BS: Bobert's Move- Last trip and update...

Subject: BS: Bobert's Move to NC... An Update...
From: Bobert

Well, one thing fir sure is that this has become the "SK" (slobber-knocker) I thought it would be on steroids...

I have now completed 8 trips (7 in my 14' box truck and 1 in a 26' rented box truck) and have what looks like as 2 more trips before this "SK" is in the books... However...

... if all goes right my 1953 30' Spartanette and my Kabota will arrive next Wednesday morning on a flat bed trailer being pulled with a Peterbilt road tractor... Everything is tied down and braced and it took two hillbillies the better part of a day to dig it out, get it off it's block foundation put tires back on it and get it ready to head south...

I have also learned that the poor P-Vine, bless her heart, is severely box challenged... With 300 boxes of useless crap she is only good for about 2 boxes a day... According to the Wes Ginny Slide Rule it's gonna take here about 10 years to unpack from this "SK"...

I have also learned that one thing about "short sales" is that you are buying a pig in a poke... We have not had a working stove since arriving and are using a plug-in fry pan and mnicrowave for cooking... The dishwasher is wored out and the refrigerator is wored out so we went to visit Mr. Sears and Mr. Roebuck and this Wednesday we'll have new appliances...

The pool is full of algae and we're shocking it daily and brushing it and cleaning the filter and hopefully have clear water by the 4th of July...

The ol' farm is spooky... The grass hasn't been cut in a month... Deer have broken into the deer fencing and the place looks like crap... There is evidence of lots of other animals roaming around and digging and pooping and messin' up... My chainsaw is missing but nothin' else...

I can't stay there any more... I was down to sleeping on an air mattress but the joint just weirds me the heck out...

Two more trips!!!

The appliances were kinda workin'...

No matter, we knew we were buyin' "as is"... I really have no beef with the seller... It's just what it is... Short Sales can be interesting... But we are still happy with the property... It will be fine... We're just going to have to do a "few things" before fine arrives...

Not to create suspicion but... I have heard of the ol' switcheroo, i.e. taking away perfectly good appliances and replacing them with 'wored out' ones.

Oh, Bobert, what a pain! I'm actually quite good at moving, organizing, sorting etc. and I wish to the dickens I could come along and help out for a few weeks!

...just as soon as I get out from under the latest pile of %$#@! that got uncovered as we continue settling into this house...

I'll blow up the air mattress fir you, Allison...

We need all the help we can get...

Worst part about this is that I still have two more trips... 7 1/2 hours each way in an ugly, un-air-conditioned box truck...

Yeah, Eb... I was thinking that, too but these are the original appliances... And they are 15 years old... And they are wored out...
I think we could have jollied them along fir another couple three years but the P-Vine just wouldn't have it...

"7 1/2 hours each way in an ugly, un-air-conditioned box truck"

How hot will it be, Bobert? 80's, 90's? That's a lot of stress.

All I can suggest is that you take along a couple pieces of cotton cloth, which you dampen in water, fold up, and drape over your neck. It's amazing how much that can cool you off.

Man, can't P-vine's family help?

Git yerself one a them coolers what ya plug inta tha cigarette lighter rigginfriggin and load er up with water. And, a spray bottle like Windex bottle.

From: Bobert

Man, I got a cooler that fits right between the bucket seats and drink water all day... I crank up the 2/55 air conditioning and put my headphones on and listen to my i-pod tunes all the way...

It ain't all that bad... Just long... But I've found a couple places I like to stop along the way to stretch my legs so it's okay...

I'm leaving Sunday morning for what will definitely be the next to the last trip... I haven't told the P-Vine yet... She hates it when I have to go... I hate it, too, but I gotta get 'er done...

Spent the afternoon partly organizing the tool room... I was very happy to have found my chainsaw... I thought I had hid it and I had... No matter, it's un-hid...

Going to be a big week with the Spartan trailer and tractor coming down and this load will completely empty the house so I'll be happy by Wednesday night and looking at just one last trip... Maybe I'll talk one of my hillbilly friends into renting a U-Haul trailer and doing it for me???

Well yeah... It is... June 1st is Wednesday, too and that's when I told the buyers that the house would be completely empty, carpets vacuumed and floors swept...

No choice... Gotta go... I went out last evening and told "Ugly" who wasn't much happier.. lol...

The kerchief-around-the-neck form of AC. It brings back memories.

Fifteen yeara ago, we were taking a trip into central Kansas with my elderly parents when the air conditioning in the car went out. My mother (a redhead who never handled heat well) looked pretty bad.

We persuaded her to try the damp kerchief, and in a few minutes she looked better and was much happier. She didn't want to do it, of course, but I told her she would look like a football player, so that made it all right.

In a wildlife refuge we parked the car near a prairie-dog town and waited. Soon they were popping in and out of their burrows, whistling and running around. All of us were enchanted.   I forget what birds we saw in the afternoon, but in the evening we saw and heard a barred owl. Neither of my parents had ever seen an owl. I still remember the owl, gliding through the black trees and silhouetted against the last orange of the sunset.

Fifteen years later, a damp kerchief helped us take the 95-degree heat as we watched Kansas City defeat Manchester United. Can't get much better karma than that.

Part of me thinks: why not hire a moving companyy, the fuel (gas) bills alone, and the wear and tear on the nerves...(unless you like driving all day) but the rest of me thinks: I wouldn't have enjoyed these threads so much if you'd said: "Today the moving guys arrived, packed everything up and we were in and settled in 8 hours".
All the best to you & the P-vine for a happy life in your new home.

Hey, Bobert, when you get a minute I have an old Montgomery Ward front tine tiller, probably from the 1970s, one of those heavy old workhorses. It's too heavy for me to lift and I can't start the darned thing by myself, so I'm going to sell it. I'll post a photo and you can tell me what I should describe as the good selling points. This, of course, is when you take a brief rest from all of those boxes you're helping P-Vine with. (Yes it runs, when it can get started. I had it reconditioned a few years ago, then haven't used it since.)

I put a bandana across my head then pull my gardening ballcap over it, to keep the sun off of my ears and neck. And occasionally I squirt it with my water bottle that I always keep handy out there. It is so necessary a part of working in this hot weather!

That's a good idea, combining a bandanna and a hat.

They seem to have upgraded their products, but I have a very old Misty Mate which I can attach around my waist, like a fanny pack. Fill it with water, then attach the small tubing to the brim of a cap and the air before and around me gets cooled up to 30% or somesuch. It really does work. They also have long tubing units available to cool canopies, tents, etc.

My neighbors are accustomed to my gardening look. Not only do I do the hat and bandana (many of the Mexican gardeners do something similiar - I worked this out myself, as they probably did) I also have started wearing a big baggy t-shirt - size large or XL because they're long enough that when I bend over to weed, I don't expose my lower back between my shirt and waist. I've gotten some bad sunburns in the past by not taking bending over into account.

Bobert, I know you may be wondering about buying a pig-in-a-poke, but by the time you've got everything working the way you want it to run, it'll be a prime property (just in time for the next move). Maybe at this one you won't have such a problem with the deer?

I am SURE that Bobert misread my aforementioned post...he ALWAYS does! Nobody else could be so blocked!!

My turn???

Great!!! Just returned from yet another fun-filled 3 day's of moving...

I still have one last trip and it's history but all (well, almost all) of the stuff is out of the house... There's still some stuff in the refrigerator, a filing cabinet, a vacuum cleaner and on swivel chair... Oh yeah, the P-Vine's glass cracker jar...

The farrowing barn is a different story but one more trip and it's history...

The Spartanette trailer/music studio and my Kubota tractor got loaded this afternoon and are on the road as we speak and will arrive here some time tomorrow morning... That will be another story but for now I'll just have to leave that one alone...

Okay, front tine tillers... Are you sure it's front tine and not tines under the engine, Magz???

Okay, "shit"... Yeah, GfinS just loves leaving piles of it here and there fir me... It one of them scatological things with her... I think it goes back to her toilet training days, I donno...

(GfinS scratchin' her head and wonderin', "What *is* toilet trainin?")

Blues??? I donno... I've played "old Time", Bluegrass", 3 chord country, rock 'n roll and even do some Kottke-ish stuff now and then... Just takes either beer or someone playin' it to get me in the mood... Hey, I'm married to the P-Vine so the "blues" seems to always be appropriate...

Lastly, I think I've got my box truck sold to a lady in Luray... She's had every family member and friends come up yesterdat while I was loading it to look at it and volunteered her husband to ride back with me next time and drive it home...

If I left anyone out it's because I'm tired...

Speaking of rest and smokin'... My goal was to get one the road last night and stay at the first cheap motel I came to which was a mile down the west side of the Blue Ridge near Afton Mountain... $45 (included taxes) and this place has been there since prolly the 40s... Maybe longer... That gave me an hour 1/2 jump on today's drive...

(So where's the smoke enter into it, Boberdz???)

Well, this joint so old that there'd be no use having no smokin' rooms 'cause they all smell of smoke so I says, "Hey, I got this little peaceful pipe here in my knapsack" so I turning on the TV and AC and had me a little peace time... I mean, what are they gonna do??? Charge my credit card for someone smelling smoke in the room the next morning??? Haha, friggin' ha...

Never mind...

What neighbors???

The P-Vine has been working so hard getting the pool clean and so after supper this evening she said, "I want you to swim in the pool" so what's a skinny hillbilly to do??? Yup, striped down the my, ahhhhhh, and dove off the diving board with all the style points of a ruptured pigeon but hey???

Yup, the Spartanette is here and so in the tractor... Very hairy getting it off the other trailer it came down on but in spite of the 97 degree heat and two hours of pushing it with the tractor to it's final resting place it is done...

The ice-box also showed and it now cooling and the P-Vine goes in an' loves lovingly at it... You know, they way she used to look at me...lol...

Peein'??? Inside or out??? Don't much matter to me except if someone were to give me a choice between the two as my only option, it'd be a tough decision...

And minimal regards back atcha, GfinS...

No matter...

We're takin' the day ***off*** today... This "all work, no play" has gotten to both of us so we're off to the Metrolina Expo Center for an antique and collectibles show... We di kinda need to find a coffee table that works with the rest of our antiques (which purdy much is everything we own other than appliances...) But the main reason is to just escape yet another hot day of working...

The poor P-Vine was thinking that we could take her Honda CRV and the 4X6 home-made covered trailer back to Va. fir the last load... Then I told her what is left and that kinda shot that idea down in flames...
She has offered to go with me but I know she'd be miserable riding in "Ugly"... Plus, looks as if I'll be riding back with a lady's husband 'cause I think they are going to buy "Ugly"... Great!!! I mean, "Ugly" has been a good ol' box truck but I really won't need it after the next trip... Bye, Ug!!!

As for peein'??? I think I'll just have to make this my last reference to it fir today... Me thinks that it has gotten way too much attention of late and we could all use a pee-free day... Well, at least in terms of it being a topic of conversation...

And no!!! We're not movin' on to ***other*** bodily functions... Well, at least I'm not... Who knows about GfinS??? (lol)

It is amazing that you can be so hot and worn out and 5 minutes in the pool and yer refreshed...

Going to be pushing a 100 tomorrow so I'll pack a lot of ice in the small cooler and keep it up front with me... "Ugly" (my box truck) used

Same admonition from me. Don't get too comfortable on that road. 7 hours is a long time.

In the words of the late, great Roy Orbison...

..."It's over, it's over, it's over, it's oooooooooover!!!"

Praise the Lord!!!

This one was the slobber-knocker of them all... But the truck is out in the driveway seriously loaded...

This last trip was absolutely draining and depressing... The new owner has allowed the grass to grow a foot tall... I hated being in the house but had to get the last few things out and clean the refrigerator and mop floors, vacuum, etc...

The trip back was strange... I got as far a Greensboro, NC when the Heavens opened and there was hail and rain that came down so fast that if flooded the lower parts if I-85 and the water was between a foot and 18 inches deep and the cars were just stopped with their blinkers on while we truckers weaved thru them at 1 mph and ventured thru the flooded out interstate... That added an extra hour to the drive but, hey, glad to have been in "Ugly" or I might still by in Greensboro...

As for "Ugly"??? It is sold... I have a trailer full of heavy stuff (tractor attachments, large rocks (300-400 pounds) a very heavy sculpture, etc. coming tomorrow and the buyer is hitching a ride down and will drive it back...

Glad this is behind me...

That which doesn't kill you makes you stronger...

I donno... I weighed in at 172 when I started the move and I'm down to buck 63... Body fat??? LOL...

Thanks all for your support, prayers, etc...

B~

Now's the time to settle in to the new home. Just take it a little bit slow for a while though. You can't afford to lose that kind of weight.

The still is intact, Rap... I even have woods, a creek and corn nearby so...

...cowabunga!!!

"Take it easy" is what I'm all about... I've got to unload the truck today and then put in a couple hours tractor duty while others attach chains to the heavy stuff that will be on the trailer but compared to what I've be thru this is going to be a walk in the park...

I am, however, going to get the P-Vine out this morning before the afternoon festivities begin... She' been cooped up since I left and has cabin fever...

I would like to go on record of thanking my hillbilly firend, Johnny Knott, who showed up yesterday morning and put in a good 3 hours helping me load the truck... I wouldn't be here this morning had he not shown... I'm gonna miss ol' Johnny Knott... They don't make hillbillies like him no more...

Well, ya'll... I am sorry to tucker ya'll out... It has been one fir the books and things went as planned today... All our stuff is ***here*** and "Ugly" is one it's way back to Virginia where it plans on hauling produce...

Yes, Leeneia, the property has a lot to offer... I brought down all the bird feeders this last trip and will start gettin' them up in late summer... It oughta be a challenge because of the number of squirrels here... Weren't that many back in the mountain... No many, at all... Not sure why... Mr. Clufford says it was because they got "hunted out"... I donno... More here than I've seen since living in Wes Ginny...

No matter, we're moved... It's done...

Time to get my studio set back up, get myself practiced up and ready to get back into performing...

BTW, the pool is wonderful... Instant "cool down"...

Thanks again everyone for the support...

No, Rap, I ain't got the still up yet...

Bobert, I've been reading along but not commenting much. It's an adventure, when you move yourself. I have done it many times, the biggest one was when I moved to this house. I moved everything out of the apartment (where I was using an ample laundry room as a storage locker) plus bringing back a large U-Haul full of estate stuff from an out-of-state location (I was going to move at one time, so I stored this near where I hoped to move). And two big crates from one of those U-pack the crate places. All of that had to be loaded, unloaded, stacked, organized, etc. Years later I'm still sorting some of it.

My little yard is nowhere near the complexity of where you moved from or to, but I have the same kind of beautification and multiple-use plans that will either come about very slowly, paycheck to paycheck, or faster if I win the state lottery. I enjoy reading about your adventures. Keep it up!

Hey, why doncha see that place and move out here? To Idaho? In the winter? Maybe someplace like Dingle or Orofino?

Talk about adventure!

Get unloaded, man! You need to reload within the next year!

Yeah, Magz... Moving is a pain... The P-Vine opened a box that was last packed when we were getting ready to move from Wes Ginny... That is pathetic!!!

Appreciate yer offer, Rap but my next move will be in a pine box, thank you... And the way I feel right now if it happened today, that'd be just fine, too...
