Is the singer trying to sound like Dylan? I find it hard to believe that's a natural voice.

And yeah, I admit it, I'm starting to get sick of the Catholic Church being tarred as a complete whole with the brush of a minority of troubled individuals who did great wrong. Yes, cover ups and instiutional secrecy are disgusting, and I certainly think there's a lot of work still to be done to right this terrible wrong. Nevertheless, I think that the continual swipes and smears can be counterproductive, they could end up creating a bunker mentality in which there is a reduced will for self-reflection and change.

I suppose I would like to know what this song adds to the conversation of how we move forward?

1) That's Norm's natural voice
2) In order to move forward, I believe first, The Right Thing has to be done. As long as criminals are given protected status by the Catholic church, and I believe people need to notice whether that happens or not and speak out about it... or sing.

Richard, when you say "Yes, cover ups and instiutional secrecy are disgusting, and I certainly think there's a lot of work still to be done to right this terrible wrong", what do you think will help ensure that might happen? Shutting up about it?

It's one song on an album I think is great.

I would go for trying to recognise the tremendous good that an awful lot of people within the church do, to hold that up as a standard of good practice, and to show how the necessary checks and transparency can be put in place. Rather than simply ramming home an unhelpful stereotype which, while painfully close to the truth of a horrible number of cases, only hurts the majority of people who live their lives trying to do good.

Yes, we should talk about this, which is why I am, not just putting my fingers in my ears (although I do admit it's really not my style of music, which doesn't help). But I think there's talk aimed at moving forward, and talk (or singing) that just wallows in the pain and drags us deeper and deeper into the mire.

Your sentiments about the Church do not have a lot of bearing on the quality of this song or its performance. Sure, there's obviously a strong Dylan legacy showing through. Regardless, it is an original, strongly-crafted song, and it is very well done, too.

It may be a generational thing, I'm in my 20s so perhaps it's just a style that seems dated to my ears but is fresher to others for whom that's the sound of their generation. That's a guess, obviously hard to prove.

Thanks jeri,Bruce,ad,kalaughing, and bankley your a rascle, love you bud get back here some guitar. By the way i just got a guitar at an auction .It was owned by a fellow that spent 25 years robbing banks and looks by the shape of guitar ,bar fights..the guitar is talking to me .looks like a good song on the way/

"Bob Dylan has a voice very much like a dog with its hind leg trapped in barbed wire!" - Doug Dillard. "He has had nothing to say for forty years, but has kept on producing the same thing" - I said that.

I am not a (Roman) Catholic, but I am fed up of people too lazy to think for themselves slagging all Priests because of a few stinking bad apples. Yes, terrible things have been done - by a few, but thousands of good things have been done - by most.

God be with all here,

Chris.

Hi Jeri, working on a new cd proberly round christmas,
( CHRISTMAS IN A PHONE BOOTH )
I got a few gigs in January.

In Canada the, residential school system governed by the Catholic Church has had a terrible effect on the natives population which is still effected today. These culpirts that have sexualy abused native and non native children are still at large today. Protected by the Catholic Church and your donations.

Which stereotypal representation of a social group will this populist Dylan impersonator take for the subject of his next song, I wonder? "Those Muslims are all dirty terrorists"?

Then we can have the same discussion all over again.

I once asked for a critique of a song. The only criticism I got was from a guy who wondered why I hadn't written the song about something else, something HE cared about. I figured if he wanted that song, he could write it himself... but of course, he couldn't. He could bitch, though, and I suppose, for him, it was going to have to do.

Well, after all, the poor church is so desperately short of music praising itself..

..."Well, after all, the poor church is so desperately short of music praising itself.. "

I'm not sure what your point is here Smokey.

Can I just point out that the statiscal evidence of child abuse points to the vast majority of it occurring in the home.
There have been occassions recorded of it in several denominational churches, including the Anglican church, Protestant childrens homes in Northern Ireland,et al,...it's not confined to the RC church, and it's unfair to single them out.
It's a despicable crime which has to be rooted out whrrever it occurs.

For those of you who are more interested in arguing about the subject of the song, rather than the merits of the songwriter/singer, I would suggest you move it on over to a relevant thread, one of which is HERE where you will find plenty of back and forth, pro and con discussion.

BTW, Tamarack Jack is my favourite on the cd, Norman!

None of which has anything to do with good honest songwriting and heartfelt performance, Effsee.

I don't know about generational. I'm in my 50s and have never particularly liked the style. As for dated, I suppose to me, using your best "protest voice" to complain about something is a little tired.

Coming on to the topic of the song. in cynical mode, I could say it provides material for the protest singer songwriter to get angry about but I suppose more seriously, I have mixed feelings.

One one hand, like yourself, I can get annoyed with a tendency to lump in all Catholics (or all whoever) but on the other, I might ask myself if we also might be guilty of some form of suppression if we argue against the topic itself being raised?

Its about the topic. The presentation need not be hip hop to be effective or smiling ,look at my pretty whatever . if it makes you think it is only about Cathoilcs, then you miss the point..simply it is i would say bringing to justice the people responsible for this.Rome included/ then and only then, there may be peace in the valley. The U S just passed a law in the senate that will allow the justice system to pursue leagel action against Rome and that is a good start.

Well Norm, I am a Catholic, I take no offense. I loved the song and the performance. Great job I think. One thing about writing your own music is you can do it anyway you want to on whatever topic you want. The church needs a good kick in the pants from time to time for sure. Most of us all agree. They don't seem to fix this stuff fast enough ... however this is about your song .. and I enjoyed it a lot

it's healthy to get these issues off your mind. It lightens the load. If it can be done musically, poetically then so much the better. Not everyone has to agree with you or like the content nor the performance..that being said, perhaps someone will relate to the work and find something valuable in it for themselves, according to their own personal experiences... songwriting 101....
it brings to mind many cage-rattlers like Joe Hill, Paul Robeson, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, early Dylan, Baez, Murdoch, Belafonte, Steve Earle, Jim Page, Gil Scott Heron, Billy Bragg, Johnny Klegg, Eddie Reid... some of the greats in my mind and musical life... keep going Norm, you've done good kiddo..
