You wouldn't have heard about it, as it didn't exist before this year. The limited places on it were, as far as I know, fully booked some time ago. |

It's run by Fay Hield and has many different tutors covering workshops, singarounds and lectures, including (but not limited to!); Fay Hield, Jon Boden, Nancy Kerr, Hannah James, Martin Carthy. It's called "Soundpost Singing Weekend"- if you google it, I'm sure it will appear. I think it's £80 for the whole weekend. :) |

I don't think there was anything particularly "invite only" about it. The people seemed keen for enthusiastic singers to go along. No need for carping ... it's just some enthusiasts getting off their butts and starting a new participatory event. From small beginnings... A cause for rejoicing rather than taking umbrage. |

I don't think the Four Fools festival is anywhere near Yorkshire, is it? My opinion, for what it is worth, there is quite a large following of the genre in Yorkshire and not to publicise it in the locality is a bit of a gaffe. |

I have quite categorically not seen no publicity about a trad sining weekend in august, sept or october. The fees may or may not range from zero to £80, and I have definitely been invited or not, as the case may be. If it were indeed the case that I had surely not been invited to this mystery gathering, I would instead squirrel away that £80 for my pension, which I also a figment of my imagination since the credit crunch, the public sector squeeze and the hacking scandal, has melted like snow in the sun. So - to other yorkshire singers, I will definitely not see you there, and I would suggest that we collectively prevail upon the lovely Mr and Mrs Duck to organise another Yorkshire Mudgather for 2012, given that the one Jane put together this year was publicised to the extent that 30+ of us all turned up, cost considerably less than £80, and it was truly excellent! |

It is taking place on 16-18th September at the social club in Drax, between Selby and Goole. The organisers are glad4trad based in Leeds. "Traditional singing sessions, featured guest singers..." including Brian Dawson, Ellen & Kevin Mitchell, Mary Smith, Grace Toland, John Waltham. I think they're hoping to keep it participatory (rather than concerts) so smallish in scale and manageable for a first event. Good luck to them. Tickets are £40 for the weekend but I don't know if there are any still available. |

I will (of course) announce it on Mudcat, and it will be open to everyone who wants to come to York and sing traditional songs in various public places until we're asked to leave. First 'venue' - The York Minster Chapter House, once we're kicked out of there we'll head over the road to Saint Michael le Belfry and from there to other Churches in the city, all of which have cracking acoustics and a generally tolerant vibe. I remember Rachel & I singing something harmonious once in St. Helens and being asked for more. I suggest we start off the day very early at the Miraculous Bread Shop (my name for it) on The Shambles where we'll fill out knapsacks with perfect loaves on which to to feast throughout the day. Those who can't make the early start, or any other late arrivers, can keep in touch via mobiles. All welcome; no fee; souvenir badges to be made up later, alomng with a CD best-of of the various field-recordings made over the weekend. Sunday, I reckon booking a big table in Ask, and then just singing our hearts out over first-class pizzas. Sept 2011? Sure! Why not? |

I have a social secretary that tells me what, where and when I can do things, less than ideal. The last time I went to the USA with the boys singing , she had my car crushed whilst I was away in a fit of pique because she wasn't invited. To say she is not a fan of the genre more like hates it, so I have to be very discerning about the amount of time i spend on the genre. Oh I had better qualify the hate bit, she hates me doing it, loves Hissyfit, Lannanshees, Blackbeards teaparty et al, seems it is just me! (probably - because i do have issues with officianados and labels vis-a-vis traditional,revival,contemporary in the traditional style .........and so on) |

The beauty of it is immediate human contact, which you can't put a price on, especially when it's right there anyway, and most Gloriously so, which is the whole point of Traditional Song, one would have thought / hoped - or else newtworking fora like Mudcart where one may set such things up & let people know where they are. Rapunzel & I will be there leading our 'Ballad' session on the Saturday afternoon, which usually sorts out the men from the boys - at least those who have't fallen for certain beastly slanders being spread around by two northern singing types who really ought to know better. Not much shit goes down in Folk Circles, but when it does it's of a very high and sticky grade! Thing is, it's become a grudge on the parts of the other people involved and I've heard on various occasions they've been openly slandering me ever since. The topic caught my eye because I have just moved to Yorkshire and was interested in singing weekends that may or may not be occurring but felt a little let down when people were saying you had to be invited, as were other people, it seems. So I thought I'd let the other people who were disappointed know about another traditional singing weekend that's going on in Yorkshire; in Sheffield to be precise. That is the Soundpost Singing Weekend, and it is £80 a ticket. For £80 you get top-class tuition by people who have studied and participated in folk music professionally or otherwise, to a high standard, for many years. The workshops cover many areas, including specialised areas that some people struggled with, particularly beginners, or those who can not afford regular tuition. So, I think for everything included above, £80 is very reasonable, especially when people seem to think nothing for splashing out £200 on festivals, etc... you will actually come away from this weekend having learnt a great deal, feeling more confident with your own singing and having spoken to and been advised by tutors who have practiced and proven their capabilities in front of many other people and who are not usually available for any kind of tuition. The reason I posted it was because I thought it would be an appropriate way to stop everyone slagging off the original event posted because they hadn't been invited and offer them an alternative event of a similar interest. I don't know if you have to pay for the original event or not, but it has been claimed you must be invited. For Soundpost, yes, you have to pay, but you don't have to be invited; it is welcome to all. And before anyone asks, no, I am not the organiser of this event and nor do I have anything to do with it; I am simply excited about attending and thought other people would be as well. *** Sorry for the rant like post, but I didn't want people confusing the two events further because it is not fair to the organisers of either event. However you choose to spend your summer/autumn, and wherever you choose to do your singing, I just hope you get out and do it, instead of arguing incessantly over mudcat! Thanks, Sinéad. |

If I need that sort of guidance I go back to the Old Singers, and the example of some revival ones too, and a world of great voices from other music the world o'er. When I say 'far away from folk' I mean far away from the simple joy of roaring choruses, fags and beer that shaped the voices of generations of great singers. That and the fact that in these times of sharp recession £80 suddenly seems like a lot of money... |

Whilst some of those lines annoy the hell out of me, others less so I do respect the views held by those even if a am opposed to them. For example, I am of the opinion that one shouldn't read from a book but learn the song however if the choice is between singing the songs and not singing them then what the hell (so long as the book isn't rammed down my throat!). Some of us have been fortunate to spend a lot of time with first class musicians and singers and it does rub off, those that haven't would feel more comfortable attending events such as mentioned in this thread. I am not so arrogant as to think that I wouldn't benefit myself from such events it is just that I am quite comfortable with where I am at and I am enjoying myself, and, I do have to weigh up the cost benefit I do not have bottom less supply of cash. So children, stop bickering about semantics and if anyone attends this event I would like to hear a full and positive account of the experience in this thread, share it with those who were put off by the cash aspect, loking forward to it Peter |

Absenting myself from Folk Clubs make this easier even though we were living in Durham at the time. Even when we returned (around 2005 when the Durham club had been forced to relocate on account of the Sam Smiths Issue) the pub wasn't entirely non-smoking, though the club room was... Still the beer, still the roaring choruses in which to fine-tune ones sense of harmony. Indeed, my experience of folk is of people finding their own voices through the communal medium of folk clubs. I guess I was just about old enough / young enough for this to be practicable. I've known some some great voices in my time, young & old, singers & storytellers, and all of them perfectly natural, which is the essence of the thing for me.
