Judy Collins in Liverpool

After being a huge fan for over 40 years I finally managed to see Judy Collins in Liverpool on Saturday. She was absolutely magnificent. It was like she'd gone from being the folky-waif ingenue of the 60s to the earth-mother/diva of the 70s to a sassy old broad who knows where all the bodies are buried and doesn't mind spilling the beans. I won't go on too much but everything you would have wanted was there as well as a wonderful acapella version of Stan Kelly's 'Liverpool Lullaby' - a song I'd always hated until Saturday. The voice was every bit as clear and true as it ever was.

Like I said - magnificent. Anyone else catch it?

WAHHHHHH... I wanna see Judy Collins!!! I have loved her since I first heard her sing, as an unknown, at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco during an antiwar rally back in the early 60s. Nobody really knew who she was then, and I remember thinking Ooooo she's good, I like her. She's stood the test of time too, as Chris says. Totally jealous...

She recorded In My Life in 1966 and on Sunday she visited the childhood homes of Lennon and McCartney.

On Monday she was at The Dancehouse in Manchester. Again, she was in magnificent voice. She played 12-string guitar while Russell Walden accompanied her on piano.

She ran through her whole career - she made her first record in 1961, fifty years ago! She also revealed a rather wicked sense of humour, and can be candid about events in her past. All these stories should be in her forthcoming book, Sweet Judy Blue Eyes - My Life in Music.

Her tour continues with dates in England, Ireland and Wales. It's Birmingham Town Hall tonight,Tuesday, with a final date at Sedbergh Folk Festival on Sunday 26 June. All dates listed here; http://www.judycollins.com/concerts.cgi

I haven't listened yet, but there is an interview with her on Radio Merseyside show "On The Beat" with Spenser Leigh. For anyone who isn't familiar with him & his show, it is excellent. On every Saturday night & some very interesting interviews, often with obscure characters from the music biz. He is very knowledgable, (sp ?) & has written a load of books. Check his show out at "Listen Again" on Radio Merseyside. And for fellow Canadians or people in the States, it plays fine over here.

I saw Judy Collins play a gig in Miami along with Roger McGuinn, Richie Havens and Janis Ian, in late 2001.

All four of them were absolutely magnificent, but what stuck in my memory was Judy Collins' emotional tribute to New York, at the close of which she sang a heart-rending version of "Give My Regards to Broadway" which had the whole audience ( me as well, I am not ashamed to say) in tears. Remember, this was just weeks, if not days, after 9/11.

Oh yes , and what also sticks in my mind was how sexy she looked, slim and fit and with heels which wouldn't have been out of place in a catwalk parade .... Foxy Lady ....oh yeah ....

Or, as Chris B described her in his opening post, a sassy old broad ... I am delighted that she is still wowing her audiences after all these years.
