03 Jul 11 - 04:13 PM (#3180857) Subject: Film - Terry's Lute From: PHJim In 1974, a movie was made about Peterborough luthier Terry Philpot. It followed the building of a lute in Terry's workshop. I wonder if it's possible to get hold of this film. Has it been digitized? I found this description by googling, but no info about how to obtain a copy: "Terry's Lute. Douglas Canton. Terry Philpot, a young craftsman, makes reproductions of medieval instruments." |

I saw one of his lutes for sale in an antique shop in Peterborough in the late 70's . Absolute beautiful. I contacted him about 15 years ago and he no longer builds lutes but makes furniture . |

He had a shop on Dublin Street in Peterborough in front of Edward Dick's "Ed's Music Workshop". I believe he lives in or near Lakefield, Ontario. |

Production credits goes to Douglas Ganton Films. Various production credits were given as French abbreviations, so I can't do much more than guess, but include a heavy smattering of Mr. Ganton as well as Terry Philpott (the titular luthier), Paul Quigley, Paul Coombe, Film House, and Chris Stone. A longer bio reads: "A young Ontario artisan, while producing a 16th century lute, talks of his craft and philosophy, in an old settler's barn filled with antique machinery he has collected." (Film Canadiana 1976-77, Entry 0712, p. 69) It looks like it was picked up by Canadian Reflections (CBC) -- perhaps you could contact them: https://www.cbc.ca/archives |

It's such a comprehensive database that usually you'll get a response on a name if not the work, but nothing came up. |
