26 Jun 11 - 02:20 PM (#3176782) Subject: RE: Review: Music of the Ottoman-American From: Q (Frank Staplin) Looks like an excellent set for those interested in the music of the old Ottoman Empire, with emphasis on eastern Europe, Turkey and neighboring states such as Syria, Armenia and Lebanon, and North Africa. I will order it, although the sound on these old recordings from 1916-1929 could be poor. Among the pieces is Miserlou, the old Middle Esstern melody known also in Sephardic and Greek music, and discussed in a thread (threads?) here. The set is composed of recordings made in New York for those who came to America in the period following WW1. There are 56 tracks on the 3-cd set. The revenge of the British following WW1 dissolved the Ottoman Empire into states with incongruous boundaries, leading to bloody conflicts that continue today.
