Pizza is HOW MUCH $????

I just called Vito's. Two 12s with the works is $30 delivered with tip!!! Greco (crustless) is $45!!! WTF?

I can make my own, far better, for $15... and I am talking FAR FAR better. Is it like that where you are? What is going on? This seems just crazy to me. Used to be that I would order pizza because it was actually cheaper than to make my own unless I was making a bunch and freezing them. Did I miss something?

I am truly perplexed.

Anyway... ya got any good recipes for sauces or crusts? On accounta I ain't ever gonna order a pie again!

When I was a young boy, my mother would give me a quarte,r which covered the price of a slice and a drink.

Always preferred my own efforts, to the greasy lump that so mant pizza parlours churn out. Mind you some of the supermarket ones ain't too bad, and with a few home additions, work well.

I've been working on making the perfect pizza dough for quite a few years and am pretty close to it now. This site has become my latest inspiration and I pretty much use their recipe and philosophy except for quantities and most importantly I use fresh yeast, which, I am convinced, is a crucial ingredient to achieving the perfect dough.

Yeah, I had an extra-large with 2 toppings delivered to my rural home when I had a crew of teenagers helping out a few months ago, and with tip it was over 50 freaking dollars!!!

I usually make my own, too, and intend to do so from now on! Don't have a big enough food processor, bobad, so I'll prolly keep on kneading it with my bare hands!

I use 1 cup of flour and 1/2 cup water for a 12" pizza.

$30 delivered with tip!!! ...

It's the high price of fuel for the delivery that does it.

And they probably charge a little extra to your place, 'cause I've heard some of the pitons have come loose on the scarf they have to rope up, and the canoe you leave out for crossin' the river has that broken paddle and no life jacket - not to mention the mean streak in the lead dog when they come across the tundra by team sled. (The rope bridge over the chasm is getting a little frayed too. Maybe some cable work would fix that up.)

Pizza crust isn't that difficult to make, but if you don't want to bother or you're in a hurry you can make a nice pizza using pita bread as the crust. I get the large pitas. If you like the crust crispy, you can prebake it a little. Then just add your toppings, put it in the oven till the cheese melts, and you've got a good pizza with ingredients tailored to your taste. I like fresh tomatoes, mozzarella and a little parmesan, and fresh basil. Sometimes I add mushrooms, onions and peppers.

Vito's is overpriced, and make a pretty lame pizza. They bake it with the cheese on top of the ingredients.

Romano's here in SJ charge $9.00 for a 12 inch. I phone and drive over to pickup myself. IMHO, they make the best pizza in the world next to .....

Paulus's Pizzeria in Albufeira, Portugal .... paid 9.00E for an absolutely outstanding pie. Worth every Euro.

Little Tony's Pizza on Weston Road, Toronto ... been so long I can't recall the price.

sIx... I haven't had Vito's for a long time. I do recall being disappointed with the pie, lasagna and fish & chips (Mum likes it and it was the best in town at one time). Since the son took over full time it's gone downhill.

Making pizza is a gold mine for the pizza joints. Pizza itself costs mere pennies to make. And most of the carryout I have had in recent years is heavy on the dough and light on "substance."

I know it is less fun, but I suggest getting a nice whole-wheat pie from the store and adding your own sauce--lots to choose from--and ingredients--don't forget the anchovies. (Yes, I said, "anchovies!") The cost is a fraction of parlor pizza, and it is much more healthy. In fact, I am going to do just that for dinner tonight!

gnu .... I agree ... Vito's has gone down hill after the son took over. They use to make a fabulous Ceaser salad ... even that is a disappointment now.

Making your own pizza certainly is the best way to go, I can't argue against that ... but sometimes after very busy day, and one's energy has been completely zapped, 'takeout' has to take precendent over making your own meal.

Saul ... yes! Anchovies are a must ingredient.

There are only two things that taste like anchovies.

There was an article about delivery pizza costing more online than ordering by phone or going to the shop to order and picking it up later. Domino Pizza delivery was the one that was mentioned but still pricey all the same online or otherwise I believe it worked out at a similar price £20-£30. No wonder the kebab shops do so well in the UK. There is no comparison to a good pizza but after a night out the last thing you want to do is eat something costing the same price as the taxi fare.

Anchovies and salt cod, obiously.

Anything else that I can think of tastes much better than anchovies, with the possible exception of the crap I'm going to have to swallow next week before a full digestive tract checkup, and that's an entirely different flavor treat.

Anne Chovies?

sIx... I called Vito's after I called Greco. BTW, I like Greco even tho I will NOT pay THAT $. I like to get geared up with grated mozza and mushrooms and some other stuff because their pies are not cooked. They are only warm. I cook em for another 20 to 30 minutes with extra stuff on them and they are deeeelicious. But, I guess I'll be cooking my own from now on. Only way I'll be eating Vito's lasagna is if I buy it at COSTCO and bake it myself. Then, if I get one like the last time (maybey 4 tbsp of sauce) I'll be able to complain "where it hurts".

Soooo... what's YOUR pizza sauce recipe Mudcatters?

Pizza dough is pretty much a white bread dough with some olive oil in it. If you want it a bit more flavorful add a tad of barley malt flour. Not too much though or it will get heavy.

If you can only get dried yeast, then start it in a jug with warm water and a little sugar and make sure that it rises before you use it. That stuff can get stale and it can get stubborn if the water isn't warm enough.

We get most of our bought out pizza from Papa Murphy's or the bake at home from the grocery store, and we augment it with extra toppings of our own choosing.
