This is a hard one..so many to choose from!Over here in the surreal land of Belgium I would plump for

The ships are sailing

The High Reel

My love is in America

(Could have chosen many others but I like those and they're popular here)

My list varies but these are always some of my favourites: The Silver Spire, The Moving Cloud and The Golden Eagle.

There was a thread in umf recently that mentioned the Acrobat and I have subsequntly heard I have on a Tom McConville/ Pauline Cato CD which is a "must learn" tune to me and Sunday night I heard somebody playing President Garfield which has become another one I have to learn. I saw the Swedish Jig mentioned in another thread in Mudcat and Soldiers Joy in another... How can I have just 3?

Angelina Baker has survived over the years. Chief O'Neal's Favorite and The Gypse Rover would be my other two choices.

Banish Misfortune (Varnish Me Foreskin) - I've known this tune for a long time, and I never seem to get tired of it.
Morrison's Jig and The Butterfly get played a lot, but I am starting to get tired of them.
Only three - sheesh! We do loads of others. It's rare anyone can get folks to learn something new, but the most recent hit is Showman's Fancy. (I think it's the same as Bill's Showman, with a whole bunch of triplets in the second part.)

It is hard to narrow it down to three, but at our session the crowd likes to hear Drowsy Maggie, Musical Priest, and The Mouth of the Tobique.

oh you mean the tunes I play the most - not the ones I hear the most, awe that's dufferent.

Farewell to anywhere (in Eminor of course) a rant on fiddle - hours later I fall over on the floor passed out.

or

My version of (lemme see the hardest sob tune I can imagine)no instead Coleman's version of the Orange Blossom Special- I know he did not play this but heck I can fake the style -

and

The 29 and 3/4 part long dance that they never wrote down - The Last Tune -

Harpgirl, try searching at http://trillian.mit.edu/~jc/music/abc/FindTune.html I don't know whether these are there but it is worth a try.

Jon

PS What are your 3 favourites?

Jon...I was hoping someone else would look; I am soooo lazy....Innisher, Jig of Slurs, Morrison's...(current favorites to play)...to sing: Local Flowers, Wings of a Dove, Gray Funnel Line...the disappearing harp

harpgirl, I searched the net for Mouth of the Tobique quite awhile ago (come to think of it, maybe 2 years now) and finally got the music as a photocopy from the Fiddler's Fakebook. Les had seen my query on Mudcat and sent me the copy. Our session group plays our own version that has evolved over time.

harpgirl, I just checked, and the tune finder (link above) does have Mouth of the Tobique now.

..thanks Alice. I guess I might have to lift a finger to go to Trillian...it's just that the mental stress of my work often makes me physically lazy!! I didn't realize it was in the fakebook either and I look at that thing every week! Trillian is a great resource!harp

I don't get to sessions very often these days, but currently in heavy rotation on my fiddle are:
  1. Ashley MacIsaacs Reel (by Brenda Stubbert, on her album "In Jig Time")
  2. Trip To Windsor (I'm trying to make these 2 into a set together but they have very similar beginnings and I tangle them up with unpredictable results)
  3. The Headlands
Going Irish, it'd be maybe:
  • Galway Hornpipe
  • The Banshee
  • O'Carolan's Draught
  • and a few dozen more...

Whiskey 'fore Breakfast (song and inst.)/St. Annes Reel

The Jolly Beggar (song)/ Redhaired Boy

Tatter Jack Walsh (fingerstyle)

Unclenort, if you're still out there can you (or anyone) post the first line of the first verse of Ginseng Sullivan? I can't make out all of what either Blake or Tony Rice say there. Thanks,

Frankie

Bravo, McMoo, for putting in My Love is in America What a great tune! My other top choices are: Bunker Hill (reel), and The Heathery Cruach, also a reel. They have an excitement and lift that really make sessions take off.

I'd have to go for Hesleyside Reel, Hexham Races, and a hornpipe - either Steamboat or Redesdale or even better, one of Joe Hutton's 'traditional hornpipes' in G that he didn't have a name for! (No way would I want them all in the same set, though...)

For me it changes all the time, but currently Ed Reaveys Hunters House has to be one of my all time favourite reels. There a Kerry polka I think its called Knockaboule that always brings down the house. Finally Gravel Walks, we often finish up with that one.
