There are four of these identical threads. I posted these in one of the others before any of them had any other posts. Maybe Joe or Max can take care of the others. Sorry, you'll have to figure the breaks out. I typed them in the other one.

Here ya go:

VINCENT (Starry, Starry Night)
Don McLean
As recorded by Don McLean on "American Pie" (1971)

1. Starry, starry night
Paint your palette blue and gray
Look out on a summer's day
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul
Shadows on the hills
Sketch the trees and the daffodils
Catch the breeze and the winter chills
In colors on the snowy linen land

CHORUS: Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen; they did not how
Perhaps they'll listen now

2. Starry, starry night
Flaming flowers that brightly blaze
Swirling clouds in violet haze
Reflect in Vincent's eyes of china blue
Colors changing hue
Morning fields of amber grain
Weathered faces lined in pain
Are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand. CHORUS

BRIDGE: For they could not love you
But still your love was true
And when no hope was left inside
On that starry, starry night
You took your life as lovers often do
But I could have told you, Vincent:
This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you

3. Starry, starry night
Portraits hung in empty halls
Frameless heads on nameless walls
With eyes that watch the world and can't forget
Like the strangers that you've met
The ragged men in ragged clothes
The silver thorn of bloody rose
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow,

LAST CHORUS: Now I think I know
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen; they're not listening still
Perhaps they never will

[Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) Dutch Painter]

What kind of IDJET are you???????

The poor chap is looking for a SONG not some treatis on absinthian induced dementia.

If you choose to promote "Coopernic" (truly an excellent program) at least test out your links before you post them.

Let me get this straight....

You have the man's answer....
Or at least PART of it (laughcat)

But you are too BUSY, (chatting/catting/disorganizing ...perhaps) to dig out the answer yourself....(the answer you KNOW you posted) so you leave the "work" to Joe or Max....

Come on....do YOUR part....help the poor overworked souls out....contribute something more to the community.

Ah,.,....the song my grandmother sang:
I won't be lazy
I won't be lazy
I won't be lazy
I won't ..... I won't ......I won't.....

The song is called "Vincent". Go to Don Mcleans official web page: http://www.ozemail.aust.com/~mclean/page7.html and at the bottom of the page is a link to Don Mclean lyrics page.

Good luck.

Amazing what kind of things you can find here at Mudcat when you've been away for a few days. One of our number is called an "IDJET" for trying to help out, and another (who of all people here, should know we don't reply to this man) says "be nice!!" I could add that the chords and timing are totally incorrect, but it hardly seems to matter.

Me thinks the "Person" be the Idget, and perhaps should be pitied rather than scorned. He/she must be very unhappy.

Do the chords here work any better? I'm not a chord person, but I figure if I can type "don mclean vincent" into Alta Vista and get a page with the chords on the first hit, I might as well try to help.

Yeah, without embellishment, those will do just fine...add whatever touches you feel compelled to do....

Normally I'd not respond on a thread like this, but I was just struck by the remarkable resemblance between Garg's behavior and that of my brother, whom I love dearly, but whom I don't try to talk to when he's on a bender or off his meds.

most sincerely,

Mag, it can also happen when you're "brewin' your own".

Although I've never really fallen prey to the charm inherent in "Vincent", (I like the paintings though) it makes a great vehicle for parody. I've heard two over the years that I thought were screamingly funny. Don't know if I'll be able to find 'em, but I'll try.

From: Haruo

This is the Esperanto version by Roel Haveman:

Vincent (Stela, stela nokt')

Stela, stela nokt'
Paletron pentru griz', lazur'
Tag' somera en aŭgur'
Vidante la malhelon en la viv'.
Ombroj sur dekliv',
Arbo skize kun florĉarm',
Farbo brize kun malvarm'
Kolore sur la neĝa tola ter'.

Nun klaras la afer'
Pri via pena komunik'
Kiom serĉis vi por sana psik'
Por ilia liberig'.
Surdadis ili pro la menskaten',
Nun eble ekkompren'.

Stela, stela nokt'
Flama flor' en vigla vent',
Kirla nubo ĉe Vincent'
Rebrilas en glazura okulpar'.
En koloromar',
Kampoj kun sukcena gren',
Kap' ĉizita pro ĉagren'
Mildiĝas sub la mano de tener',

Refreno:

Dum trafis vin senkor'
Via am' ne iris for.
Kiam formortis la esper'
Dum tiu stela, stela nokt',
Vivprenis vi,
Am' estas tia ĉi
Mi povintus montri, Vincent'
Ĉi mondon sen atent' pri iu bela kiel vi.

Stela, stela nokt'
Hal' senhoma kun pentraĵ',
Mur' sennoma kun vizaĝ',
La mondon rigardanta sen forges'
Kion ili faris jes',
Pri ĉifonul' en ĉifonoz',
Arĝenta dorn' de sanga roz'
Tordita sur la virga neĝteren'.

Nun eble ekkompren'
Pri via pena komunik'
Kiom serĉis vi por sana psik'
Por ilia liberig'.
Surdadis ili, ne aŭskultas jam
Ĝi restos ĉiam sam'.

I learned this during the North American Summer Esperanto Courses (where I was the school newspaper editor and assistant instructor) at the School for International Training in Brattleboro this July. The advanced course involved the study (in Esperanto) of Van Gogh's life and works. Very interesting guy, not just a loon with one ear missing.

Way up at the top, Rick Fielding mentioned two parodies of this song. I know of one, by Martin Pearson, about various paintings he doesn't like that were acquired by a museum at great expense. It is hilarious.
