Let's clear something up right away. You get to visit San Francisco, you have (as in a distasteful obligation) to visit L.A. And you have my sympathies for that.

Irish Music in San Francisco: The Plough and Stars, The Front Room (occasionally), and An Bodhran.

Across the Bay in Oakland: The Starry Plough

These places all serve a good pint and the craic can be fierce.

Don't know about L.A.

One block west on main street from PCH.....by the Huntington Beach pier.....Gallagher's on Fri/Sat/Sun starts at 6:00 (pint is a little too cold but one will warm to room temperature if you buy two)

Thistle soccor club....Valley View in Garden Grove....call to check listings.

If you are not "hung up" on ONLY Irish...then McCab's Guitar Shop should be on your list.....its in the back room.....limited seating.

Watch your wallet in Frisco!!!!

Having recently been in SF, and living in LA, my two favorites (one from each) would be...

In LA, catch the Fenians out in Santa Ana at The Harp. They perform a mix of typical bar band covers (done fairly well) with a large rep of Irish folk and sea shanties. VERY fun.

In SF, Thursdays at Quinn's Lighthouse. Very fun evening of sea shanties and beer.

Of course, if you're around the first weekend of the month, I'd VERY strongly recommend the Hyde street Maritime museum on Saturday night. They do a group shanty sing in one of the various ships moored at the pier... it's an experience that needs to be had by any shanty fan.

That's my two and a half cents worth.

In San Francisco, The Plough & Stars is really great.

If you are in the area on September 24 - 26, try to get up to Sebastopol for the music festival. It is lovely. There is even a seisun tent. This year they are having Sharon Shannon, Martin Hayes, Dennis Cahill, & tons of others.

p.s.Look for the Starry Plough in Berkeley instead of Oakland. 3101 Shadduck Avenue.

Are there any recommendations for L.A. and / or San Diego for BLUEGRASS or traditional American music? We're going out for a family visit soon and would like to find some good clubs or coffeehouses for live music while we're there.

Hi folks.

Just got back from L.A. and San Diego and checked out Gallaghers, McCabe's and the Gas Lamp area in San Diego. Gallaghers was playing recorded reggae while we were there (6 pm), and they said their live music started at 9 and was usually rock. McCabe's is a pretty good acoustic instrument store, but they also had a large area of electic guitars. They did have some unusual things that you won't find at Sam Ash, such as bowed psalteries and hammered dulcimers, and a large collection of hard-to-find music books. It was pretty quiet and pretty small, but packed with stuff.

The folk scene in L.A. doesn't exist, as far as I can tell! The music listings in "L.A. Weekly" (whatever happened to the L.A. Free Press?) were extensive, and included a few folkies outside the city, but nothing inside that I could find. There was a pub called Molly Malone's (can't remember the street) which occasionally has Celtic, but the night we were there we damaged our ears on what would have been a pretty fair rock band had we not been in PAIN from the volume! (Getting old...)

The San Diego area had lots of clubs, and we didn't get to any of them, but I'm told that the thing to get to is their annual "Street Scene" in September. That's when they have something like 20 different stages set up around the downtown Gaslamp area, with performers from all genres, like Cajun, Mexican, bluegrass, Celtic, etc.
