Folk Errors

Before I knew any better I thought Mike Harding was sitting in the studio playing his guitar whilst reading out the folk charts on his Radio 2 show. The image still persists somehow...

Well he isn't, but the image persists that he is... unless you think that as well in which case I'm happy I'm not alone! It's not much - only a small thing, but the devil is in the details, as they say...

So, what is he doing?

Well, whilst I have every respect for Mike as a musician, I don't think he is is quite the same league as Nic Jones, and it it a pretty open secret that he plays Nic's piece at the start of his show to help Nic with royalties. (Plus the fact thatbit is a bloody good piece of music and very well played)

That's Mike Harding for you - consummate Folkie. Enthusiastic, helpful and knowledgeable.

Compare that with a contemporary - Jasper Carrot - now a millionaire - game-show host and has the air of cynicism at all times. Horses for courses as they say.

While the music is playing, Mike thinks up ways to play as little British or American traditional music as possible and mazimise the play time for R&R and C&W.
