20 May 11 - 09:12 AM (#3157523) Subject: Lyr Add: DOG (Tom Dundee, via Bryan Bowers) From: saulgoldie I have played this song for a variety of audiences, including English teachers in Brazil. And I have received only delighted responses. I don't ever recall hearing it on any folk music show. None of the folkies who have heard me play it recognized it. For the life of me, I can't understand why it hasn't gotten any legs. The song was written by Tom Dundee, and I heard it on a Bryan Bowers album. There is a downloadable MP3 file out there. I can supply the chords I use, if anyone is interested--pretty simple. Here are the lyrics: DOG Written by Tom Dundee As recorded by Bryan Bowers on "By Heart" The whole thing started 'cause it looked like fun When other people had a dog; "I'm gonna get me one," I said, "Have a little friend around the place." So I went to the pet store down the street And lyin' in the middle of a canine heap Was a sleepy little puppy with a quiet sort of a face. The next few weeks were certainly strange Between the barkin' and the thinkin' up of names Old Blue he wasn't and Spot didn't really apply So I settled for Harry, just because That's how he is and that's how he was And that's how the house gets more and more as days go by. For a time I was careful where I sat The rug got funky and he chewed up my hat And it still happens once in a while when he gets mad But it's been pretty even after all I taught him what I know about playin' ball And he's helped me get rid of a lot of stuff I used to have. Sometimes friends drop by for a couple of beers And we all sit around, take turns rubbin' his ears And callin' him; it's been that way ever since he was a pup. He sleeps on the bed and when I turn over, He turns over, then I turn over, Then he turns over, then I turn over, and we get up. As my life keeps movin' through the different conditions The big changes come with the slightest decisions You're in for a surprise when you think you got it figured, I've found. 'Cause who ever thought I'd ever dote on a pet, But lookin' back now, I always forget How I filled up the time before my dog was around. |

06 Mar 13 - 12:26 PM (#3487106) Subject: RE: Review: 'Dog' by Tom Dundee (Bryan Bowers) From: GUEST,jeff Here's some addtional lyrics and the original words to a couple of different sections: 2nd verse: Well, I handed the man fifteen dollars about and said, "I'll just stick him in my shirt and head on out and reached for the one who looked like a little fox He said, "You hold it right there and fill out these sheets have him back in here for shots in a couple of weeks and it's our policy you take him outta here in this box!" 3d verse: Then he folded up a cardboard crate in a minute took my dog and stuck him down in it pushed on his head and folded in over the top. I can hear him yet how he scratched and he cried and he hollared some more when I got him outside and we were almost home before he decided to stop. Last line of TD's version verse 3: And he taught me when to say NO! and I needed that. Part B of the 4th verse: (TD's original version) When I've fallen asleep and and I want to roll over I always think twice about wakin' up the rover I mean, after all I wouldn't want to wake my dog up! Tag line after last verse: Yeah, the whole thing started 'cause it looked like fun Everybody else had a dog. I wanna get me one I said and have a little friend around the place. The original version on 'A Delicate Balance' the dog is a female. So if one wants to remain true to the original include the changes above and change the gender as well. |
06 Mar 13 - 01:43 PM (#3487145) Subject: RE: Review: 'Dog' by Tom Dundee (Bryan Bowers) From: Phil Cooper I understand that Tom modeled this song on Fred Campeau's dog, Tangle. Who was female. Fred is a longtime fixture in the Chicago scene. |
06 Mar 13 - 02:16 PM (#3487160) Subject: RE: Review: 'Dog' by Tom Dundee (Bryan Bowers) From: GUEST,jeff Could be. Never heard that story and I co-produced 'A Delicate Balance'. Fred was a bartender/songwriter employed at the Barbarossa. He was, no doubt the best of all the unknown songwriters that have come through Chicago. He took up the fiddle, started calling square dances, got married and practically disappeared. I always had a profound respect for Fred and felt his original material was as good as anyone better known. He was/is a very laid-back guy and was never one to pursue the brass ring. He pretty much took things as they came. Btw, I don't mean to imply your statement isn't true. I just never heard it and was really close w/Tom for a few years. |

I just sang this at a jam last Sunday night, paired with Fred Eaglesmith's HE'S A GOOD DOG. |
06 Mar 13 - 11:12 PM (#3487359) Subject: RE: Review: 'Dog' by Tom Dundee (Bryan Bowers) From: Phil Cooper Fred used to sing the song in the old days. He didn't mention the story of it being about his dog, but other, most notably my old singing partner Margaret Nelson did. She was more in tune with the Barbarossa in those days. |
