Robert Huth might have had one of the shortest FA Cup Final appearances ever had the referee spotted his disgusting off the ball foul on Balotelli after a quarter of an hour. However, it made a change to watch Balotelli complete ninety minutes without even a booking for once and as a Man City fan, of course, I think we just about edged it! I can imagine that the bars in Manchester will do pretty good business tonight. |

Foreign players, an Italian and a Scot for managers, foreign owned and too dear to watch these days. Toure is on £220,000 a week, yes a WEEK!! crazy. The FA Cup final has been devalued by having premiership games on the same day. Cup final day used to be the end of the season; now the most important day is next Sunday. Football is all about screwing the last penny out of the punters pocket. It's FC Utd or Altrincham for me. |

They both won their respective leagues today. They say it comes in three's and it did today. Looks like Aston Villa have helped Man City to get that third place now. |

I wondered why Milner - a tough and industrious player admittedly - got so many games while Adam Johnson was sat on the bench and Sean Wright-Phillips was not always in the squad. They are both faster, shoot better and are more skillful. Still, Milner can and does work hard anywhere he is told to. Maybe he is seen as the hod carrier, but he certainly does not seem to have the vision or explosiveness of his other midfield colleagues Silva and Ya Ya Touré. Barry may well get another season, although Nigel de Jong is the more important midfield ball winner. Some of Barry's long balls are better, but with his age in mind, Mancini may well look out for a younger player with an eye to the future. It is obvious that several players will go at the end of the season, but I think the former Aston Villa players should be there for at least another season. Barry at least has an FA Cup medal for his sideboard now. |

I got back from Wales in time to go to Blackburn. Though the result suited us it wasn't the best of games but I guess at this time of the Season the ends justify the means. Whatever people say about Rooney you can't argue about that he is a great player and has more than one depth to his game. Some of his passing and movement in the past few games has been sublime and his goalscoring touch is returning. The penalty on Saturday was huge in the sense that he knew that scoring it would almost certainly win the leugue for a record 19th time. There was a lot of messing about and waiting to take the kick but it was a fine penalty kick. After that Blackburn conceded the play to protect their point that that deserved. But I think it could have been a shortsighted decision. It is so close at the relegation end that they could regret not trying to score again against a clearly off-form United. Now for the big one against Barcelona. barcelone must be strong favourites but this team this year have won several matches purely on spirit and belief......and Fergie !!! So don't write them off yet. Well done to City .....there is clearly more to come from them !! Finally - Arthur, I watched the highlights of Villa v Arsenal. They were bloddy good when Turnip head was manager. What amazes me is the sad demise of Brian Little. Brian as manager of Villa in 1995–96 he had a the most successful season at Villa Park in years. The club finished fourth in the Premiership, reached the FA Cup semi-finals and won the Coca-Cola Cup with a 3–0 win over Leeds at Wembley. Trinidad and Tobago striker Dwight Yorke had now firmly established himself as a world-class goalscorer. Villa qualified for the 1996–97 UEFA Cup and although they were knocked out at the first stage by Swedish part-timers Helsingborg, they qualified for the 1997–98 competition after finishing fifth in the Premiership. He is now manager of Gainsborough Trinty in Lincolnshire. Hard to imagine. Anyway, there is only one club for me Villa :-) |

As for me, it may be fitting to recall that Manchester United played Blackpool in the Cup Final in 1948. United won 4-2. We went as a family, my grandfather, father and myself. Obviously as a 10 year old I was excited and thrilled. Do you know; though I sometimes forget my Pin Number I can still recite the team. Crompton,Carey,Aston,Anderson,Chilton,Cockburn,Delaney,Morris,Rowley ,Pearson,Mitten. No foreign players in this team !! Though I suppose in those days we would consider Carey and Delaney as "outsiders". My father's name was jack so my favourite was Jack Rowley who scored two goals in this game. Stan Pearson & John Anderson scored the others. It will be an entirely different experience for me going to watch United v Blackpool on Saturday. I have no doubts that Blackpool will go for it. A wonderful controller of a football and a brilliant thinker. As I was living in Hull for some time I saw him play often. But my outstanding recollection of him was when he came to Old Trafford and totally ran the game for Hull. He was here there and every where. He took all the corners,throw-ins and even some of the goal kicks. He was also a good manager with Hull where he "discovered" Don Revie and Leeds United. An outstanding player, Manager and person. Esp Dennis, who held many Wisden records in his time. I saw them play both games too, of course, to add to above list. They were also from my part of London ~~ born in Hendon, went to Bell Lane school, the primary school just round the corner from Hendon County, my secondary school, whose 1st XI goalkeeper I was during 2 seasons, 49-50. Dennis Compton's main Middx & England batting partner, Bill Edrich [according to wiki their partnership total has still never been surpassed] also played soccer for Spurs & Norwich City. He took one of the best deep catches on the boundary that I ever saw, against the Australians at Lords in, I think, 1946. ~Michael~ |

He did not bowl as much for England but his batting was enough to win many a game. With Bill (WJ) Edrich the became known as the Middlesex twins. Denis became more famous than his brother and featured in the Brilcream advertisements among others. Leslie Compton was a "stopper" Centre Half in a great Arsenal side. Though I don't think he ever played cricket for England. Being from ooop North I remember another double international at football and cricket in Willie Watson. He played for several clubs - principally Sunderland - and England. At cricket he was a classy left-handed batsman and played most of his career with Yorkshire ( where he was born -as did any player chosen for Yorkshire in those days) and Leicestershire. Willie was also a very fine fielder when this activity was not one in which many cricketers of that era excelled. Another double international I remember was Arthur Milton of Gloucestershire. Another lefthander who played for Arsenal among others. Arthur - I know Jim Cumbes - he is now Chairman of Lancashire Cricket Club. Walden was born in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire and after playing football for various clubs in his home town, he started his professional career in 1909 at Northampton Town, then playing in the Southern League. Being only 5 ft 2 in tall he was often described as a 'diminutive winger' and known for his 'darting jinking runs down the right flank'. His small stature also accounted for his nickname 'Fanny' which was in common use during his time to describe those of 'dainty physique'.···· I record this here because this thread reminds me that I once saw this distinguished man in the flesh after his retirement. In about 1942 when I was 10 and he would have been 52, he would come to coach senior cricket teams at Northampton Town & County School which I attended 1941-43 while evacuated to Northampton during the War. This little man walked past a group of us juniors waiting to bat, and said a polite 'Good afternoon' to our form master, one Mr Baskcomb; who then, when he had gone out of earshot, told us who he was & his distinguished sporting history as rubricated above; & we all gazed awestruck after him & watched as he coached our 1st XI on the main pitch... Whilst talking about double Internationals I hope I won't be too far from the thread title if I mention Mike Smith. Mike (MJK) Smith was an England test Captain at Cricket and also played for England at Rugby Union. I saw Mike several times at both sports and I believe that he was at that time the only player to wear spectacles at rugby and one of very few at cricket. Now of course at cricket many wear "shades". This "disability" at cricket certainly handicapped him against the faster bowlers and though a prolific scorer in County Cricket for Warwickshire his England performances were to say the least disappointing. Indeed at the time many said that had he not been the captain he would have had difficulty in making the team. Another player worth a mention for his ability to play multiple sports well at the highest standard is Brian Close. Brian was a controversial person and ruffled some feathers as a hard unmovable player. A great all-rounder at cricket he represented England many times and was selected as caption for a short period where England when undefeated under his leadership. Close was also a youth international at football but cut short his football career to concentrate on cricket. If you add to these the fact that he was a scratch golfer playing left-handed and low single figures right, you will see t hat Brian was a talented sportsman. There was a intermittent "beep, beep, beep" noise in the background which I could not place at first. It was Manchester United's open-top bus reversing into the garage. |

I know Manchester well- I was born in the former palace of the Bishop of Manchester (Bishop's Court, converted to flats after the War). And can exchange chapter and verse about Irlam's o'th' Height with that Gnomic person. Worked in Hulme when the flats were dangerous territory, knew Wythenshawe when it was aspirational and the docks when they had ships, was scared of the lads from Collyhurst. Preferred the blue Ashton trolleybuses to red Manchester ones. Played in the Exile when Des Donelly played at the Bull. Saw the fishermen's wives waiting for them to come home in the evenings on Trafford Road (my aunt's explanation). And couldn't give a toss about United or City. Didn't I come from Lancashire? It's great to come from Lancashire, Where women all wear clogs and shawls And men are really men- It's great to come from Lancashire, I'm proud to come from Lancashire, And once you've come from Lancashire You'll never go there again! |

Or a liking for an all boys education run by catholic monks? ;-) I have only lived in Irlams o' th' Height 9 years - The previous 50 were in Swinton. The Dog and Partridge, which was our second nearest pub by about 10 yards, has now been closed becuase of the second or third shooting. The remaining 3 locals are now all Holts houses, which if anyone shot into no-one would notice. In fact, one regular was hit smack in the middle of the forehead by a 9mm bullet. Missed his brain by about 20cm... Still rather live here than S**g sheep in Derbyshire though... :D (tG) (Says he who will probably be moving to the Yorkshure Dales as soon as the house is sold!) |
