A few months ago, a couple of posts to a more general thread mentioned the names of two programs that allow users to see internet sites like BBC TV that are blocked to foreigners. One of the programs was Expat Shield, and I've used it successfully.

Apparently it only works on PCs, though. There was another program mentioned that I'm hoping might work on a Mac. Does anyone know the name of that program? I haven't been able to find the posts in the archive.

Me, I have a PC. The information is for a friend of mine who uses a Mac. I should probably mention, too, that she mainly wants access to French TV -- France 5, especially.

I don't know anything about this software. It is supposed to be a true product. It is called Satellite Direct. You pay one amount and it gives you access to loads of countries.

They charge you a one off $49.50, but if you close the window, a pop up will appear offering it for $29 dollars.

This is the link, but don't do anything for the moment as it would be interesting to hear if any mudcatter uses or has downloaded this software and can confirm that it is pucker software and not a scam.

It would seem that if this software is OK, they cover the Mac as well.

Thanks, Arthur. I'm going to pass this information on to my friend. Expat Shield is free. But $29 doesn't seem like much to pay, if that's what it comes to.

As I said, I don't know if it is a good company or a scam. I was hoping somebody in America may have bought the software and can comment, good or bad. Please realise, that I am not endorsing it and cannot be held responsible if it is a scam, so please take care. However, if your friend does download it, please let me know on here, how it went. There are some Utube videos, that show you how to get the best out of it.

There must be somebody who has dipped their feet in.

I'd imagine the likes of the BBC use geographic IP information. For the BBC, I'd guess a UK proxy could work although I wouldn't be surprised if there is a blacklist of known proxies to prevent this.

As far as I can see, you do have a sort of dummy IP address, for that country you are trying to watch. Interesting thread. Can anybody with experience and knowledge provide some info?

Interesting. I have toyed with the idea of this, but the claims are somewhat large.

on a similar note, my Domain provider is called UK2 and they do bragg about their server centre in the docklands area of London. Yet the country icon that you can see on the FireFox Addon (et al) is Canadian.

I guess they can buy IP addresses on the IP "futures and securities make money quick" market.

I can tell you how it works with Expat Shield, anyway. It gives you an "anonymous" IP address whenever you open the program. And it does work just fine. Saw a wonderful documentary the other night on Irish history, about the Anglo-Irish conflicts in the 17th and 18th centuries. It was on BBC for Northern Ireland. And I'm in Washington, DC. Normally, I would get a message saying "Not available in your area."

Isn't Expat Shield only for British programs and for people living outside of Britain.

I would like one for my wife in Britain for Dutch TV and Radio. Anybody?

My cable provider has a subscription service for a number of foreign TV channels, in Europe and Asia, but absent are BBC and other UK channels. No Dutch either.

We get two BBC channels, BBC World News (many good comment and documentary programs) and BBC Canada, which seems to have programs that are the worst in their schedules.
