Here's the blurb for tonight's show: Henry Louis Gates Jr. explores Latin America's African roots in visits to six countries, beginning with Haiti and the Dominican Republic. He explains how Haiti's liberation from the French Empire became a double-edged sword. In the Dominican Republic, he examines how race has been socially constructed in a society where people have inter-married for centuries; and details the nation's troubled history with Haiti. |

Both shows started out with music of the slave/black cultures. Well worth watching, imo. I found this blurb about it HERE. "Cuba: The Next Revolution" In Cuba, Gates finds out how the culture, religion, politics and music of this island are inextricably linked to the huge amount of slave labor imported to produce its enormously profitable 19th century sugar industry, and how race and racism have fared since Fidel Castro's Communist revolution in 1959. |

These people are descended from African slaves who were shipwrecked on a Caribbean Island and who inter-mixed with the local Caribe Indians. They were deported to Central America in Honduras, Belize, Guatemala and Nicaragua. (Search for "Garifuna.") It doesn't sound as though they will be included, this time, but judging from what Gates has done in the past, I'd be surprised if he doesn't make another series.
