Old Songs Festival 2011 NY

Subject: 2011 Old Songs Festival NY
From: CupOfTea

I kept expecting someone else to start a thread on this fabulous festival, but I guess this year it's going to be me. I've not been for 15 years, and each one of those years I've regretted not being able to go. The line up this year is as stellar as always. My Big Thrill will be getting to see Jez Lowe for the first time, though I've loved his music for two decades.

My You'll Hate Yourself If You don't Go reason is the 50th anniversary celebration of Folk Legacy records. Caroline Paton has long been a goodness in my life, the wee taste I had of her company at last year's Getaway made me realize how impoverished life has been, not being able to sing with her.

My Deeply Wonderful thrill will be that my traveling and camping partner will be the dulcet toned Margaret Nelson, she of "Let Peace Prevail" "Call Down a Blessing" and a couple dozen great recordings with Phil Cooper, Kate Early, Paul Goelz and other assorted players. Now playing solo, we're autoharp buddies as well as sharing musical tastes to a large degree. I expect to see some east coastish folks I've not seen since the 2000 Folk Alliance in Cleveland & renewing those wonderful connections.

I hope there will be Mudcat folks there who'll introduce themselves. My tent site will have a Cup Of Tea (with beads) banner & I expect to have the joy of the late night sings.

It is a marvelous festival, which I have missed once in the last nineteen years. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

And here's the link to the Old Songs Festival.

I missed some years --maybe 5-- in the 80's, and I was in Kuwait in 1997, but I've been to most. Got my tickets and hotel reservation (I got tired of being exhausted after putting up my tent in what was 1) heat, 2) a rainstorm, or 3) some combination of the two. I wanted a bed and a shower.

I'm really looking forward to this year's festival, same as EVERY year!

I'll be there, even during this "austerity year" for Hunt and me. We wouldn't miss it. We're camping in our van in the "Quiet at Night RV" area for the first time (Jeri, the main ambition to stay high and dry no matter the weather!).

The Folk Legacy booth is one of the great spots to meet and greet Mudcatters, as is the Camsco booth and Don Meixner's silver.

Old Songs is one of the highlights of my year.
I look forward to meeting you, Joanne!

Been to Old Songs every year since 1983. Not this year though. This is my favorite FOLK festival, and I highly recommend it.

We've missed a couple or three years due to conflicting gigs or whatever, but have our tickets and the big ol' white van so we can leave our tent at home and sleep up out of the mud. Will be in the "noisy at night," somewhere down near the day parking area. Don't plan to cook much, but will have coffee fixings if anyone's desperate.

Wishing I could say our absence would be due to "conflicting gigs" but limited funds is more accurate. However, Carmen and I will somehow manage to scrape together enough to do a "lobster crawl" later this summer. We hope next year to make it to Old Songs as well as to the hidden treasure of "Common Ground on the Hill" festival. (If you haven't been to this one, you ought to consider it.)

Looking forward to Old Songs. We don't go every year, but with the tribute to Folk Legacy, plus Allison & Geordie, plus Larry Hanks and Deborah Robins, plus Colleen Cleveland, this year's festival will be too good to miss.
Larry Hanks and Deborah Robins, on a rare visit from California performed at the spring weekend of the Folk Music Society of NY (Pinewoods Club). They are outstanding musicians and charming people. One of our long term members who had never gone to one of our weekends came to this weekend, because he remembered Larry Hanks from Fox Hollow. People who had not heard Larry and Deborah before are now confirmed enthusiasts. Don't miss them.
Old Songs 2011, yeah!!!

Well, it looks as though it's going to start out as "Old Sogs" as it so often does. Bring your foul-weather gear, and let a smile be your umbrella!

I must confess I'm glad for the mega-van this year, as much as I enjoy a tent...

I must confess I'm glad for the mega-van this year, as much as I enjoy a tent...

I am also exceeding glad for ours, subject to it running OK down and back. Lucky it has lots of wood interior trim to knock. Hope it ain't fake. But I never really enjoyed a tent. I always was jealous of the people with campers, especially the people who came with the boat on a trailer and ran the cocktail flag up. I just never had a choice if I wanted to stay on the grounds.

Peter

ps: whiskey makes almost as good an umbrella as a smile does.

You mean, of course, "...if Jacqui can get it tamed, with excellent advice and instruction from Kendall."

We have a 10' x 10' free-standing awning thingus that we got last Summer. Should we just set it up next to yours rather than our own site, if you're going to be the hosts for the 48-hour party and singaround?

I don't think I'll make it, though I had considered it, living only 20 minutes away now! Our car is in the repair shop with a bum starter, so even my plan to have my husband drive me in for the day Saturday won't happen...I came just for the day with a friend last year and we had fun, exhausted by 5 pm by the heat (forgot to get our refund though for leaving before the evening festivities). Hearing and meeting Elizabeth Laprelle was worth every penny of that day pass. (Thanks again to Barrry Finn for recommending her.)

If any old pals want to drive to Albany for a shower, though, (or to kidnap me) let me know. Email me at amberapple at gmail dot com, or call me at 518-322-1909.

Have fun! Hope to make it next year.

Met with many catters. Had a great time. Lady Hillary and I will probably rent something more civilized than our tent for next year. Our backs demand it.

Particularly enjoyed Sat evening at Jacqui and Kendall's place swapping tales and a few songs, enjoying the food and company. Kendall, we hope you enjoy the yogurt.

As usual, we had the "If it's raining, it must be Old Songs" situation but the audience was more interested in listening to the music than they were in giving up in the rain.

Had a great time at the ballad circle from 9 Am on Sat until we were forced to move.

I kind of stuck with old favorites this year and it worked well for me. I depend on the evening concerts to give me exposure to the new. I didn't see anything new this year that thrilled me enough to overcome my love of the Amidons, Finestkind, and the Arrogant Worms, though I was interested and pleased with what I saw of the Press Gang and Scott Ainslie. There were some acts that showed tremendous skill and musical scholarship but didn't thrill me at all with performance. I guess that's negative enough, so I'll stop there.

I tried to make a comment 2 nights ago, but messed up & deleted it & was too tired to reconstruct. I had a fabulous weekend, despite brief interruptions by rain. Between Saturday & Sunday, I got in 3 1/2 hours of shape note singing, which did my heart good. My favorite song, Bosold, was sung on Saturday. I could have died happy after just that. I caught as many sessions with Finest Kind as possible & each was wonderful! Delightful folks w/ great harmonies. Who could ask for more? In their joint sessions, I came across Larry Hanks & Kapriol'!--both great in their own way. Yes, I went to hear Arrogant Worms. I wouldn't want them as a steady diet, but they are a real kick. It was a pleasure to hear Ed Trickett in person & have a chance to chat with him. Although Harry Tuft is a Folk Legacy performer, I had never heard him before. What a sweet voice! Naturally, I went to both sessions of Folk Legacy's 50th anniversary performances. Each was great in its own way. I thought the highlight of the festival, for me, was Sunday morning--2 hours & 45 minutes of combined sacred harp & gospel singing--until I attended Finest Kinds's Sunday afternoon solo session. It was amazing!

This was my first year attending Old Songs as a retiree, rather than just starting off my summer. I spoke with & hugged numerous Mudcatters (happy hour with the Meixners--thanks, Cindy!) & once/twice-a-year friends & left the weekend with a wonderful sense of mellow. I hope I will never again feel the stress of these past couple of years. Thanks for another great Old Songs!

best,

Barbara

Home tired and happy. Alison & Geordie's Saturday workshop on Scottish song and the uncanny workshop on Sunday were transcendent! Finest Kind as good as ever, John Roberts better than ever, glad to see & hear Ed Tricket again. We only met Larry Hanks and Deborah Robins this spring, but wow! what good singers & guitar players. I understand they will return next year and will get a concert slot.
Fun seeing everyone too.
