It says Product of USA and they are DEEEEEElicious! Where the heck are they from? I bought them at The Real Atlantic Stupid Store so nobody on staff could tell me where they are from.

You got cherries this early in the season? Where, are they from?

I haven't got any cherries, Gnu, but I think you could also have the first line of a song..?

We got some cherries from Tesco (UK) on Tuesday. The packs are marked "Grown in USA" but give no further details. The cherries themselves are large and juicy but "pleasant enough" rather than "delicious" in flavour.

We have a couple of cherry trees with cherries on them in the garden but it will be a good while before they are ready for picking (and that's if the birds don't have them first - they did last year...).

I have checked out the season harvest times and I can't find USA cherries any earlier than mid June. I didn't ceheck EVERY state in the union... just the "obvious ones". Obviously, the website I use, pickyourown.org is out of date or I am not picking states correctly.

BTW, I find that site to be helpful in timing my purchases. I know when ceratin things will come on sale and I stock up at cheaper prices. Saves a LOT of money over the year.

I don't got cherries. Or blueberries that taste like blueberries.
I'm not even sure I got bananas.

Once on a road trip, I stopped at a road side stand in the NY Fingerlakes region and bought a peach. I was crying for joy when I tasted it- a true, farm grown peach that tasted like.............. a PEACH. I'd forgotten how good a real peach could taste.

I'm glad you got those cherries, gnu, and hope you enjoy every last one because finding real fruit these days is a rare wonder!

Gnu, they're warmer than we are. Depending on elevation, they can get an approximation of winter for plants that require it. I'll have cherries in a month, so they're not impossibly far ahead.

Lefthand, one of our local orchards picks their peaches rock hard. Result? Nasty, astringent fruit just like the ones from mid-winter Chilean imports at their farm stand. You were lucky.

Oh. Calleeforneeahhh is the most suspect then. Gosh these are good! I don't care for $4.99 a pound but I bought Honey Tangerines from Florida today for $1.74 a kg at the same store (obviously someone screwed up on the computer... a bonus of the metric system we use) so I bought 8 of them and it worked out great overall. I GOT TANGERINES TOO!

BTW... if you have never had a Honey (Murcott) Tangerine, treat yourself! DEEEEEElicious!

Goodie I will indulge, cherries are my favourite at this time of year I prefer them to the strawberries we are getting in the UK supermarkets at the moment. Apart from raw or in a pie are there any other recipes alcoholic or non-alcoholic anyone can suggest?

This area of Colorado is famous for its peaches and cherries, but too early for them at the moment. It's also become well known as a great place to grow grapes...lots of vineyards and wineries.

I use dried cherries in trail mix with nuts and other dried fruit. The bing cherries we get here are delicious as are the peaches!

Also, our little first year cherry tree is loaded up with little cherries - getting bigger but still green. We also have lots of birds in our garden, so I think the net will have to come out soon.

We get strawberries from The States, usually Florida, but I can't bring myself to eat them... billions and billions of LARGE seeds on every berry. Our local berries have FAR less seeds and they are much smaller. As I am beyond middle-age I shant tempt fate with THAT many seeds.

Can you say "diverticulitis" while you are doubled over in pain?

I wouldn't expect our Kentish cherries yet, but yesterday, walking through Greenwich, I spotted ripe ones dropped to the pavement from a tree overhanging a garden wall. I might check out the nearby farm. Other thinsg are early.

Non-UK cherries are in the shops, but I stick to ours.

Hello from California's Santa Clara Valley, which used to be "the Valley of Heart's Delight" and the U.s.,s fruit basket before it became Silicon Valley.

According to the largest local grower I can think of, it is indeed cherry season here!

Picked up a watermelon from Texas today. As soon as I tapped it and heard that dull sound I knew it was gonna be GREAT! Thin rind and it is DEEEEliscious. We've had watermelons from Guatamala, Honduras and Mexico for a while but I find them woody tasting and the rinds are very thick... I wait for the ones from USA. The ones from Ontario are not as good but better than the ones from below the US.

Matter of fact, I buy VERY little from outside of NA. The other day, I could NOT find any carrots from Maritime Canada or anywhere in Canada. I was aghast! But, I was SHOCKED to see carrots from Israel. I bought US carrots but they pale in taste compared to those from NS or PEI.

Carrots from Israel??? WTF?

We have a huge cherry tree in our garden (UK) which produces vast amounts of fruit each year. Problem is that there is also close by a huge flock of Starlings which like cherries as much as we do so we seldom get a look in. Still, we have been told that the wild bird population is decreasing so if we are doing our bit with the cherry tree we wont try & stop them.

$2.49... less than half of what I am paying, but, of course, I have to pay the haulage and included in that is the price of cruise missiles. So, I guess my cherries are still delicious even if they are covered in blood.

Sorry about that but another one of my buddies just had a TOO YOUNG relative killed "over there" and it pisses me off. Several local citizens were also killed but they were "insurgents" so they "don't count". Agggghhhhh!@%^((&*#@%

Some nectarines in from California. Fair. Good canteloupe from Guatemala!

California Bing cherries from Mid-May through June, according to California Cherry Advisory Board. In a few stores here, but not all yet.

Funny, in NYC raspberries (if you can find them) are $6-$7 per pund while cherries were fairly reasonable in season - $2.99/lb. Here in Maine, raspberries are plentiful and often on sale while cherries are expensive.
I love cherries. Miss the sour cherries from my Nana's tree and the pies that followed.

Not yet mentioned are the excellent fresh strawberries we have been enjoying for the past two months. California and Mexico are the sources.
Blueberries are common, but poor in flavor. Blackberries only fair, red raspberries unfortunately not often seen.
Mangos variable, both good and so-so, all winter (from Mexico, Peru mostly).
We miss the good papayas we always found in Hawaii and Mexico; always in the stores here, but lack the flavor.

Never short of good apples, B.C. the main source.

Our cherry farm started selling on the first, and I've been buying a couple of pounds every other day. Up till today, the variety was Early Rivers, usually a bit boring.

Today, the Early Rivers were over, and two new varieties were on offer, Merton Glory and Merchant. The Rivers, a black cherry, were much nicer this year than last, juicier and sweeter, and the same applies to the others, which were pretty good last year. The Merton Glories are big, yellow to red in colour, juicy and sweet but with an acid tang as well. The Merchants are black, a little smaller than the others, more aromatic, less juicy, not so sweet or tangy. Both are good, and I just keep eating them.

Anyone in NW Kent, seek them out off the A2 near Ebbsfleet.

On Thursday, the Merton Glories were gone, so 2lbs of Merchants. today, there may have been Merchants earlier (I went in just befoe closing time) but a new variety, which I think is Roundels, also a black sort had appeared.

They have to have so many varieties because of the cross-pollination, and to keep a succession through the season.

From: Penny S.

A variety of cherry. Dark in colour. These particular Roundels had been picked on a day of heavy rain, and went mouldy very quickly.

On Thursday I bought Sunburst. Also £2.50. These are a new variety, about twice the size of other varieties, a red cherry, juicy, sweet, but not much flavour.

Today it was Noir de Guben, obviously a black cherry. Sweet, much better in flavour, and sold at £2 a lb. I don't think I've had this one before. Where there's not many trees of a variety, it's easy to miss them.

Penny
