13 Jul 11 - 07:45 AM (#3186599) Subject: Lyr Req: Searching for song about Frango mints From: GUEST,Maddawg Norm Siegel A friend has asked me about a song she heard on the Midnight Special in the '80's. She states it was sung by a man and the chorus was something like:
"I'm a chocoholic; I don't need whiskey or wine. She also says: 'The tune for the verses was (I think) the same as the chorus and it ended with lines like "I really got Frango-ed last night!" and "I got loco on cocoa again." The line "I can't get enough of that dark gooey stuff" was also in there somewhere. "I suspect it might have been written by someone from Chicago given the Frango line, as Frangos were still very much a regional brand back then.' Can anyone help us? |

And yes, Guest 999, I'd seen that "confessions of a road-squid" message board thing about six months ago (I'd been looking for the song for a while). Unfortunately, the lady who quoted the stanza hasn't posted on that board for years and I was unable to get in touch with her there. However, the good news is that I figured out who wrote the song, and once I did that I was able to find it. I was right about it being by someone from Chicago: Richard Lemmon, who wrote the song for the birthday of a friend of his wife who was a serious chocolate lover. He used to call the song "I'm a Chocoholic," but now prefers the title "Chocoholic Waltz" and as it happens had posted it on YouTube a few months ago. He's also changed the last line of the chorus, he says he thinks people have different associations with "Fanny May" now. Here's the YouTube: http://youtu.be/hdhzEyMRqgY Incidentally, if anyone out there DOES have a recording of the early 1980's WFMT broadcast of the song, he would like a copy. |

I'll never forget my first Whitman's Sampler. From that moment on I was hooked. Now I can't get enough of that dark gooey stuff. I don't care if it's cold or cooked. CHORUS: 'Cause I'm a chocoholic. I don't crave whiskey or wine. Give me a double Godiva or a tall Ghirardelli Or a Toblerone I can call mine.* 2. One night I was driving home from a party. I had one too many, I guess. The officer took me downtown and he booked me. I had chocolate mousse on my breath. CHORUS 3. If you see one morning and I'm in the gutter, And you ask me if I am all right, I will tell you, "My friend, I did it again. I really got Frango'd last night." CHORUS 4. Oh, I try to swear off, but I never get far. I never know where or when I might belly up to a big Hershey bar And get loco on cocoa again. CHORUS TWICE [* On alternate choruses, substitute "any old time."] |
