18 May 11 - 06:10 AM (#3156190) Subject: RE: take an egg and a power drill... From: Jack Campin It might matter to a chick, but not to an ocarina player. You put them wherever it's easiest for your fingers to reach. |
18 May 11 - 07:14 AM (#3156224) Subject: RE: take an egg and a power drill... From: BanjoRay So - is it the size of the holes that sets the pitch? |
18 May 11 - 07:20 AM (#3156226) Subject: RE: take an egg and a power drill... From: Jack Campin Yup. Unless the ocarina has an unusually complicated internal shape, the hole position makes no difference at all - only the wall thickness and hole cross-sectional area. |

18 May 11 - 01:24 PM (#3156399) Subject: RE: take an egg and a power drill... From: GUEST,John MacKenzie What an horrHENdous BATTERY, of CHEEP puns. I should raise the standard, and post a quotation from OMELETTE (Prince of Denmark), by William Shakespeare. Not for nothing is it known among superstitious actors as 'The Scotch Egg play' May I instead, propose, a French toast. BTW Mudguard is into drilling holes in eggs, in a big way. |
19 May 11 - 06:53 PM (#3157235) Subject: RE: take an egg and a power drill... From: MudGuard yes, John, I am - but I never tried to play tunes on my holey Easter eggs (I do not have enough fingers to cover all the holes ...) |
19 May 11 - 11:24 PM (#3157343) Subject: RE: take an egg and a power drill... From: Crowhugger Thanks for the link, Jack; what a great little home made instrument. I'm curious, what are relative diameters of the holes needed to get a major scale, and what is the effect of thicker or thinner walls on the sound? Maybe you can point me to another thread if this has been discussed already. |
20 May 11 - 04:42 AM (#3157424) Subject: RE: take an egg and a power drill... From: Jack Campin The calculations are pretty difficult. Generally you start by tuning the lowest open hole note and keep adding more holes until you reach the point where the tone dissolves in a wheeze (a range of about a tenth). The guy in the video is using one of those conical grinding bits, so he can enlarge the holes progressively. |
