09 Jun 11 - 11:38 AM (#3167704) Subject: Tech: System files quarantined - what to do? From: michaelr So my antivirus program - Panda - tells me it's got a free update it wants me to install. So I download the .exe file and run it. It says that a previous version of the program has been detected which must be uninstalled first. Upon beginning the automatic uninstall, a warning pops up: "Some of your system files are in quarantine. If you uninstall the application, you will not be able to recover them." That can't be good, right? I assume it's to do with a Trojan that Panda found and quarantined some months ago. I had no idea that it also quarantined some of my system files. How do I extricate this Trojan from the system files and get it off my machine and them out of quarantine? |

From: JohnInKansas Although you didn't say so, assuming you're using Windows, you may be able to "restore" System files by going to Control Panel|Programs and click the "Turn Windows Features On and Off." Reselect the options you want, and run, and sometimes Windows will replace any missing System files needed for your setup. You have to have left the "installation files" on your hard drive, or if they've been deleted you'll need an installation or recovery disk to get the files from. As MMario says though, if you haven't noticed they were gone you probably don't really need them for what you've been doing. You may be able to look in the quarantine space and see what files are there. Make a list and you'll at least know what to look for if you decide you need to restore them later. John |

From: JohnInKansas It wasn't easy to find (all Google hits for Panda on the first half-dozen pages of results go to places to buy it, and none of the "shopping" pages offers a way to find out what it is); but Panda appears to have a "support site" where you can search a "knowledge base" where you might be able to find out how to access quarantined files(?). It asks for a "specific version" - which I can't provide, so I can't poke around there usefully, but you might find a FAQ that will at least tell you how to find the quarantine folder. Panda Online Support. I'd suggest starting in the "Product Knowledge Base" section, if you can figure out how to get inside of it. John |

From: Bernard I'm inclined to think your warning message is more of a caveat so that you won't go chasing Panda (there's a thought!!) in the event of something going wrong. If the files were quarantined and the system is working properly, then, as MMario has already said, you don't need them. It possibly refers to old system restore files (in System Volume Information - which you have no access to anyway) that some AV software suites are known to be erroneously identifying as infected. The best course of action would be to take a full backup (Norton Ghost or CloneZilla), run System Cleanup (C: drive properties), and when the list appears select the Advanced tab and remove all but the most recent restore point (which will probably release over 5Gb of drive space as a bonus!). This way, when you update the programme software and lose the quarantine, there won't be any issues with System Restore - and possibly the update includes a fix for the false positives. |

From: Tootler I went the other way because AVG had become intrusive and slowed down startup times considerably. I don't use Windows on my own machine, I got rid of it and went over to Linux but my wife uses Windows Vista - which is pretty dire IMHO - but she is reluctant to let me install Linux - doesn't like changes and having to do things differently. Panda is much less intrusive than AVG as all the virus definitions are held on line and has had some pretty good write ups. |
