do whatever I want even if it is rude and obnoxious. Even when I don't have to. What are you gonna do about it eh?"'

So I suppose if I went to your house and told you to shut your goddamn dog up and if I hear it bark one more goddamn time, I'm going to shoot the fucker right through the head, you'd apologize and promise to keep the brute quiet for my well-being. Am I warm, gnu?

gnu writes: "Do you try to bully your neighbours like you try to bully me on this thread?"

When did I bully you?? Nobody bullied anybody--get over it. You have a serious persecution complex. Everybody in the neighborhood is out to get poor, little gnu--is that it? Awww, poor baby. Forced to listen to windchimes and watch cats sit on walls. Must really suck to be you.

gnu writes: 'As for "pissing me off"? Piss off.'

Why do I get the feeling that you've spoken such words to your neighbors many, many times. After all, they're all out to get you.

I never had a problem with any neighbours in all of the many places, flats, etc I lived before the lady next door moved in. One of the neighbors even put on paper that the neighbourhood had been a friendly one with no such problems before she moved in (he even found her prowling around in his yard after midnight) before he died. Funny she told some of the neighbors when she was speaking to them, before she fell out with THEM how she had lived in a block of units and had to move out 'because everybody hated her and was always nasty to her'...

If you make your neighbors lives unbearable in the US, the courts can order you to move. It has happened many times. In fact, I just read about it again a couple of weeks ago. In some cases, it's necessary--the parties involved are so at war that violence is going to break out if something isn't done. And that's happened many times as well.

The case I refer to happened in my state. A 7-year-old girl was dying of a disease. There was some kind of kiddie party at the girl's house and a neighbor was furious that her children didn't get invitations even though the girl's mother told her that her kids were welcome. This woman then posted mocking death notices about the girl on her Facebook page. On Halloween, she put a coffin in front of the girl's house. She also poked fun of the girl's mother who had died of the same disease. Public outcry forced her to issue a public apology but she continued to cause trouble and, at one point, tried to run one of her neighbors over with her car. She was arrested and the judge said, "Move." And you have to move or the state will move you--into a nice comfy jail cell.

I moved out of the building, because of a nut job neighbor who gave me all kinds of insane grief, played cat and mouse games, and liked to show up as I was coming out of the shower. I do not miss that loon.

The old gent who lives next door to me, likes to call the police. He has trouble backing up his minivan. (I learned that the hard way, after he did in my front bumper.) I think I have mentioned before though about the pub I used to go in. A real loud-mouthed, obnoxious idiot started to go in. Unfortunatley he was friends with the landlord. A couple of people complained - and got banned from the pub. More people found that life was easier if they found the idiot 'funny but harmeless' as the landlord did and started to act in the same way. Lots of people left until, in the end, the landlord was left on his own with idiots and fools. The pub is now a solictors office oddly enough...

Tar is a lovely smell too and I used to love the smell of coal tar soap and even petrol coming from the pumps, my dad used to fill up before we headed off on a trip to the seaside and the smell as it glugged into the car meant that we were set for a long trip. The smell of cut grass and hay is another favourite and of course the smell of the seaside. Some people hate the smell of manure but to me it shows that you are well and truly in the countryside.

I suppose the only thing that gets up my nose are the odd few who cannot hold their drink and make what should be a nice evening a nightmare for everyone else but thankfully only a minority.

Patsy, about the Creocoat (new name for product permitted in place of Creosote) We have both been vomiting and my throat is now raw. We haven't slept for two nights as the fumes are absolutely unbearable. My washing off the clothesline stinks, and in spite of the lovely weather we can't sit out in the garden or do any gardening. In a minute we're going out in the car to somewhere where we can breathe, we'll stay out as long as possible. I feel ill and tearful. Has anyone the right to put their neighbours through all this? We coated OUR fences with odour-free water-based fencepaint, it's just as effective. My three cats, by the way, look ill too, they're not eating. I'm worried about the possible long-term effects of these chemicals, eg cancer.

Creosote is nasty stuff. It's health and environmental impacts are well known. In most locals, creosote is illegal in residential applications and is illegal or mostly restricted for industrial use.

While Creocote is new and marketed as OK for certain residential uses, because it is new limited research has been done on it's human health impacts. It presents a hazard to aquatic life.

Thank you so much Dorothy for your concern. We stayed out near the sea for the day and breathed fresh air, and when we got home, the fumes had diminished a bit, but still unpleasant. Ed T, I understand what you're saying, that this is a new product and can't have been tested for long-term effects yet. It's definitely petroleum-based, as when it started, I first thought our oil tank had ruptured! I wish such products could be banned for domestic use and restricted to industrial sites. Is it really necessary to spray it on a garden fence?
The worrying thing is, a lot of children have arrived to CAMP in the garden right among the smelly fences, they're having a barbecue at the moment. I do hope they aren't risking serious health problems. Their Dad must be a lunatic IMO!!

Ed... every day over a long period of time, the cat sat in the hedge and teased the dog... even pissed on the dog. The dog would nearly choke itself unconcious, or so I was told my the little old lady on the other side of the property. I asked the owner of the cat to TRY to do something... come get the cat and admonish it... anything. I was met with a "fuck you" attitude. Other neighbours complained, including that little old lady, about the dog (BTW, it wasn't MY dog, it was my landlord's dog) barking for extended periods of time during the day while we were at work. The little old lady was more concerned for the dog than she was about the barking.

I didn't sic the dog on the cat... I let nature take it's course because the owner of the cat was not willing to lift a finger to help out.

I had three cats and I trained them all very well. I put a sandbox in my yard and kept it clean so they wouldn't shit elsewhere unless they were caught short. I told all my neighbours to tell me if they had ANY problems with my cats. If a neighbour told me that my cat   shat on their property, I would take the cat over, pick up the shit, make the cat smell it and admonish it and then take the cat to the sandbox and deposit the shit and tell the cat,"THAT is where you shit!" I would go after them with a water gun if I saw them after birds. I would do the same if I saw them in somebody's garden.

Neighbours have a responsiblity to neighbours. They have to at least TRY to be good neighbours. When they don't even try, it's time to build a fence.

Bullies are not acceptable to me and that cat and it's owner were bullies.

Yes, I did let Bear eat the cat. But I am sure the cat didn't suffer very long. It was small, four pounds max. Bear was four months old, gentle as a kitten and about ninety pounds. Was it cruel to let Bear eat the cat? Yup. I coulda shot it, I suppose. But I woulda gave it to Bear.

Solvent naphtha (petroleum)
Diphenyl Trimethylbenzene

IMO, the main ingregient of concern would be Naphthalene. I am not sure how drying and time reduces it's impact, or availability via air or contact.

BUT ... what REALLY gets me is the Sunday afternoon bible thumpers. I'm surrounded by 5 (count 'em ... FIVE) CHURCHES. Each church is filled with people who feel that their sole (there's a pun there folks) obligation is to save my soul from things that THEY view as a threat.

Healthy Alternatives to Moth Balls

By Annie B. Bond

It was sobering to see that naphthalene, the main ingredient in conventional moth balls was recently listed as a registered carcinogen by the U.S. government. How many homes have that memorable smell impregnating their sweater chests and closets? Natural moth repellents are the only safe choice, and their fragrances are effective. If you have mothballs in your house, put them in the trash, and air anything that holds their smell in the sun as often as possible.

Here is how to make an easy and effective moth repellent sachet:

This recipe will fill about a dozen sachets. You can buy herbs in bulk at almost any health food store:

2 ounces each dried rosemary and mint
1 ounce each dried thyme and American ginseng
8 ounces whole cloves

Mix herbs and place some in the center of a bandanna or handkerchief (or in a muslin tea-bag, available at health food stores). Tie with a ribbon.

////I have several prominant signs that say: "NO SOLICITORS ... NO BIBLE THUMPERS ... NO CHRISTIANS ALLOWED ... etc. But sure enough, every Sunday afternoon ... here they come.////

What you do is arm yourself with knowledge. Learn about the sham that is Christianity. For instance, tell them you'll join them if they can come up with one reference to Jesus Christ during his life. This incredible man born of a virgin who supposed turned Jewish society and the Roman occupation on its head should been someone the Roman writers might have found worth mentioning.

Or tell them you'll join if they can give you a chronological account of what happened on the first Easter--the conditions are that all four gospels must be used and no information can be omitted or modified from any of them. If these are reliable eyewitness testimonies, it should be a snap.

Or ask them if the gospels are eyewitness accounts then who witnessed the incident in the Garden of Gethsemane?

Or why did Jesus tell his audiences that the 2nd Coming would happen in their lifetimes when it didn't?

Or how did Jesus and Pilate engage in a complex conversation concerning the nature of truth when Jesus did not speak Greek or Latin and Pilate did not speak Aramaic?

If the gospel writers came from Palestine, how is it that they do not know the layout of its cities and towns and filled their accounts with the names of fictitious towns?

Why does Paul--supposedly a contemporary of Jesus--not ever tell us anything about Jesus Christ as a creature of history and, in fact, never tells us where Jesus walked or when?

When Paul was persecuting Christians, who else was involved with him, how long did the persecution last and why did it suddenly stop upon his conversion? Was he a one-man army?

Ask them if they are aware that Bethlehem once stood where Istanbul now stands and that was precisely the reason that Constantine placed the capital of the Eastern Empire there.

Ask them if they really believe it could be possible that a bunch of poor, illiterate commonfolk managed to found a church, produce a body of literature, develop a system of ritual and all with a fisherman appointed as its head?

This is how you combat them--learn their religion better than they know it and badger them relentlessly with questions and demand answers. If they try to equivocate, do not allow it--DEMAND answers to your questions. Tell them every time they come to your house, you will talk of nothing else so don't come by unless they have answers.

They'll stop coming by--trutst me on that one.

Ever consider that your prominent signs may be attracting the oddest folks to join you in your argument, not that there is anything wrong with that (nor it may be the actual goal).
:)

Yes, by putting those signs there, he's encouraging them. They're determined to convert him. They'll break him down with love, dammit! Christian proselytizers are the type of people who believe you don't have anything in your life and so you need Jesus. All you have to do is read their testimonies: "Once I was miserable with no direction in life and then I found God!" They think the most hostile people are that way and so will keep preaching to them until they give in.

What they don't count on is that you reject their religion not because you haven't studied it but because you have. So hit back in that area--they leave it totally unprotected. A few well aimed jabs there and they're gone. But, of course, it means that DO have to study it with a critical eye.

I spent some time in a house in Auckland with neighbours who were also heavy metal fans. They worked at constructing ferrocement yacht hulls. They combined work and business by making an exponential horn out of ferrocement, about 12 feet long and 8 feet across at the bell, and mounted on a trailer at the bottom of their garden pointing at the house. The idea was they could drive it from an amp kept indoors.

Fortunately they blew the driver speaker before I moved in.

The previous occupants of our house had left gouges along the hallway from where they'd driven their motorbikes up a ramp of planks through the front door, through the house and flying off the back porch. So with neighbours like us I guess the heavy metal yacht builders could easily get the idea that anything went.

I hate Rhubarb. YUK. Just a springtime thought.
Nothing to do with my neighbours.
But, all my neighbours grow it, have really healthy looking plants. They offer me some each and every year (that I decline, because I hate Rhubarb).

I would like to pull out all the Rhubarb in the world and distroy it forever! But, I am not a violent man.

I once noticed a man who put a sign up on his entry step, that was near a bus stop, on a route that I took. It said "don't sit on the step". The sign kept coming down, and he kept putting it up. One day someone put a h in the lettering, it now said "don't shit on the step". The sign came down and was never erected again

On a personal note, I had no thought or desire to sit on his step, until I saw the sign. I admit, once I saw it, there was a compelling force that made me want to sit on it, if just for a few seconds. But, I never got the nerve up to do it, before it came down.

You can reduce the frequency of Biblethumpers by telling them that you are of The Other People - it hurts their heads, as The Other People can not HAVE Original Sin ...

It is good to remember, IMO, that at least one Mudcatter, a best beloved Mudcatter, has a life-long partner who is sincere in their Jehovah Witness beliefs. Imagine how it must feel to read of your loved one's group being trashed so often on a site you consider to be full of friends. I thought the thread was about neighbours which, except apparently in Deckman's case, are not necessarily "bible thumper."

One more thing and then I am done. Gnu, a warning at the beginning of your posts about the dog and cat would have been greatly appreciated. It's difficult to get those horrible images out of my mind, I don't know about anyone else. Of course, I lost a cat to a gd dog whose owner let it run loose in Mystic, CT. It ran into my yard, and by what witnesses said, just grabbed her in his mouth and ran. We looked for weeks as someone said they'd seen her body on a road, but we never were able to find her, nor prove anything against the owner. The dog was a known "problem" which the authorities did little about. I can assure you, though, had I had a chance to catch someone and/or their dog doing such, they would be fortunate to still be alive.

One other observation: sometimes "letting nature take its course" would mean several of us would be dead, already, as well as children not vaccinated, etc. It's a pretty broad statement to use as a defence, imo.

With respect,

kat

Jehovah Witnesses at my door, OR in real life, have never ever been anything but polite to me. I`ve entered a few burning structures with a fellow who held to that belief. Never crossed my mind that he was religious--although I suppose we all get a bit religious at times like that. There are some folks who have no class, and dissing people because they have a different `belief` system is more a display of ignorance on the part of the disser than it is a reflection on the dissee. IMO.

I agree with Kat about the JWs. We have a few locally. They're polite, friendly and don't harangue.

Mormons, on the other hand, are a bunch of threatening bullies who dress like the Mafia and behave to match. Politeness is completely wasted on them.

I'll get rid of my wind chimes when the neighbor gets rid of her 4 barking dogs, stops turning off the "invisible fence" at night so they can come piss on my shrubs and crap in my driveway, keeps her garbage where the damned dogs can't get in it so that the wind blows it into my yard, (not to mention the tacky silk flowers she puts out and lets rot until they also blow all over my yard, and keeps her 5 cats inside so they stop killing the birds at my feeders, and using my raised beds as a litter box.

There, glad I got that off my chest.

Somebody needs a fence (possibly electric and possibly topped with razor wire) and a lawn sprinkler system activated by a motion detector.

Hmmmm... apparently, I struck a cordite with this thread.

I am sticking to my bottom line. If my neighbours don't show me common courtesy and respect my rights, I believe they are rude.

As for me allowing the neighbour's cat to bully and torture Bear day after day at length after I tried to get the neighbour to do SOMETHING about it, I don't think that is acceptable. A four month old dog choking itself out of breath on it's tether is just not acceptable.

Oh yeah... the neighbour with the windchimes also has a flag next to his front door. It's about 7m from my bedroom window and it flaps in the wind which is quite enough noise to be disturbing during the night but also often smacks the soffit return making even more noise. I have NO idea what the design on the flag is supposed to represent... perhaps "rudeness"?

Re the JWs, I used to be polite. I asked them to stop. They didn't. Every time they came to my door, I told them not to ring Mum's door. They did.... seconds later. That is rude.

I am as nice as pie if you don't throw pie in my face.

My neighbor on the other side from the mad woman, was a JW. A lovely guy, a pretty good friend, we would look after each other's place when the other was away. He even wrote a letter in support of me about all the problems she was causing in the neighborhood with many people. Sadly, he got cancer, and refused chemo, for he had seen what his wife went thru when she did chemo. She tried to persuade him by telling him that the treatment had improved since she did it, but he had made up his mind. I was never bothered by JWs while they were there.

I previously dealt with them at other premises by telling them that I had my own religion, that if they wanted to say a quick prayer, I would do that with them, but that I really did not want them back. They never came back to those premises while I stayed there.
