The problem began with Vista and continued with Windows 7 when Microsoft decided in their wisdom that people were recording audio from the Internet instead of buying it - as if any self-respecting Mudcatter would do such a thing! Prior to Vista pretty well any recording programme would record "What you hear" then - zilch! Progs show "Mic" as the only device available! I sought advice on Mudcat and go lots. Some folks assured me that certain programmes would work but when I tried them, sadly, nothing. After sampling lots of Freeware from the very complicated to the very simple, including some which worked for a few weeks then mysteriously ceased functioning after some "Essential Upgrades" from our friends at Microsoft, I'm currently using Sound Tap http://www.nch.com.au/soundtap/index.html Blue clicky doesn't seem to be working! This is a very small and simple programme which does exactly what I'm looking for. I use an elderly version of CoolEdit (now superceded by Audition) for editing. Lets see how long this lasts for. Like a .dll file. I'm still on XP, and I use 'LP Recorder' which seems to record everything you want it to. The free versions of LPR sometimes waver a bit, though. |

But beware that when you try and record something you aren't picking up sound from an in-built mic. In XP and Win 7 you need to use 'Stereo Mix' as the input, this means that you are capturing sound direct from the sound card. In XP 'Stereo Mix' should already be configured. In Vista / Win7 it is not, and you have to configure it first. I forget how I did it, but Google search for 'stereo mix' and you'll find loads of solutions. I'm not quite sure how I got there, and for some reason I can no longer hear sound in VLC - but that perhaps is another problem! |

The Audacity app. is a great one though for recording audio, and you can easily see the waveform and edit it and save it in numerous ways. Also the NCH suite of audio/video apps. is great, but they do tend to nag you to purchase after the free trial runs out!! |

I keep all installation files on hard drive, for ease of reinstallation, but frequently find some have been deleted. It helps to change the names! |

There are also things like Radio Downloader which download straight to mp3 (can be converted to .wav if that's the format you need), and have the additional convenience of allowing you to "subscribe" to a series of a programme (can be extremely useful!) There seems to be no way of enabling Stereo mix, and last night I could not get sound into Adobe Audition, and then it came back for no apparent reason. |

What operating system do you have? In XP Stereo Mix should already be configured. For Win 7 you have to do it yourself. Its not a feature of the sound card per se. Google "Stereo Mix Windows 7" or something like that and there'll be loads of pages about this. |
