From: Bee-dubya-ell Just when you thought the supply of pointless and inane thread topics had been completely exhausted, that the bottom of the barrel had been reached, that the Mudcat equivalent of The Billion names For God had been spoken and that the lights were about to go out forever, we come to this.... So... which type of cottage cheese do you prefer, large curd or small? I'm asking because I've had a cottage cheese epiphany of sorts. I've always bought small curd cottage cheese, but have never really given any thought to why until recently. After a bit of consideration, I have come to this stunning realization: I find the word "curd" inherently distasteful. "Curd" sounds too much like "turd". It's also an anagram for "crud". I prefer not to eat turds or crud and I would actually prefer not to eat anything called a "curd". However, since I am unable to force the cottage cheese industry to use a more appealing word to refer to the lumps in their products, I have been subconsciously seeking to lessen the distasteful act of curd eating by choosing the product with smaller curds. Now, I suppose some astute thinker is going to point out that if one were to take the large curd option there would be fewerof the distasteful sounding curds in the package, but my curd-averse mind doesn't work that way. It's about size, not quantity. Having a mouthful of small curds is distasteful, but having a mouthful that amounts to one or two giant curds is unbearable. Well, after performing a bit of amateur psychoanalysis on myself, I have come to grips with my curd aversion and, today, armed with the knowledge of the existence of my minor neurosis, stared that sucker down and bought a tub of LARGE curd cottage cheese! It's delicious! That doesn't mean I now find "curd" to be an intrinsically beautiful word like "azalea" or anything, but I no longer care about the size of curds. They no longer have power over me. However, the thought of a dollop of large curd cottage cheese atop a serving of lime Jello still gives me a bit of the creeps. |

It's nice to find another person who cares about the sound of words and who toys with word associations. Just the other night, the word 'gusto' was in the cross-word puzzle. I said, "I've always thought that was an ugly word," and the DH nodded assent. That kind of thing is why we're still in love after 35 years. As for cottage cheese, I guess I prefer the small curd, but I've cut back on all octtage cheese since learning how salty it is. |

I've only ever eaten ricotta in cooked foods, but you could make a culinary statement with your bowl of fruit and ricotta, or ricotta with a dollop of mayo on top. I never see low fat large turd cottage cheese......The tinier turds, the small turd cottage cheese is available in low fat and no fat as well as the higher fat content. Obviously I too have noticed the word problem for years but I almost always refer to curds as turds just for the helluva it. I'd find it much more disgusting if you said you had small curd diarrhea instead of the "shits." Spaw |

Interestingly enough, we winter in South Carolina and I can find Breakstone low-fat large curd cottage cheese there (2% milkfat), but not so in Michigan. So we tend to small curd during the summer. |

I think Cabot's (from Vermont) is the best tasting of the brands I can buy locally. Faaaaaaar superior to Hood or the store brand in the flavor department. Linn |

From: Becca72 For me, curd size doesn't factor in at all...the only cottage cheese that doesn't totally gross me out is the stuff with pineapple in. Something else I have trouble with - "clotted cream". From what I've heard, it's wonderful; however it reminds me of cream that's had some sort of accident and is on the mend. BLECK! |
