I'll always remember him as the composer of my personal favourite song 'Where, Oh Where, is our James Connolly?'. 11 May 11 - 08:31 AM (#3152028) Subject: RE: Obit:Irish playwright/poet Patrick Galvin-May 2011 From: GUEST,John Moulden Patrick Galvin's were among the first recordings of Irish traditional song that I heard, when I was about 18. They included 'The Fair of Turloughmore' and 'Dunlavin Green'. His book, Irish songs of Resistance, which was published, first I think by WMA, and later by Oak in America, was, although the historical commentary lacked nuance and sometimes accuracy, was one of the first books I came across that made any attempt to put songs in any sort of context. Traditional song is in his debt. |

He was a clear influence on the Clancy's, whose "Irish Songs of Rebellion" clearly echoed Galvin's earlier record--same title, almost identical content, very similar artwork. |
