York Trad Singing Weekend - Sept 2011

Just learnt about this weekend from Margaret Walters Website.

Can anyone supply details , please?

Nutty, this is the Yorkshire Traditional Singing weekend, a successor to the Dorset Singing Weekend which was run until last year by John Waltham. Very limited numbers, and fully booked. It is effectively in practice an "invitation only" event.

Sounds of dubious importance then.

I too found this one on Margaret's website and like Nutty I wondered why I'd never come across it before.
What a shame now it turns out to be yet another cliquey "invite only" weekend to cross off the potential calendar.
A Yorkshire Singing Weekend that Yorkshire singers can't go and enjoy? Crazy, man!

Try Helmsley Folk Weekend in October. Usually some Yorkshire Folks there, indeed I met John Greaves last week and he now lives there.

I smile at the thoughts of John Greaves at the Helmsley Folk Weekend. In an ideal world, eh?

PS - I'm holding a Lancashire Traditional Singing Weekend on the second last weekend in July and no-one else is invited. Just me. But on the last weekend you're all welcome to attend our open Ballad Session at 4pm on the Saturday of The Durham Folk Party.

With all due respect, I said "effectively" invite only (in that details were sent to people who had been to the predecessor event and were interested in carrying on although in a different location). You wouldn't have heard about it, as it didn't exist before this year. The limited places on it were, as far as I know, fully booked some time ago.

So, who are the "in crowd" then? I mean if neither Ray nor Nutty have been invited it can't be much of a do can it!

Tell you what, why don't we organise our own proper "Yorkshire Weekend" just to annoy them!

~There is another singing weekend going on in Yorkshire in the Autumn- and you don't need an invite!

It's run by Fay Hield and has many different tutors covering workshops, singarounds and lectures, including (but not limited to!); Fay Hield, Jon Boden, Nancy Kerr, Hannah James, Martin Carthy.

It's called "Soundpost Singing Weekend"- if you google it, I'm sure it will appear. I think it's £80 for the whole weekend. :)

Leaflets were being handed out at the Four Fools festival, among other places, for the Yorks trad singing weekend. I don't think there was anything particularly "invite only" about it. The people seemed keen for enthusiastic singers to go along. No need for carping ... it's just some enthusiasts getting off their butts and starting a new participatory event. From small beginnings... A cause for rejoicing rather than taking umbrage.

whoa, I think people were only commenting about the lack of publicity in Yorkshire, the proposed venue. I don't think the Four Fools festival is anywhere near Yorkshire, is it? My opinion, for what it is worth, there is quite a large following of the genre in Yorkshire and not to publicise it in the locality is a bit of a gaffe.

From: foggers

As a resident of the Sheffield area, that fast emerging new republic of folk music, I would like to offer some clarification. I have quite categorically not seen no publicity about a trad sining weekend in august, sept or october. The fees may or may not range from zero to £80, and I have definitely been invited or not, as the case may be. If it were indeed the case that I had surely not been invited to this mystery gathering, I would instead squirrel away that £80 for my pension, which I also a figment of my imagination since the credit crunch, the public sector squeeze and the hacking scandal, has melted like snow in the sun.

So - to other yorkshire singers, I will definitely not see you there, and I would suggest that we collectively prevail upon the lovely Mr and Mrs Duck to organise another Yorkshire Mudgather for 2012, given that the one Jane put together this year was publicised to the extent that 30+ of us all turned up, cost considerably less than £80, and it was truly excellent!

Subject: RE: York Trad Singing Weekend - Sept 2011
From: Paul Davenport

Dead right foggers! Mr & Mrs Duck ran a great Yorkshire folk weekend and we all had a pretty good time because, despite a bit of rain and the odd windy episode (weatherwise) it was well organised and publicised.
On this thread, however, who's Margaret Walters? How can it be a Yorkshire traditional singing weekend if Yorkshire traditional singers can't go? Surely it's a private gathering of invited singers somewhere in Yorkshire? Oh yes, Ray, we haven't been invited either. In fact , an event that isn't publicised is likely to be a non-event?

Can you make it in York as my bike is only just younger than my legs and I have to wait til next July for my bus pass (which is a swiz cos I have my senior citizens rail card now!) as for pensions I started paying for one when I was 19 and thought nowt of it, now it pays me a weeks wages a month which is better than a kick up the arse from a hobnail boot! Now I have been in trouble before on such events, erhm!

Selby may be a clue as to the organiser, or not!

YTFw/ed that is!

Margaret Walters is an Australian folk singer who has been here a few times and I got an email from her recently on her forthcoming tour! O she bought my double CD too!

I am sure that the weekend will be great sucess and will be enjoyed by all that attend ~ presumably no audience then? Probably know more by end of Whitby ff week

The leaflet I picked up at Four Fools was for the inaugural event of the Yorkshire Traditional Song Weekends. It is taking place on 16-18th September at the social club in Drax, between Selby and Goole. The organisers are glad4trad based in Leeds. "Traditional singing sessions, featured guest singers..." including Brian Dawson, Ellen & Kevin Mitchell, Mary Smith, Grace Toland, John Waltham. I think they're hoping to keep it participatory (rather than concerts) so smallish in scale and manageable for a first event. Good luck to them. Tickets are £40 for the weekend but I don't know if there are any still available.

Next time I'm York on a weekend I'm going to designate it a York Trad Singing Weekend. I will (of course) announce it on Mudcat, and it will be open to everyone who wants to come to York and sing traditional songs in various public places until we're asked to leave. First 'venue' - The York Minster Chapter House, once we're kicked out of there we'll head over the road to Saint Michael le Belfry and from there to other Churches in the city, all of which have cracking acoustics and a generally tolerant vibe. I remember Rachel & I singing something harmonious once in St. Helens and being asked for more. I suggest we start off the day very early at the Miraculous Bread Shop (my name for it) on The Shambles where we'll fill out knapsacks with perfect loaves on which to to feast throughout the day. Those who can't make the early start, or any other late arrivers, can keep in touch via mobiles.

All welcome; no fee; souvenir badges to be made up later, alomng with a CD best-of of the various field-recordings made over the weekend. Sunday, I reckon booking a big table in Ask, and then just singing our hearts out over first-class pizzas.

Sept 2011? Sure! Why not?

oooo touchy, can't speak for anyone else but I can for myself, of course I care, and probably would love to be there. I have a social secretary that tells me what, where and when I can do things, less than ideal. The last time I went to the USA with the boys singing , she had my car crushed whilst I was away in a fit of pique because she wasn't invited. To say she is not a fan of the genre more like hates it, so I have to be very discerning about the amount of time i spend on the genre. Oh I had better qualify the hate bit, she hates me doing it, loves Hissyfit, Lannanshees, Blackbeards teaparty et al, seems it is just me! (probably - because i do have issues with officianados and labels vis-a-vis traditional, revival, contemporary in the traditional style .........and so on)

lack of transparency promulgate rumours, is it a "worst kept secret" or a publicity failure? Whatever if people only have scraps of information to go on what do you expect. So, in big bold letters" guest again" . Start a thread with the exact details in the message body with a leader in the title so everyone has an unambiguous grasp of what is going on. Not true. I'd say we are very interested in Traditional Song and Singing, just not intersted in elitist little sing-circles where it costs £80 to do something you can do anywhere anyway for free. The beauty of it is immediate human contact, which you can't put a price on, especially when it's right there anyway, and most Gloriously so, which is the whole point of Traditional Song, one would have thought / hoped - or else newtworking fora like Mudcart where one may set such things up & let people know where they are.

Durham Folk Party soon. Rapunzel & I will be there leading our 'Ballad' session on the Saturday afternoon, which usually sorts out the men from the boys - at least those who have't fallen for certain beastly slanders being spread around by two northern singing types who really ought to know better. Not much shit goes down in Folk Circles, but when it does it's of a very high and sticky grade!

Anyway - all welcome to the Durham Ballad Sesh & it won't cost you a penny, but might cost you your soul if you've one to put into the pot and share in the merry crack.

Oh, just a bit of personal nastiness arising from an unfortunate incident a few years back which whilst not being my fault (they'd over run into essential down-time) I didn't handle too well owing to a very hectic festival schedule. Thing is, it's become a grudge on the parts of the other people involved and I've heard on various occasions they've been openly slandering me ever since.

Anyway, here's hoping for a merry Folk Party, we should be around for some of the evening sing too which I hear is back in the Rowing Club this year???

JUST WANT TO CLARIFY SOME THINGS:

(Sorry for the caps, just wanted to catch attention before more people got confused).

My name is Sinéad, I sometimes post on muscat, I'm 19, originally based in Kent, now in Sheffield. That information might help you recognise me (if, of course, you have met me- if not, this information is obviously irrelevant).

The topic caught my eye because I have just moved to Yorkshire and was interested in singing weekends that may or may not be occurring but felt a little let down when people were saying you had to be invited, as were other people, it seems.

So I thought I'd let the other people who were disappointed know about another traditional singing weekend that's going on in Yorkshire; in Sheffield to be precise. That is the Soundpost Singing Weekend, and it is £80 a ticket. For £80 you get top-class tuition by people who have studied and participated in folk music professionally or otherwise, to a high standard, for many years. The workshops cover many areas, including specialised areas that some people struggled with, particularly beginners, or those who can not afford regular tuition. This is includes practical workshops from tutors such as Nancy Kerr, Jon Boden, Hannah James, Martin Carthy, Fay Hield, Roy Bailey, Gavin Davenport, Vic Gammon and more, covering areas such as harmony singing, shape singing, tune singing, yodelling, ballad singing, "solo singing masterclass", "inventing your own voice", etc. Full details are at the link below:

http://www.soundpost.org.uk/events.html

As well as workshops, one-to-one lessons and selected masterclasses, the weekend also offers lectures, discussions/debates (which I think most of you would enjoy by the looks of it!) and numerous singarounds/sessions (which I believe will be taken in various places including the infamous Royal Hotel).

So, I think for everything included above, £80 is very reasonable, especially when people seem to think nothing for splashing out £200 on festivals, etc... you will actually come away from this weekend having learnt a great deal, feeling more confident with your own singing and having spoken to and been advised by tutors who have practiced and proven their capabilities in front of many other people and who are not usually available for any kind of tuition.

The reason I posted it was because I thought it would be an appropriate way to stop everyone slagging off the original event posted because they hadn't been invited and offer them an alternative event of a similar interest.

I don't know if you have to pay for the original event or not, but it has been claimed you must be invited.

For Soundpost, yes, you have to pay, but you don't have to be invited; it is welcome to all.

And before anyone asks, no, I am not the organiser of this event and nor do I have anything to do with it; I am simply excited about attending and thought other people would be as well.

***

Sorry for the rant like post, but I didn't want people confusing the two events further because it is not fair to the organisers of either event.

However you choose to spend your summer/autumn, and wherever you choose to do your singing, I just hope you get out and do it, instead of arguing incessantly over mudcat!

It is useless putting info like this in this thread ------ start a new one.
Most of the above ifo has already been made available anyway.

Nutty - it's an open discussion forum; people can & do say what they like by way of conversation and free speech. These things grow & develope of their own accord. Nothing posted here is any way irrelevant to the thread; it all arises in response to the initial subject. Think of it as all part of The Folk Process - just sit back and roll with the developments. It's just a bit of fun anyway.

Nutty, I was just clarifying the information as some people had started to get a little mixed up, thinking soundpost was invite only and that the other event cost £80, etc. Seeing as I have no involvement with either event, I didn't want to be responsible for people not attending either one because my original post wasn't clear enough.

Suibhne - the £80 is not a singing circle, it's a weekend of tuition and master classes, with some fine tutors. Sounds well worth the dosh to me.

Sounds about as far away from any sort of Folk I've ever known in my lifetime - or want to know for that matter.

Suibhne Astray, would you care to elaborate?

Martin Carthy, Jon Boden, Nancy Kerr? Far away from folk? Erm, maybe you can elaborate...

I love those people dearly but I wouldn't pay for the priviledge of being schooled by them; we're all self-taught & learn by our mistakes anyway, which is a life's work. If I need that sort of guidance I go back to the Old Singers, and the example of some revival ones too, and a world of great voices from other music the world o'er. When I say 'far away from folk' I mean far away from the simple joy of roaring choruses, fags and beer that shaped the voices of generations of great singers. That and the fact that in these times of sharp recession £80 suddenly seems like a lot of money...

Sorry, Guest above on 17 July was me. Dunno who next Guest was! :)

Ummm, not sure I really want my voice "shaped by roaring, fags and beer"!!!

Different strokes (and folk) for different folks, I guess.

Yes, Horses for courses! we are all different but lines are drawn across the genre. Whilst some of those lines annoy the hell out of me, others less so I do respect the views held by those even if a am opposed to them. For example, I am of the opinion that one shouldn't read from a book but learn the song however if the choice is between singing the songs and not singing them then what the hell (so long as the book isn't rammed down my throat!). Some of us have been fortunate to spend a lot of time with first class musicians and singers and it does rub off, those that haven't would feel more comfortable attending events such as mentioned in this thread. I am not so arrogant as to think that I wouldn't benefit myself from such events it is just that I am quite comfortable with where I am at and I am enjoying myself, and, I do have to weigh up the cost benefit I do not have bottom less supply of cash. So children, stop bickering about semantics and if anyone attends this event I would like to hear a full and positive account of the experience in this thread, share it with those who were put off by the cash aspect, loking forward to it
Peter

Just speaking from personal experience, largely centred on certain folk clubs in the North East of England throughout the 70s / 80s / 90s - the irony being that I missed the fabled Boden Years at the Colpitts in Durham because I was giving up smoking. Absenting myself from Folk Clubs make this easier even though we were living in Durham at the time. Even when we returned (around 2005 when the Durham club had been forced to relocate on account of the Sam Smiths Issue) the pub wasn't entirely non-smoking, though the club room was... Still the beer, still the roaring choruses in which to fine-tune ones sense of harmony. Indeed, my experience of folk is of people finding their own voices through the communal medium of folk clubs. I guess I was just about old enough / young enough for this to be practicable. I've known some some great voices in my time, young & old, singers & storytellers, and all of them perfectly natural, which is the essence of the thing for me. But as you say - different strokes, etc.

I am told that the Yorkshire Traditional Song Weekend, 16-18 September, which costs £40 by the way, has a few spaces left for anyone who might be interested.

Contact details and fuller details are somewhere on this thread, in and amongst the personal bits.

Good to hear about both these events, even if they have been a little, intermingled...

Sadly cannot attend either, though the workshop weekend wouldn't be my choice. Am sure that everyone will enjoy both events!
