BS: IDIOT children

I mean really, how obvious do you have to BE these days to get busted with as little as one gram of pot! I know he's 16 and 6 feet tall but I'd still like to paddle his asymmetrical little fanny!

Just my thoughts but I not think you call children idiots, if a lad of that age has been caught with a gram of dope....so what, did many people of our generation not do the same, I was not inclined to smoke dope but my mates did. Fortunately they were never stopped by the police, but for the grace of god go I.

Agreed Mrrzy but shit happens eh?

Tell him he's gotta leave the pot at home in a safe place.

I agree with Raggytash in that you shouldn't call him an idiot....that word is just so blase and over used....no you should call him something more creative...I for one prefer the term demonspawn when referring to children.

As for his idiocy for getting caught with less than a gram...well, if working on the Guide to Bad Parenting has taught me anything, you have to be creative in your punitive measures...while paddling his butt, may be humiliating for him, (or for you if he just laughs) it just isn't enough.

One thing you could do, is to look everywhere for his stashes when he's not around...and then replace it with oregano....while you keep and smoke the good stuff yourself. Then, he will take his "pot" and smoke it with his friends...and then wonder why no one got high. They'd get pissed at him, for leading them on...and he would be quite embarrassed. Then, every time after you find one of his stashes, you can repeat...it will work until he catches on....be careful, it could back fire. He could pull the same trick on you.

Idiot is perfectly fine... it denotes disdane for inane actions. I doubt it is intended as degrading, demeaning or in any way abusive in this case... I think it expresses disappoinment more than anything else. Lighten up eh?

We just sent to an English relative a DVD by a clinical psychologist called Nigel Latta. It's called 'The Politically-Incorrect Guide to Teenagers.' The constant theme is that they are basically not right in the head. So Mrrzy is quite right.

Nigel Latta is a very, very funny man. The DVD is a collection of lectures given to a large audience composed largely of parents, but with a scattering of teenagers there. The teenagers mostly looked stunned and thoughtful, the parents were almost crying with laughter, when they weren't looking wryly at each other.

He wasn't an idiot, he was unlucky. The idiots are the people who would pass a law that allows the arrest of someone for being found with one gram of pot on them. The idiots are the ones who legally attack people for making their own free choice to use a relatively harmless plant for personal recreation, while sending other people overseas to invade and occupy smaller countries. The idiots are the people who design and build atomic bombs. And I could go on with further examples of extreme idiocy...but I won't.

However, when one lives in a society with idiotic laws and idiotic policies, both domestic and foreign, one is wise to act carefully and not run afoul of those laws. But if all the teenagers who've ever had a gram or more of pot on them were arrested, they've have to turn 3 or 4 states of the USA into a giant walled compound just to contain all of them! (standing room only) And that's why I say he was unlucky.

I just read a book from the library written by an English woman whose son got into the 'new' pot - something called skunk.

He flunked out of his expensive high school. He got a 16-year-old pregnant. (One abortion got through.) One day he slugged his mother in the side of the head and broke her eardrum. He left home and lived hand-to-mouth.

And all the time he maintained that his dealer was a great guy and he trusted him completely.

Marijuana is no longer cute.

Mrzzy, the dealers are after money. Cut off the kid's money supply and they will lose interest. I hope.

Force the authorities to present the 1 gram of pot in evidence.
Make them test it. Have a second test done by outside authorities.

There should not be enough to test, or it is lost, or it has been replaced by the police etc.

If you are in Massachsettes the fine is $50 and is not even a misdemeanor. IT is equivalent to a parking ticket.

An idoiot has greater mental capacities than a moron and should have an IQ as high as 50 or 60

I have never been in favor of marijuana use. I think it's a pretty foolish practice. I think making its private use illegal is even more foolish, and very counterproductive, but it's done wonders for organized crime.

What I would be in favor of would be leaving people alone to make their own decisions about whether they choose to injest marijuana, tobacco, caffeine, refined sugar, alcohol, laxatives, antibiotics, tranquilizers, and other harmful drugs....but to advise them clearly regarding the specific health risks of each.

And then let them decide. That's what you all do anyway. Every day. YOU decide on your chosen vices.

You don't like other people deciding what you should do on your own time. You don't like them deciding what you should eat, drink, smoke, or do. Don't think you have the right to decide for them either. You don't. Nobody does.

A number of States have already decriminalized pot, the only sensible thing to do. I certainly realize it has some ill effects on some people in some quantity but nothing like alcohol. The teen mind is not sufficiently developed to make intelligent decisions about "little things" like that. He will simply have to suffer the consequences but you need to try to take it in stride and support the kid but not the poor decision.

One friend of mine had six kids; In the sixties and seventies, they grew it between the corn. They dried it in the house and, being a long way up a dirt road, wee alert to any intruders long before arrival. The kids have all become more than acceptable members of society, including a graduate of MIT.

I'd tell you what my kid did at that age but he is still embarrassed by it, 30 years later.

Mrzzy it's understandable to react like that but my guess is that he was probably shocked into not wanting to repeat the incident ever again, a similar thing happened to mine. But 16 is still young and we sometimes do daft things around that age that we would rather forget, just part of experience. We can only hope that they learn by the mistakes.

Unusually, I agree with MGoH wholeheartedly.

In the UK, it is actually forbidden in schools to call any child such names.

I used to stress about my kids doing anything like that, but learned quite quickly that juvenile curiosity trumps parental advice every time. I was fortunate that their curiosity didn't run to drug use.

All you can do is bring them up with knowledge of the dangers of certain activities, and hope that one day you'll hear the best four words of all,........"You were right Dad!"

Calling them idiots is not only pointless, it may provoke a rebellion and further problems.

What was idiotic (to me) was getting caught, not getting high.

However it turns out he was ratted out, which makes me feel a little better about how stupid he was being (a lot less than I thought) BUT he feels that since he was ratted out he made no errors in judgment in getting to where he COULD be ratted out, so that is where the argument is now.

I don't call him an idiot to his facce but he knows I think it was imbecilic of him to get caught, or to end up with someone whom he knew was not getting on well with his own parents... it was the grandmother's boyfriend who called the cops.

And my kid was the one carrying the scale, so it looks worse than it was...

*sigh* all over again.

A bit belatedly ~~ WHAT, precisely, is this thread about? I have a feeling that the OP should have linked to some news item but didn't; so that, while I extrapolate that it is in some way concerned with a 16-yr-old who got busted for possession of some minuscule quantity of pot, the details seem to be exiguous. May we have the link, or some more details of the original story, please?

I made no mention of English law, aso your comment is both ill informed and irrelevant.

I do however have considerable knowledge about the operation of English schools, having worked in one for sixteen years, and I assure you that a very good way to terminate your employment is to call any child any such name.

You really must improve your aim when delivering your well known snide asides.

A close relative of mine, who'd been very bright and easy going , could pick up tunes and play them on practically any instrument after hearing them only a couple of times, sailed through exams, enjoyed learning and was put up for a scholarship to one of the best English public schools 'experimented' with marijauna.

He dropped out of school, has no qualifications, now has the attention span of a gnat, the commonsense of a 5 year old, is a drug addicted paranoid schizophrenic with violent temper tantrums when he doesn't get his own way, a 'relaxed' attitude to other peoples possessions ( what's yours is his) and has had all of the side effects listed below

    * Impairs memory and learning skills
    * Can lead to depression and decreased motivation/interest
    * Can affect work/school attendance/performance
    * Can interfere with adolescent emotional and cognitive development.

Long-term (cumulative, potentially permanent effects of chronic abuse)

    * Can lead to addiction
    * Increases risk of chronic cough, bronchitis, and emphysema
    * Can interfere with immune system
    * Increases risk of cancer of the head, neck, and lungs

Add double pneumonia to the list, the cancer was neck cancer

If getting busted stops the lad from going through all this then it will have been a blessing in disguise.
