What's an easy yodeling cowboy song?

I have the opportunity in about a month to perform with an older gentleman of my aquaintance who has expressed interest in doing a cowboy yodel while I accompany him on guitar. I'm just getting started into cowboy songs and need some ideas on standards that I could suggest. He wants me to pick the song. Also if a recording or sound file is available of the song it would be a big help.

Thanks,
Jon W.

Night Rider's Lament has a great yodeling part but the song is a little on the hard side to learn. It's not your typical cowboy song, you might try and go with Ride an old Paint, or a more known and add some nice yodeling. HAve you asked the nice gentleman if he has his favorites to yodel to. He can probably answer the call since he's the yodeler.
Good luck with the gig, sounds like a good one.

The old Jimmie Rodgers "Waitin' for a Train" is an easy enough song to play, and satisfying, as well. The yodel is your basic yodel, as well-- Check me on this, but my recollection is that movie and TV cowboys yodelled a lot, but it wasn't typical in real cowboys songs, which gravitated toward "Come-a-ti-yi-yippee-yippee yay" or "Whoopi-ti-yi-yo-oh" sort of things, instead--

"T for Texas, T for Tennesee" is one.

"Muleskinner's Blues" is another. Also, "Way Out West" and another early country popular tune called "Freight Train Blues".

Check out Jimmie Rodgers, the Singing Brakeman.

Try The Bandit of Brazil. A simple yodel at the the beginning and middle line of the chorus. Tex Ritter tune I think.

I am the quickest on the trigger, When I shoot I shoot to kill,

I am a legend down in Rio, Where they talk about me still,

I robbed a rich ranchero, He was rich beyond compare,

And for ransome held his daughter, she was young and she was fair,

Oh lay, me Gon Goucheros, Ia m the bandit of Brazil,

Oh Lay EEEeee, I'm a bad Man when I shoot I shoot to kill,

She was young and she was tender, There was love light in her eyes,

When in my arms she did surrender, very much to my surprize,

I refused her father's ransome, Oh, I kept the greater prize

Now at night we ride together, Under blue Brazilian skies,.

repeat Chorus twice.

Good luck finding a melody track, the only recording I have seen of this song is by Nicky Seeger, wonder where he is now.

"Blazin' the Trail to My Home"

"Prairie Lullaby"

"Cattle Call" -- this one would be my recommendation. Eddy Arnold. The LeAnn Rimes CD "Blue" has a duet on it with her and Eddy Arnold singing a harmony yodel. Really nice.

On the subject of yodeling, I would like to draw attention to a marvellous CD on the German label Tikont. It is called 'American Yodeling 1911-1946'. It covers the whole range of American yodeling - the Mainers, Patsy Montana, Roy Rogers, Emmett Miller, Monroe, Carlisle etc - it even has Tampa Red! My favourite is the DeZurich Sisters' glorious 'Arizona yodeler' - wonderful, but not simple. There's an informative essay (in English and German) by Christopher Wagner titled 'Yodeling in America'. I seem to recall that this was reprinted in Folk Roots.

Thanks for the link. (It may be too late to help, since eleven years have passed since the first post.)

It was interesting, the way Patsy Montana swooped from note to note (at times) without being irritating or inept. I believe that many others have tried to do that and have failed.

Seamus Kennedy does his take on 'Cowboy's Sweetheart' (complete with yodeling) called "I Want To Be A Cowboy's Sidekick" on his newest CD "Sidekicks & Sagebrush."   Just sayin', y'know?

Probably the easiest "cowboy yodeling" song - for a duet, that is - is the Berrymans' song "Double Yodel."
Check it out.
