15 Jul 11 - 06:40 PM (#3188490) Subject: Paul Mills, Estelle Klein Award winner From: Big Mick I just received word that Mudcatter Paul Mills is the 2011 Estelle Klein Award winner. Here is the description of the award from the website: Each year, the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals (OCFF) honours the work of an individual or group that has made significant contributions to Ontario's folk music community. The award is named after Estelle Klein, a long-time advocate of Canadian folk music and one of the early founders of the folk festival scene in this country. Renowned record and radio producer, folk community leader, Paul Mills is the 2011 recipient of the Estelle Klein Award. His outstanding reputation has been earned over the course of a long and accomplished career. On a personal level I am so happy for my good friend and his family. These folks are the real deal, full of love and the joy of living. No one is a stranger in that household. On a professional level I am filled with pride at my association with this incredibly gifted producer. I have worked in his studio, and to watch him coax incredible performances out of folks is a wonder to behold. Read the full press release HERE Congratulations, buddy!!! All the best, Mick |

16 Jul 11 - 02:28 PM (#3188875) Subject: RE: Paul Mills, Estelle Klein Award winner From: Sandy Mc Lean I recall Paul dropping in unannounced at the Port Hawkesbury Creamery a few years ago and was gracious enough to perform a few numbers. In the land of John Allen Cameron and Stan Rogers the audience got far more than their monies worth that night! Way to go!!! |
17 Jul 11 - 11:54 PM (#3189794) Subject: RE: Paul Mills, Estelle Klein Award winner From: GUEST,Paul Mills Hi Everyone... Well, it's been quite some time since I posted anything here but I just came across this thread initiated by Big Mick...thanks, Buddy! I am quite overwhelmed to be receiving this award and the response has been thrilling. You know, there is absolutely nothing better than peer recognition and up here in Canada, the EKA is a big one for us folkies. To say I'm honoured is a huge understatement. Add to that amazed, humbled , ecstatic and proud. Thanks to everyone for their support and friendship. Paul |

20 Jul 11 - 06:48 AM (#3191274) Subject: RE: Paul Mills, Estelle Klein Award winner From: Beer I see the possibility of and afternoon or evening of "Folk" taking place. Let's see, there would be Paul, Bill and Sue, Mick, Murdoch,Chris Rawlings, Chris Crilly,Ron Bankley would come I'm sure along with his buddy Michael Dion. Allan Fraser would certainly come and others. Jeri would make a special trip from New Hampshire. I'm almost sure i could get enough folks to provide sleep over. ad. |
20 Jul 11 - 08:09 AM (#3191319) Subject: RE: Paul Mills, Estelle Klein Award winner From: GUEST,bankley Now that WOULD be something, Adrien.... but who would want to sleep ??? I believe the last time I saw Paul was at Folk Alliance in Cleveland.. he was running sound at the Borealis room which also doubled for some CBC radio tapings... Willie Dunn and I got up for a soundcheck... as an aside, Paul asked 'What's wrong with Willie's guitar?" I said "It's f*cked up'... at that time he was still playing his old Framus warhorse with an action that would cripple Frankenstein and bad intonation above the 3rd fret... Paul lent his gorgeous Laskin flat-top to Willie for the show... man, I was happy.. it made my job a lot easier... I had been bugging him to get a better axe for awhile... he did eventually Paul, I'll never forget that kindness...thanks again, and a big congrats on the award... Ron |
20 Jul 11 - 09:16 AM (#3191344) Subject: RE: Paul Mills, Estelle Klein Award winner From: Big Mick That is a perfect story to describe this good man. One of the hallmarks of greatness of spirit is that the generosity exhibited is never seen by those folks who offer it as anything other than how it should be. I have seen Paul's generosity over and over again. It is so gratifying, yet not surprising, to see his OCFF peers reward him in this way. It is one of the reasons I have become such a fan of the Toronto folk community. All the best, Mick |
23 Jul 11 - 01:28 AM (#3193283) Subject: RE: Paul Mills, Estelle Klein Award winner From: GUEST Gee, I had completely forgotten about the Willie Dunn guitar incident in Cincinnati. One of the things getting an award like this is the chance to look back and remember. It's great fun. Thanks for the stories! Adrien, that gathering you're suggesting sounds like a blast and a half! Paul |
23 Jul 11 - 08:16 PM (#3193944) Subject: RE: Paul Mills, Estelle Klein Award winner From: Beer If i thought that the list(names mentioned) would be interested (more could be added) I could come up with a tentative plan and we could throw ideas around for a few months. I am willing to put something together that we could all have fun with. Maybe we could start by asking if your for a next early July meet of some sorts. I say early July because that would be a good time for Chris Rawlings as this would be the best time for him because of his apple farming chores. ad. |
