I have the opportunity in about a month to perform with an older gentleman of my aquaintance who has expressed interest in doing a cowboy yodel while I accompany him on guitar. I'm just getting started into cowboy songs and need some ideas on standards that I could suggest. He wants me to pick the song. Also if a recording or sound file is available of the song it would be a big help.

From: Mudjack Night Rider's Lament has a great yodeling part but the song is a little on the hard side to learn.It's not your typical cowboy song, you might try and go with Ride an old Paint, or a more known and add some nice yodeling. HAve you asked the nice gentleman if he has his favorites to yodel to. He can probably answer the call since he's the yodeler. Good luck with the gig, sounds like a good one. Mudjack |

The yodel is your basic yodel, as well-- Check me on this, but my recollection is that movie and TV cowboys yodelled a lot, but it wasn't typical in real cowboys songs, which gravitated toward "Come-a-ti-yi-yippee-yippee yay" or "Whoopi-ti-yi-yo-oh" sort of things, instead-- |

It is called 'American Yodeling 1911-1946'. It covers the whole range of American yodeling - the Mainers, Patsy Montana, Roy Rogers, Emmett Miller, Monroe, Carlisle etc - it even has Tampa Red! My favourite is the DeZurich Sisters' glorious 'Arizona yodeler' - wonderful, but not simple. There's an informative essay (in English and German) by Christopher Wagner titled 'Yodeling in America'. I seem to recall that this was reprinted in Folk Roots. |
