What was the take on the Bob Dylan tribute.!!?

I was somewhat disappointed with the overall results that I have heard aired so far.

Maybe it was a last minute rushed job, a good idea though.

Just thought of Cyril Tawney, I think he wrote a few good uns

Mind you the way George Papavgeris has been going these last ten years its worth revisiting his earlier works.

Chris Flegg will soon be catching him up too.

I'll think of another later

Ben Campbell from Folk on the Moor has a reasonable port folio of originals

Even Mike Deavin is worth knowing about, he was prolific in the 90s. Lives in Whetstone.

Country rock: John Prine or Steve Earle or both

Folk: Paul Seibel or Tom Waits or both

Blues: Taj Mahal or Buddy Guy or both

Old Time/Bluegrass: Ricky Scaggs or Emylou Harris or both

Pure country: Randy Travis or Loretta Lynn or both

I keep looking at the thread title and puzzling over exactly what is meant by a "tribute album"

There are lots of worthy names here which in many cases, I suspect, simply represent individuals' favourite artists.

The OP wrote:

Which I find delightfully vague. In particular, how would such an album differ from a "best of ..." compilation.

I think to earn a tribute, an artist has to go beyond simply being popular but has to have made a significant contribution to music - in Mudcat's case, folk and blues - however you may define that.

IMO many (but not all) of those involved in tribute albums and concerts to 'stars' have suspect motivations. This occurred to me when I recently saw a YT vid of a tribute concert to Nick Drake and one Lisa Hannigan's quite inappropriate rendering of 'At the Chimes of a City Clock'.

19 Jun 11 - 12:29 PM (#3172899)
Subject: RE: Who deserves a tribute album?
From: GUEST,matt milton

yeah, I've got to say I've never heard a Nick Drake cover that had any point to it. I feel the same way, I might add, about lots of virtuoso singer-guitarists: Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, Dave Evans et al. The guitar playing and the song are part and parcel. Take one out, and you're left with not a lot.

...though I suppose you could sing em a capella...

I once had the idea that you could do a great British-folk covers album of X Ray Spex's Germ Free Adolescents. Whenever I listen to it, I'm struck by how modal Poly Styrene's vocal lines are, and for that matter, how modal and crumhorn-like the sax playing is. Sadly of course, it really would be a tribute album now, since the untimely death of Poly.

Also, from a cynical marketing point of view, if I were an enterprising label-owner, I would put together a "Folk Tribute To Nick Cave". I can definitely hear Martin Carthy, say, tackling one of the morbid Aussie's murder ballads.

I'm not so sure the epithet "star" should be applied to folk singers. I thought that went out in the late sixties. However, Utah Phillips was one of my favorite performers. Two wonderful albums created to honor him were "Singing Through the Hard Times" by a variety of artists, And "Strangers in Another Land" by the sublime Rosalie Sorrels

Buddy Holly For sure. It's being released this year, I've heard about half of it On line. Eclectic original covers, Brilliant! Except for Paul McCartney who sounds like a 70 year old Englishman doing a too long poor imitation of and 80 year old Mississippi Delta Blues man covering a 22 year old Texan.
