Scheduled moments include the energy of The Press Gang, Jezz Lowe's wonderful songs, the tear inducing hilarity of the Arrogant Worms, and the warmth of Finestkind's Dutch Barn performance this afternoon. Unscheduled would be the somewhat scared looking little woman who stood up at the songwriters' swap this morning and delivered a lovely piece about Mary (Jesus and Bob's mom) and a manger-mouse in a lovely, clear voice, a capella and beautifully on pitch. She should sing more. Also the woman who danced through the next to last piece at this morning's shape-note sing with two large flags, making no sound but for the faint ripple of fabric while the roof rang with a four-part hymn. It was an entrancing, if unanticipated, performance. |

I thought the Saturday afternoon celebration of the Marriage Equality Act was exceptional. Added to the program hours after the legislation was approved just a couple of miles away in Albany, I thought the celebration was a perfect example of how music can join people together and help create change. Ellis and Ruth Pelham did a great job of leading the sing, and the final "This Land is Your Land" was very moving. I'm writing a piece for my blog and posting some pictures about the entire weekend. |

I'm honored to be a member of that family since 1973 or '74. Then there was that cook out at our site with our old friends, the Woodchucks, John Roberts, as Peter mentioned, I love his singing and he did Carrying Nelson Home proud, or I should say he did Mike O'Connor proud. Alouette and Mike Islin were there but they suddenly disappeared before the chow was ready! Don Meixner added to the mix with his picking and singing. Our dear friend, Jeri graced us with her presence, Mary, Hollowfox brought a big box of strawberries and chocolate cake. Peter and Joanne Sousa came by; they are always a delight.Rose Sheehan added a very welcome harmony to Carrying Nelson Home. Kathy Westra and George Stevens, always a pleasure to see them. E Barnacle who likes to debate Jacqui :-) and Lady Hillary joined us for the cookout. Allison and Hunt came by and turned down a drink of my best Scotch! :-) Joy Bennett and Cris Caldaway really rounded out the jovial crew. Sunday morning, Edmund (CET) dropped in for a chat. That was a pleasant surprise. |

I wasn't there, but from the description of the song I would guess that the woman was Heather Wood, sole surviving member of the Young Tradition and one of the stars of the 1960s British folk song revival. I can't imagine two people writing songs about a mouse-in-the-manger-at-Bethlehem. I had a wonderful chat with Heather when she described (but did not sing) this song & I made sure to steer Margaret Nelson her way, for the "Bittersweet Christmas Band" she's in seek out unusual Christmas/Solstice/Turning of the Year songs. Biggest surprise for me were the Arrogant Worms, who I'd heard about for ages but never seen. I found them genuinely funny & wondered how much my Canadian friends would enjoy them. A lovely set of surprises was how many folks from a decade ago still remembered me and were glad I made it back finally. Conversely, the well known who I didn't expect to see there, came in the form of a bandmate and her husband who were there to cheer on Carol's boy David, fiddler for the Freight Hoppers. Serendipity surprise was Caroline Paton introducing me to Dillan Bustin. What a treat that was, not least of all, visual (middle aged eye candy, that man). Not a surprise, but a distinct delight to meet and hear Jez Lowe, after singing his songs learned off albums for well over a decade. oh yeah, I was surprised to find how many folks don't care for rum balls. The musical standard was high as usual and quality of performers was the same. John Roberts surprised me with a song at his uncanny songs workshop that I have never heard before and don't know the name. A song that frequently mentions "Willie". I got to reconnect briefly with Andy Cohen. And a tale told by Peter Sousa during a conversation with him and Kendall still has me laughing. Meeting Kathy Westra was a treat. And sharing time and tonics with Jeri is always fun. Allison and Hunt stopped by for a Hello as did BBC. Abbey Sales did but I don't think he is aware that he did. Many others came by the booth to say hello and try on on some jewelry. A good time as always. Don |

From: Jeri I'm having a problem imagining Heather Wood looking scared, not to mention being in a workshop that early on Sunday morning. I might likely be wrong about who it was though, not having been there. CupOfTea/Joanne, I had no idea you had that much trouble getting rid of those rum balls! I only had one, but would have gladly helped you out by eating a handful or two. (Yummy-thanks!) My only real surprise was learning how to sing overtones. I tried that unsuccessfully for a long time, so I went to Guy Mendilow's workshop thinking nothing would change, but at least I'd hear HIM do it. We all got going, and I heard loads of overtones coming from everybody, including me! Now, I can try to make it better. It's always a pleasure to see old friends, and to catch up or simply listen to stories and jokes. The G & T's with Don and Cindy were wonderful, as always, Kendall & Jacqui's place was a home base. I also go to be part of a flash mob that wasn't all that flashy or mobby, but at least I know I can still play fiddle. I'm still tired. I didn't ever stay up really late or drink much, but I DID get back Sunday night and go to work on Monday night. I'd still like to go back for some more music. |
