Review: Spirit of the Dance

Have just been to Theatre Royal (Norwich UK) to watch this. Left during the interval, it was dire! The tickets were v. expensive. All the music and even the sound effects of their feet tapping was recorded. The stage set was barely there. The dancing was abysmal. The Scottish number would've had Scots howling with laughter. It all resembled nothing more than a school dance show put on for the mums and dads. Has anyone else been to see it? I'd be interested in your comments if so.

Hi Eliza,

Googled for reviews; couldn't find any of the Norwich performance that were not PR rather than something by an independent entity.

However, I did find a page of SotD TripAdvisor reviews, most of which -- although they were based on a performance in Branson, Missouri (for those who don't know, it is a major holiday/entertainment destination in the US midwest, with lots of high-profile stars and high-powered shows) -- seem to agree with you...

Thank you, Yorkshire Yankee. I don't want to sound like a Grumpy, and those young dancers were obviously trying to do their best, but it honestly was a huge rip-off.

Pre-recorded foot tapping? Good grief, what is this world coming to?

I know, leeneia! And when they did a dance with shiny pails and long sticks, they didn't so much as tap them, but the recording sounded like thunder! Even a 'bagpiper' was miming to the tape, he just stood there holding his pipes, but not blowing them! Pathetic! I've watched hundreds of Morris dances, with LIVE (of course) music, leg bells and sticks, and the pleasure they gave me was immense. Last night was terrible. My friend is going tonight, wonder what she makes of it? The thing is, we haven't much spare money and we tried hard to afford the tickets, such a waste.

Agreed! Saw it last night it was just awful. The whole thing is a fake. Totally lame...

So, I take it that Spirit of the Dance is another Riverdance clone...
