BS: Superman to renounce US citizenship!

"I'm tired of having my actions construed as instruments of US policy," The Man of Steel said in a short story in the issue, Action Comics No. 900 from the Time Warner Inc unit DC Comics, which hit newsstands this week.

Now I understand where why some Yanks think that Obama is an Alien...

Shuster, the artist who helped create the character with writer Jerry Siegel, was born in Canada.

Conservative commentators were unhappy with the new storyline, given that the fictional superhero has long proclaimed he stood for "Truth, Justice and the American way."

Critics have described Superman's life story as a metaphor for the immigrant experience, because he is an alien.

Superman has never been documented as taking out US citizenship.

Superman cannot run for US President!

I sympathize with Superman on this one.

I thought Superman was already an extremely illegal alien.

I think he was granted honorary USA citizenship fairly early in his career. The USA, after all, would want the most powerful superhero in the world (the Universe?) to be an American citizen, wouldn't they? And what could be more American than Superman? Well, okay, Captain America, I guess...but that's about all. Even Superman's uniform looks pretty American to me.

I gather he was granted citizenship of every country in the world back in 1974.

But then that wouldn't apply to him as Clark Kent would it?

Yawn. Obviously he's under the influence of red kryptonite or something. Or he's an evil clone Superman. etc., etc., etc.

Fifteen years ago they killed him off. The end. No more Superman. But wait! He got resurrected!! How do they think of these things???

If Superman can come back from the dead, he can get his citizenship back. No biggie. He's Superman. Just keep buying the comic books and you'll see.

(Did I say "comic books"? My bad. I meant "pricey graphic novels.")

No way Superman would want to be president. No matter which party he would be a member of, no matter what he did, everything he did would be picked apart by vultures and commentators.

Besides, imagine him being in the middle of a budget committee meeting or a cabinet meeting and having to break off to go save a the world from a sudden emergency, then returning to the meeting with his hair unmussed.

Superman would never be elected into any office in any democratic country. If you stand for Truth and Justice, you have no chance against opponents who use subtle inaccuracies and prejudices. If your X-ray vision allows you a correct diagnosis, you will be disbelieved like Cassandra.

Rightly so. Don't expect politicians to be better than their society. Only if a whole society improves in terms of information and social training, they will be able to elect better candidates, and control them. Schools and the internet etc. are our Krypton.

I remember the original story, as illustrated in the actual comic book.

Farm wife Mom Kent, of Smallville USA, was looking over the place when she came upon a rocketship with a baby in it. She took him home and let everybody in Smallville think he was hers. No doubt home births were common then, and she and Dad Kent would have had no trouble getting a birth certificate.

What happens in Smallville stays in Smallville.

"With an outfit like that, he is either Canadian or gay"

Really? ;-) I don't know about "gay"...but when I think of a "Canadian" superhero outfit, about all that comes to my mind is an all-over furry brown beaver hair body suit, complete with beaver buck teeth, and wearing a toque, of course. Maybe moose antlers too. Certainly not anything resembling Superman's duds.

This Canadian superhero would throw snowballs, gain immense powers (like opening stubborn pickle jars) by drinking maple syrup, and would often end his sentences with the tentative expression, "eh?". He would make great efforts not to offend anyone, and would always seek compromise if at all possible. He would oppose capital punishment and make sure that everyone in society had equal access to a single-payer medical plan funded through the public purse.

Subject: RE: BS: Superman to renounce US citizenship!
From: Little Hawk

Oh, the beaver suit would have a big flat beaver tail too, of course, and it would be used to slap the water as a danger/distress/alert signal. I hope everyone understands that I'm talking about the animal when I say "beaver", not making double entendres about human female anatomy.

Little Hawk-

What are you implying by saying "I hope everyone understands that I'm talking about the animal when I say "beaver", not making double entendres about human female anatomy."?

Are you assuming that some of us are thick-skulled or cultural Neanderthals or sexists, or all of the above?

I'm insulted and so is my beaver!

I was implying that where there is ANY opportunity, Charley, to misconstrue the real intentions of a poster someone here will jump on it like a dog on an unguarded roast chicken and exploit the shit out of it. ;-) Therefore, I was taking pre-emptive action to prevent such opportunistic acts from occurring.

"thick-skulled"? Yeah. Probably.

"cultural Neanderthals"? You betcha! ;-)

"or sexists" (Possibly, but that's not a label I'm inclined to toss around much. It gets way overused around here already.)

I'm hoping to someday read the comic-book (err..graphic novel) where Superman is depicted as black and gay. Now that would certainly breathe some new life into an ancient superhero.

That would have to be an entire new super character, wouldn't it? But why stop at just Black and gay? How about a superhero who is half Black, half Native American, hermaphroditic, gay, Jewish, and handicapped (must use a rocket-powered wheelchair & seeing-eye dog), and a childhood victim of sexual abuse in a Jesuit orphanage?

That sounds good too, LH. Might take more than one graphic novel to cover all those bases. But hey, they don't call him Superman for nuthin'.

There's no drama in torturing him to death without gloating. Kryptonite bullets would kill him quickly.

Smallville is an unnamed town somewhere in the middle of America. People there are probably Protestant so there is not likely to be Jesuit school.

"Smallville is an unnamed town somewhere in the middle of America. People there are probably Protestant..."

1. Smallville could be anywhere in the U.S.   Upstate New York, western South Carolina, eastern Oregon...

I go for upstate New York, myself. Closer to Gotham. A lot of young people from Smallville win scholarships, become engineers or mild-mannered reporters, and move to Gotham.

2. Probably Protestant? Somebody doesn't know much about the middle of the country. They might have been Protestant, but there are no grounds for saying "probably." Most likely Mom and Dad Kent didn't belong to a church at all.

Superhero costumes were based on the garb of circus strongmen. Some of them, at least, wore leggings and a top with a pair of shorts on top.

Real men don't wear tights. They wear longies, and only when it's really cold.

As a geographer I've studied the landscape in and around "Smallville" for years and its clearly in the heart of the Midwest.

I wonder what Lex Luthor has to say about Superman renouncing his US citizenship? Maybe he'll take a moment to reflect on that from his current run for the US Presidency and release a statement.

Cheerily,

If you look at the lobby of the Daily Planet, you will see unmistakable similarities to the lobby of the Daily News building on 42nd Street, in Manhatten. This building also portrayed the Daily Planet building in the scene where Superman rescues Lois on her way to the ground. Clearly Metropolis is based on New York, just as Gotham City is reportedly based on Chicago.

I'm beginning to think that I do recall Smallville being in Kansas. But the memory is very, very faint.

But wait a minute! Maybe it was BATMAN that comes from Gotham. I could be in deep doodoo here.

According to Google Earth, you cretins, here is the location of Metropolis:

"Metropolis, Illinois, located at Exit 37 on Interstate 24 at the southernmost tip of Illinois, has so much to offer to so many! Metropolis is the official Home of Superman and proudly honors its favorite son with a 15-foot bronze statue of America’s Super Hero right in the middle of Superman Square. And now, a new statue of actress Noel Neil, posed as Lois Lane, stands just two blocks down the street."

So there!

Even though a swan is adopted by a duck, he is still a swan. Metropolis, Illinois, lacks the characteristics of the home of the Daily Planet. I suspect that its rush hours only occur on the way to the tavern in the evening.
