I'm trying to find lyrics to a bluesy jazzy type song that has the refrain "Bring back bootleg whisky and wine". Sounds like its from the 1930's era and also makes reference to "bathtub gin" Don't know much more about it I'm afraid! |

22 May 11 - 12:48 PM (#3158722) Subject: RE: bring back bootleg whisky and wine From: greenblues No, but some nice songs there. The style is more bluesy than folky and might be depression era as it's lamenting the bootleg whisky etc. Thanks anyway! |

22 May 11 - 02:35 PM (#3158787) Subject: RE: bring back bootleg whisky and wine From: 12-stringer Are you looking for "What's the Use of Gettin' Sober (When You're Gonna Get Drunk Again)?" This was recorded in the 40s by Louis Jordan, starts off with a conversation between slow-talking Pappy and crack-voiced Sonny and then Pappy does the song itself. Most of the lyrics are as per: What's the use of gettin' sober when you're gonna get drunk again? Old Sam done somethin' fine When he brought back good whiskey, beer, and wine. I love my whiskey and I love my gin Every time you see me I'm in my sin What's the use of gettin' sober when you're gonna get drunk again? swingy recitation begins: I went out last nite 'bout half past one Thought I'd boot it up a little and have some fun I got me a pint about half past two The way I was feeling you know what I wanted to do (&c) Sung: Now what's the use of gettin' sober when you're gonna get drunk again? I keep drinkin' and I keep thinkin' I guess I'm 'bout to lose my mind The main strain is set to a slow swing drag based on the same chords as "Alice's Restaurant." If by some chance this is it, head over to http://www.jazz-on-line.com/pageinterrogation.php and do a search for a free .mp3 download. "Sober" should be enough of a keyword to find it. It's also on one of the 70s Stash LPs -- "Pipe, Spoon, Pot, and Jug" I believe without looking at the jacket; that was where I learned it. |

22 May 11 - 07:35 PM (#3158909) Subject: RE: bring back bootleg whisky and wine From: GUEST,.gargoyle When (Year - Month) did YOU first hear it? Where (Geographic Globe - Florida, California, (this certainly ain't a Brit thread)City, County, or Radio Station) How - spoken or recording (tape, vinyle, friends, live, venue) WHY - What is the connection of This song to YOU important? Mudcat can unravel many "Gordian Knots"... there are perhaps, a dozen GOOD researchers in a family of thousands, with a little personal background ... some might work harder.
Sincerely, |

Had a refrain something like Bring back bootleg whiskey (bootleg liquor?) again That old white lightning and that bathtub gin Stuff like that could make a dead man grin Could make a dead man grin Is that it? I'd love to have the rest of that song. Vrdpkr |

31 May 11 - 02:17 PM (#3163204) Subject: RE: bring back bootleg whisky and wine From: Jim Dixon The National Library of Australia has, in its Oral History and Folklore collection, a recording called "Performances at the Dan O'Connell Hotel [Carlton, Vic.] Folk Club recorded between 18 November 1982 and 2 December 1982 in the Randall Percy collection." One of the songs is BRING BACK BOOTLEG LIQUOR AGAIN performed by Chris Duffy & John Kane. |

04 Aug 20 - 08:05 PM (#4067321) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Bring Back Bootleg Whiskey and Wine? From: cnd It is definitely Stuff Like That by the Hotmud Family (written by Rick Good). You can hear it now on Spotify on a solo(?) album by Rick Good entitled At the Corner of Jekyll & Hyde The lyrics are clear enough that I don't think I really need to transcribe them unless anyone in particular wants me to |
