About.com gives a list of 10 Trailblazing Female Musicians at
http://altmusic.about.com/od/top10lists/tp/10-Trailblazing-Female-Musicians.htm

and look whose at number 1! Well, well, well. It's none other than the patron of our festival!

It says of her:-

Shirley Collins was a 19-year-old singer and folk-music enthusiast when, in London in 1954, she met legendary ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax. Soon after, she was traveling through the Deep South of America, making field recordings of hillbillies and bluesman. A diligent student, Collins became a repository of folksong, both English and American, and grew into a towering, definitive figure in the folk revival. She mixed old forms with new (1964's jazzy collaboration with Davy Graham, Folk Roots, New Routes) and employed ancient, archaic instruments to critique modern Britain (1969's legendary Anthems in Eden). For Collins, cataloging oral musical traditions was a fiercely political act, putting history back in the hands of the people.

Shirley leads two events at our festival -

Bryan Creer and I are researching Sussex tunes to arrange for the part-playing session, which will be for any instrument, and also for the general tunes practice session.

As well as making the dots and midis available in advance through the website, we plan to give people facsimile copies of the tunes in the manuscripts held by the Sussex Archaeological Society in Lewes.

We've also done our three-part arrangements for Event 5, which is for any melody instrument (or any instrument at all provided oven-ready chords aren't used as they would spoil the balance of what we've written):

This is the only event at the festival that is being promoted by another organiser, the Union Music Store. They gave us most of the tickets and we sold them and announced that the event was sold out.

Just a reminder that The Lamb, 10, Fisher Street, Lewes BN7 2DG, will welcome tunes players and the occasional singer from noon - 6.00 p.m. on Saturday 8th. October. The Lamb is currently serving a fine pint of Everards Tiger as a guest beer.

The forecast is for dry weather, but there is room to dance inside if the forecast is wrong.

The main singaround on Saturday is in the Royal Oak from 3.00 - 6.00 p.m., led by Sandra Goddard.

The atmosphere throughout the Festival was terrific and I hope everyone had as good a time as I did.

It certainly was a great time, Valmai and a big Thank You from all the committee to all the artists and enthusiastic audiences alike. The all day dance displays made such a good impact on the atmosphere in the town in the Saturday .
