From: Crane Driver Not exactly about a shipwreck but about the aftermath, I wrote a song called "Elephants' Teeth" which appeared on an album called "Pennbucky to Llangenny" several years ago. It's now available as a free download here and you're welcome to use it (please give credit where it's due). Andrew |

From: Steve Gardham Also on the YG site is 'Three-Score-and-Ten' sung by 'Three Score and Ten', and Stow Brow sung by John Greaves who was born and brought up just above Stow Brow. If you're Googling there are hundreds of interesting shipwreck ballads. Try using 'Wreck of the......' and 'Loss of the .....', and 'Tragic shipwreck/wreck/loss of the.....' We once had a singaround at Whitby in which we competed to see who could sing the most drownings in one ballad. I think it was the 'Royal George' or 'The London' or 'The Northfleet' that won. Also try any Grace Darling songs. She rescued people from the wreck of 'The Forfarshire'. Some of the most gruesome are those accounts where the crew set off in a lifeboat and end up eating each other. |
20 May 11 - 04:54 PM (#3157766) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Shipwreck songs? From: Les from Hull I remember that session, Steve! It was in the Yacht Club, and the Commodore had asked why we sang so many songs about drowning sailors. We just took that as a challenge and started counting them up on the darts blackboard. Then someone came in and said 'Hey Steve, there's a lad here knows 'the Loss of the Royal George', there's 900 of 'em on that!'. We were at the Grace Darling Museum in Bamborough last Sunday. Well worth a visit. When Maggie sings the Grace Darling song, it has become something of a tradition (thank you Brid Widder!) to splash her gently with water at the point where it mentions 'dashing spray'. Of course, this has escalated and people now come at her with stirrup pumps and fire hoses! |

20 May 11 - 10:57 PM (#3157902) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Shipwreck songs? From: Ross Campbell A couple of years ago Fleetwood Folk Club members, under the guise of the "Wyre Light Orchestra", produced a show entitled "Beware the Fylde Coast's Sands: Wrecks and Rescues along the Lancashire Coast", with songs mainly from the pen of Ron Baxter, set to tunes by various members of the band. Several songs therein about notable wrecks along the North West shoreline, from the earliest times to the Riverdance stranded on Cleveleys beach just a couple of years ago. Haven't got time to post now, I can also think of a few of Ron's songs from past Fleetwood/Fishing shows that concern wrecks. I'll be adding those to the Fleetwood and Fishing Permathread in due course. Back soon (off to Langdale in the morning for the Charity Folk Festival). Ross |
