A beautiful concert from start to finish with a very intimate presentation... They don't appear to get mentioned much in the "folky web sites" but they really should. One the best gigs I've seen for yonks. |

Probably Mike Harding will give em a play. As they toured with Leonard Cohen and have related to Judy collins, dixie chicks and Dolly Parton the mass media is more their aim Dont see where they are 'original' they sound like a lot of others to me as i couldnt make out their lyric I assumed it was more a 'sound' and 'image' that they were projecting. |

Well, that might be debatable. I listened to some of their offerings on their web site, and they are very good. I also looked at the track lists of their rcordings, but of all the songs listed—not a single I would put them into the same general category as Judy Collins in her later career. She started out singing traditional songs, but later on, she abandoned the folk material in favor of recently written songs, some of which were written specifically for her. She is very good—lovely singing voice—but she has taken herself out of the "folk singer" category. Again, I am not denigrating the Webb Sisters. But they would be of only marginal interest to a folk music forum Don Firth |

A title like "Baroque Thoughts" would scare away real folkies (whatever they are in this day-). They have lyrics on their site. Some are their own and I saw one that is Leonard Cohen's. |

I do take your point but much of the music discussed here is only "marginally folk" too. Their live show actually sounds a lot "folkier" than their album too and there's even a traditional tune or two although the songs are contemporary. Anyway, I liked them. :-) |

23 May 11 - 08:36 PM (#3159456) Subject: RE: If only all singers were as good as this From: Don Firth That's fine, Johnny J. This was the first I've heard of them, and I like them, too. I like a lot of musicians and singers, from the Baltimore Consort to the Beatles to operatic bass-baritone George London (who sometimes includes a traditional folk ballad or two in his recitals), but that does not make them folk musicians, nor of any particular interest to the core idea of this forum. That doesn't stop people from discussing music other than folk music and those who perform it. Singers like the late Richard Dyer-Bennet was a classically trained tenor who had also studied classical guitar. The bulk of his repertoire consisted of traditional folk songs and ballads. Yet, he insisted that he was NOT a folk singer. He adhered to the time-honored European minstrel tradition and made no pretense of being a "folk singer." True indeed, much of the music discussed on this forum IS only marginally folk. There is a great deal of hokum spouted on this forum about what is and is not folk music or a folk singer, but let us not get embroiled in another mêlée in THAT tangle of barbed wire! Don Firth |
