12 Jun 11 - 08:17 PM (#3169602) Subject: RE: June/Barry Finn Mem. Shanty Session@Press Rm, NH From: SINSULL Strange how someone can make such an impression on you. I often think of Barry and "magic" Barry moments usually still not accepting that he is dead. Just last week a man walked by our office on Preble Street and I almost took off after him - a Barry look-a-like. I miss him. |

14 Jun 11 - 03:30 PM (#3170601) Subject: RE: June/Barry Finn Mem. Shanty Session@Press Rm, NH From: RoyH (Burl) How I wish I could be there to sing a song in Barry's honour. I met him just once, when he was on a visit over here, and he made my day by telling me I was one of his favourite singers. More importantly he sang a number of great songs in a vividly wholehearted fashion. He sang one he wrote himself, about his son, which had my wife in tears. She,who had spent years of her life working with special needs people, understood the message of his song which told people to look beyond the handicap and see the person beneath. It was one of the outstanding moments in my life in folk music. A while later I was in America for the Eisteddfod 2009, where John Roberts told me the sad news of Barry's passing. |
14 Jun 11 - 03:37 PM (#3170606) Subject: RE: June/Barry Finn Mem. Shanty Session@Press Rm, NH From: RoyH (Burl) I hit 'submit' accidentally. The posting should have continued thus - Barry Finn's name is remembered with respect in the Harris house. Elaine and I will raise a glass to him at the appropriate time (adjusted) on Saturday. Burl. |

While I've always been interested in songs of the sea, listening to Barry back at the PMFF's in 2008 and 2009 really got me interested specifically in shanty singing. Wish he was still with us.
