Schwarzenegger Divorce

Just heard the sad news that Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver are to divorce. Apparently she's going to try and take him for everything. He, on the other hand, just wants her clothes, her boots and her motorcycle.

I always think of the description of Arnie that someone (possibly Clive James) He was described as looking like a condom stuffed with walnuts.
It works for me.

The [extended] Kennedy clan have had very bad luck with their relationships in this generation.

Maybe its because of the people they form them with.

I heard it had something to do with Maria and her stalking of our Kendall. I told her the Captain is taken, Jacqui is a beautiful gal and she is his only one. Nope Maria wants the Captain and left old Arnold cause of it ... I think it is the Captain's leather jacket that does this to the women folks ... You sly devil you ...

I know that this is the BS section after all - and we discuss Shatner and Chongo here. But is a celebrity divorce really worth discussing? Who cares?

I suppose it would be significant if Arnie or Maria was thinking of running for President, but I don't think either is....? (And in any case, we know that Arnie, unlike Barack, wasn't born in the US.)

Maria could run. Why would divorcing the Hun be a detriment?

I never could understand what she saw in him. I think the separation had something to do with her dad passing btw, but I 'm not sure what.

Regardless of politics and personal feelings about the couple, I think it's a shame whenever ANY 25 year marriage comes to an end.

This may be an unpopular position; but I can't really separate the person from the behavior. Good riddance to A.S. I dont' like the politics or the person.

btw I 'm not talking about being repelled by someone for (relatively average) things like cheating on their taxes or their spouse- but , for instance,   I could never watch a Woody Allen movie after the truth about his seedy relationship with his stepdaughter came to light. Never need to see a Mel Gibson movie again after his nauseating anti semitic remarks; or bother to tune into the horrible hair (aka also know as the Donald) after his racist tinged birthing taunts. Not that I ever watched that blowhard before. lol

But I haven't liked A.S. since I saw him YEARS ago on Pumping Iron, a documentary about weightlifters; and he proudly revealed himself to be a manipulative, greedy, ruthlessly underhanded competitor. I have little doubt about what HE saw in her either. But I think she's better off without him.

Well, I think Arnold was a lot better governor than I expected him to be. Most of the time, he tried to use common sense and to rise above political ideology and get the job done. He found out the job wasn't as easy as he expected, but I think he put in a very good effort.
I'm not sure anybody can fix California. This state has the most screwed-up government anyone could imagine.

I'm sure it's not easy for celebrities to remain married, since so many things draw them into separate lives. So, I'm sorry they're parting.

Should we do the same?

Actually, I think it is very sad when any realtionship ends. Leave em in peace and hope they manage to sort things out.

I hadn't heard they were divorcing, only that they had separated. Is there later information?

Joe Offer, agree with you. A.S. did try to get his promises implemented. First the legislature refused to pass his agenda, and then the electorate, when those proposals...the ones he was elected to implement...went on the ballot, turned them down. Apparently he was not the great communicator.

I do fault him, however, for giving up on his vision. Perhaps he could have eventually got some portion of his agenda enacted.

JtS...ya never heard of toupie ham? I don't buy smoked picnic shoulder or butt or shank any more. I buy toupie at twice the price (on sale) and there's little fat an no bone and it still makes a pea soup or boiled dinner or whatever that is fine.

News came out this morning that 10 years ago he fathered a child by a woman who worked on the Governor's staff, or in some such similar position. And a few days ago I heard speculation that Maria was waiting until after her father's death, being a good Catholic girl and all.

What is relevant to the public in this case, I think, is the (reported) fact that Arnold withheld the news about his having fathered a household staffer's child for over 10 years, not even letting his wife know, and apparently kept it quiet, even while paying child support to the mother, until his two gubernatorial campaigns and terms were over.

Back when Arnold was considering running for CA governor, and during the campaign, there were "stories" of Arnold's being a skirt-chaser & having made unwelcome sexual advances to a number of women -- the kinds of behavior that got OR Sen. Bob Packwood such a backlash that he had to resign & the kinds of things the Republicans kept accusing Bill Clinton of, trying to bring him down politically -- but Maria publicly vouched for her husband, saying she knew them better than anyone else and he would never do such things.

Now it looks like Maria, at least, was badly used for political gain. And while Arnold himself never played the "holier than thou" card against his political opponents, he kept quiet while his party's mouthpieces (e.g., Limbaugh, Beck, & many Repub. politicians) skewered people like John Edwards & Bill Clinton for sexual infidelity.    I think the California voters were cheated on too, not just Maria.

Apologies for my mistake the screen I am looking at is slightly blurry and it was early!!

It does remind me of one of the threads on here regarding condom wearing or lack of it. It seems that the rich, famous or powerful are not infallible, we in the UK have had the odd one or two news item about the personal lives of some disgraced stars or prominent figures, similar stories. It makes you wonder what the young make of it all especially when it happens to be someone that has always been in the public eye and highly regarded.

The webpage news indicates that the media are moving in, en masse, on the mother and child. To me, that is totally outside the realm of human decency, and another example of contemporary media at it's worst.

I think she has seen the writing on the wall for some time. The saddest part is thinking of those two young boys, who I think will be affected the most, due to their age, which is identical. It is not that they are half-brothers, but twins essentially..and the family, aunts or uncles, has to find a way to get therapy for the other children, but especially them, and if they have not already met, meeting under safe and controlled circumstances eventually. And Arnold, if he has not already, needs to add the boy as a son and acknowledge him. It will be awful for Maria and the children, but I think it has to be done, with professional guidance. mg
