Bastille Day in France today. I don't know of many French members of Mudcat but - if you're out there - have a great day on La Fête Nationale. Fireworks, food wine, dancing, celebrations in squares in towns and villages - what could be better?

At this very moment we've got all kinds of aircraft flying above our house.

They fly down the Champs then turn away to pass back over my area.

Thanks,I'll be at the "wine tasting".which takes place in our kitchen!

It is also my youngest daughter's birthday AND that of Woody Guthrie!

Just recently got confirmation that my gggrandmother was definitely French from Nova Scotia; last name Fountain, surmise it may have originally been La Fountain. And, of course, my Rog is mostly French by way of Canada.

Viva La France!

Thanks.

_ from a French person living in VA.
_ coming back from a Bluegrass Festival in VT.
_ going to a semi-Bluegrass Festival in ME [Ossipee Valley, Cornish, 21-24 July]

"Airstreaming" this week on various beautiful parking lots of NH [WalMart-Sam's Club,....]

My sister in France told me "it's hot here".

Y'all in France don't know what hot is.

Wish I was there.

Kat, if your grand mother was French from N.S, than you are of Acadian heritage.

Nostalgia!
I had 'French' coffee in a bol fro breakfast in honour of many happy years at St. Chartier at this time.
In the 1980s and 90s it felt like those four or five days were real life and the rest of the year a sort of penance until I could return.
Alas it was determined to get too big (for me) and now it's moved so I don't have to worry I'm not there any more.
Wonder what the new venue is like?

I have the parade of a few years back on a VHS that I made. Years ago I was in a small privately owned hotel two blocks off the Champs. In the morning, a tray was brought to my room with excellent croisants and a two-handled bowl with coffee, and a little jug of milk to add to the coffee. I have often wondered if that little place is still there. I remember that a man with a very good operatic voice would go down the street (almost no vehicular traffic although close to the Champs) singing arias for alms. His voice would reverberate from the walls of the 4-6 story buildings on both sides of the street. A wonderful little place!

Beer/ad., thanks, that's is very kewl...who knew...Acadian!

gnu, I'd forgotten Fountaine as to paper towelling...should it have been "Vive?" As to the La France, well, it is my last name by way of Rog so, I am really cheering him and his family, too!:-)

Is it possible that your grand mother spelled her last name Fontaine and not Fountaine? There are a lot of Bellefontaine and Lafontaine's but Fountaine is questionable. Just a thought.

I have an old book of hers in which the giver wrote her name as Fountain and that is what it says on the marriage certificate, I *think*. I'll have to look it up. As far as I know she came from the "Upper Middlesboro" area of NS. I haven't looked at those files in ages. Will do, though. Thanks, mon amis!

Kat de La France, if ya wanna be fancy! (Rog's relly came over with Cartier!)

kat... that's an English spelling and MANY names were changed when the books were re-written by the English in census surveys and in applications for deeds, various licences, etc.

Another example of such bastardization is the "Friends" star Matt LeBlanc pronouncing his own name incorrectly. My name is Owens... Ewens... Ewen... Eoghan... and it goes on. The "s" was added to the end of our name when my family was deported from Ireland and our name branded for sheep stealing. Better than what the English did to the Irish sheep. >;-)

Upper Middlesboro is a nice spot.

We New Yorkers celebrated a few days early with a Citroen ralle in midtown on the 10th, just to get as much attendance as possible.
