Who's coming to Getaway 2011?

18 Jul 11 - 01:26 PM (#3190136)
Subject: Who's coming to Getaway 2011?
From: GUEST,Celtaddict (Cookie crumbled?)

Hard to believe that, though the program idea thread is humming along, I have not seen a thread for who is coming, which is not only fun in raising anticipation but can be very helpful in planning transport and other needs.
I plan to be there!

Kris is going to teach one more year, so it still isn't practicable for her. I asked her this afternoon, "How angry would you be if I went to the Getaway by myself?" She said she wouldn't be. So I'm considering it, but need a lot more information about how it works before I decide.

Hi Peter -- it would be great to see you at the Getaway, with or without Kris. Maybe next year for her?   So what "information about how it works" do you need? I will be happy to answer any questions you may have, as, I'm sure, would Charlie Baum and any number of others. Very shortly the registration form will be posted on the FSGW web site (I'll let everyone know on this thread and the program thread when it's ready), and that will let you know about costs, etc. The August FSGW Newsletter will have an article about the Getaway, and that will also be available on the website, about the first of the month. If you have other questions, just ask! Hope you can make it!

Alas, Edmund and I will not be there because we can't be in two places at the same time. We are going to Ireland for three weeks, and unfortunately the period of our absence overlaps the Getaway.

I sincerely hope the wonders of the Frank Hart festival make up for a complete miss of the Getaway for the first time since we first heard of it, back in the Ramblewood days (actually, 2000 ...)

Questions I can't find answers to on the website:

What does it cost?

What kind of accommodations are there? Rooms? Bunkhouse? Tenting space? RV or camper space? All of the above?

What does the cost include? Meals? Bed? Camping space? Snacks? Unlimited free beer?

As a church facility, do they forbid dirty songs? (There goes half my songlist!)

will there be people singing very long songs in obscure alternate tunings about how miserable they are because the Universe doesn't understand their need to be loved?

More as they occur to me....

Subject: RE: Who's coming to Getaway 2011?
From: Charlie Baum

The prices and this year's registration form will be posted shortly (probably with a week, certainly by August 1), and the prices are essentially the same as last year. It depends on how long you come for and whether or not you're a member of FSGW or not, but it's no more than $206 if you come for the entire weekend (Friday dinner through Monday breakfast) as a non-member requiring a lower bunk.

Accommodation is in rooms with about 4 beds each, some of which are upper bunks. The rooms are heated and air-conditioned, and there are bathrooms down the hall. Given that there are only 50 rooms, privacy is hard to come by, but we can assign you to room with friends or acquaintances (or kinfolk, if they're coming). If you'd prefer to tent or RV or camp, that's quite possible [no hook-ups], and you even gain in privacy (though, alas, it's not really much cheaper).

Friday night's dinner is a pot-luck that goes on 'til very late, since people arrive at all hours and gathering everyone together at a given dinner hour is harder than herding squirrels. Your fee covers all remaining meals (Saturday breakfast onward) and midnight snacks. Also lodging and all the music you can consume. There is unlimited free coffee and tea, but because the place is run by Methodists, we can't offer free beer (or even non-free beer). On the other hand, they don't care what we sing, so the raunchiness of your repertoire is limited by your sense of propriety among the other attendees rather than any saintly ministration or administration.

Peter,

In last year's parody work shop I sang a song from the Civil War. It's topic was the South's collection of the contents of ladies chamber pots to process into nitre for gunpowder. There were no kids present, but it certainly wasn't clean. I would really look forward to meeting you again. We last met at the Mudcat party that Barry Finn hosted over a decade ago.

If you have any new CD's bring them along for sail. The same for any old CD's, but I have the first two Woodchuck's Revenge tapes.

Are you still undecided about the Getaway?

Three drivers are better than one, and help with the gas is a positive, plus you may indeed sleep in your van.

What else do you need?

MY REPLY:

I want to do it. I think the only thing I'm not sure of is when, exactly, my kids are coming home. They said they thought "third week in September," which would be great, but I want to be sure their time here wouldn't extend into the time I'd be gone.

They are coming back with Nikki Kimball, one of the oldest and best friends of both of them: (link)

She and one of her cronies want to attempt a new time record for the Long Trail - all 200-whatever miles of mountain ridges.

Andrea is to be Team Doc, and has asked to borrow the van for that purpose. So I can't commit until I'm sure of their schedule. North Face, the sponsor, wanted her to do it during peak foliage, for the best photo ops. At those altitudes, that would be right around the end of September/beginning of October, the Getaway weekend. But Nikki wants it earlier, so there won't be loose leaves on the trail. I wouldn't think there would be a conflict, but if there is, I want to give them and the record attempt priority.

I'll let you know as soon as I know.

Since I retired in June, this is the first year I *could* go, since the first Mudcat year, when I was unemployed. Just can't decide about cost & privacy (not mine, that of others). Rumor has it, I snore. A certain Mudcatter really made me feel badly about it at Old Songs one year. Since then, I've been motelling, rather than camping.

BBC -- Heavens! You snore? Well, I've never bunked with anyone at the Getaway who didn't, so come on and join me! I snore too...so I bunk in the noisy cabin (Peace) with the all-night session, and often stay up throughout. Problem solved.

Honestly, it's a very forgiving scene. Full disclosure and excellent earplugs resolve a multitude of sins.

What's more, I know several renowned snorers who have already said they won't be in attendance, so when you think about it, really it is almost your duty to come and make up the ranks!

Barbara,

The FSGW folks usually have a box of ear plugs at registration for those who can't sleep through the racket some of the rest of us make - and believe me, some of us, me included, can make quite a racket.

Staying at the camp adds greatly to the experience. Don't let a past experience keep you away - ask to be bunked with folks who also snore or who don't mind the racket.

OK, only a little, and only because so much time has passed that I almost forget what the unheated *&^%ing shower felt like in the morning.

Hey, I can get a bigger sleeping bag.

Dani, most sleeping bags can be zipped to others making an almost unlimited size. Just saying.
Very excited about many who will definitely be coming, Max, Joe, Mick, Claire, MMario, et al. And shooting for a BIG 2012 should not discourage anyone from coming this year who possibly can. Just one more reason to plan now for 2012 too.

I'm not saying yes and I'm not saying no. What i can say is that i would love to go but a 40th anniversary is something i just can run from. 41 No problem.
Sometimes folks want to surprise or have a get together for that number. i know that Judy (wife)would have no qualms about me going but i would not feel right. However as time gets closer and if things look as if it will be "Just another year" I will take a look at getting on a plane and make my way there.
A couple of things i would like to know and I'm sure they have been mentioned in previous threads but I'm not going to start searching, so help me here.
1) What is the name of the airport that I would be arriving at?
2) How far from the airport to the camp site.
3) Do i bring my guitar?
4) Cost was around $300.00 and does that cover everything?

Joe, I will bring Judy's garden picture book if I go. If not than I will be there next year.

You know, I can pick up at any of three local airports, and carry one body and its sleeping bag and instrument no larger than a large guitar. I am mobile in Montgomery County. I can pick them up wherever, as along as we get to the camp by starting bell on, what is it, Friday? (Oh, wait, there'll be luggage. Hmmm. Well, we'll figure that out.) Thing is, it's a sports coupe two-door. Yeah, I think we should be able to work it out.

Yeah, it's out there. No obligation other than to refrain from editorializing about my driving (and agree with me on everything we talk about, including the 1954 definition). (I'm actually pretty darn good!) Oh, and to be on time, of course. American time. Not Unitarian time, Country time, Arab time, Latino time, Jewish time, or any of those other times that don't truly mean what they indicate. I don't want to miss a single minute of it!

"Now for another stupid question. The money for the event goes for what besides paying for musicians."

NO $$$ goes to pay musicians. This is not about having stars. It is a shared weekend, in which SOME participants have become well-known...and who often lead workshops or give mini-concerts, but who otherwise are just part of the crowd. You never know who might be sharing a late-night song swap with you.. ;>)

Some folks whom we don't see often are invited guests, and there is a limited fund for 'scholarships', but no one is 'paid', except for defrayed registration costs. The $$$$ goes to rent the camp and deal with incidental expenses.
(We used to make a decent profit in the very old days, when we used a **rustic** public campground and the rental cost was light...but it was cold and primitive...and we were younger)

so now I also making a side plan to lay some money each month for a trip

so while you are having good times at the Getaway this year , I will think of you as I will be working .

so sing me a song drink a bowl and behave .

Amos -- glad to hear it!

Skarpi -- Too bad -- we'll miss you once again!

Adrian -- Another correction to make: the cost is NOT "around $300." The top price is $226, for a non-FSGW member for 3 nights, for a lower bunk. Cost is less for members, for a shorter stay, or for those willing to deal with an upper bunk. The money goes for the camp, some other costs such as snack food, printing, etc., plus a small amount for FSGW. As Bill said, we do NOT pay any performers. Our invited guests get free admission, and that's all.

By the way, the price list and a link to the registration form are now on line, here. You can register on line, or print out the form and mail it in.

I have a ticket to DC booked and a return from RDU, but that means I will need to find a way from the Getaway to NC.    If anyone plans to drive from the Getaway to somewhere within a couple hours of Raleigh, please PM me.   I will not have much luggage and can even cut back on what I'd planned if space is an option.

It would probably work better for me to come to Getaway next year than this year, but I don't know if my "award" certificate is valid through Oct. 1, 2012. If not, I'd be wasting most of the value of the frequent flyer award by not using it for Getaway this year.

(I wish I could come every year like some Getaway addicts do, but my pocketbook says otherwise.)

Looks like I don't have the option of using my frequent flyer award beyond June, 2012, so I guess I'll be coming to Getaway this year even though I really SHOULD be home working on house repairs. (Oh the sacrifices we folkies make!)

Genie-- if you redirect to BWI we can share a car. David I. is driving from New Jersey this year. LEJ is still vacillating, so I am saving up to buy him a vacillectomy.

Thanks, Amos and Janie.

At this point I probably can redirect to BWI-- Amos, did you mean incoming or outgoing?--and I'd be glad to share a car with you and David. DK if I want to change the arriving flight though, because I have a direct flight (to Dulles) which is a lot less tiring than changing planes.   Not sure whether it's still possible for me to change my return flight from RDU to BWI or, if so, jow much longer I have to make the change.

Guess, like Ernie, I have to start vacillating soon.   (Does Vacillene help that?)

More important than that last post -Don't forget to bring something to the auction and don't forget to plan on buying something at the auction.

All the proceeds from the Getaway auction are used to provide scholarship funds to help people attend who otherwise might not be able to afford the fee. Last year the auction made a bit of a come-back after doing fairly poorly for the 1st 2 years at West River. Let's make that a trend. Even I can't come, I'll try to get something over to Abby (are you listening Abby?) to put in the auction.

Items big and small and of all persuasions are welcomed. "One man's trash is another man's treasure" and 99.999999% of items brought over the years I have been involved with auction fall into that category.

If it really is trash, however, (and the bar is low,) please trash it. (dirty stuffed or cloth items, broken or filthy toys that you would not allow your own child to handle, the actual dust bunnies from the corners of the closet you cleaned out, stained coasters that are beyond rejuvenation, etc.)

AMOS... I may need another cup of coffee to clear that image from my brain.

Okay so I'm still determined to get there, my quick overnight with Bill and Rita has stretched into two nights as I cross my fingers and hope that the ignition coil is all that is wrong with my car.

Dear husband woke me this morning to ask where the sump pumps were... yup more water in the basement less than 24 hours after we got a new hot water heater! But I did get to use my great breadth of experience helping clear up the mere annoyance of water at Bill and Rita's this am.

Hell or high water I will get to Getaway!

I remember my mom had the sheet music in her piano bench. I don't recall she ever played or sang it, tho:

The Song of the Seabees
(1943)

Words by Sam M. Lewis
Music by Peter de Rose

We're the Seabees of the Navy
We can build and we can fight
We'll pave the way to victory
And guard it day and night
And we promise that we remember
    The "Seventh of December"

We're the Seabees of the Navy
    Bees of the Seven Seas

    The Navy wanted men
    That's where we came in
    Mister Brown and Mister Jones
The Owens, the Cohens and Flynn
    The Navy wanted more
    Of Uncle Sammy's kin
    So we all joined up
And brother we're in to win.

http://www.31st-seabees.com/seabee_song.htm
& Judy Garland: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqtF686DEdM

Dumb song but was important propaganda for us then.

From Ernie Johnson and me, last year:

CHO: Lord willing and the creek don't rise, I'm going to the Getaway.
Out where the lonesome seagull cries, on the edge of the Chesapeake Bay
All the folks stay up all night,
Making music 'til the rooster cries,
Lord willing and the creek don't rise,
I'm going to the Getaway.

I've gone to work most every day
The whole dang year it seems
Trying to forget the singing sounds
That show up in my dreams
I've been through bitter winter months
And hellish summer days
And now by God, I've had enough,
I'm going to the Getaway

CHO

I long to see a country road
That leads up the shore
With folkies wandering 'cross fields,
Two hundred souls or more.
I hunger for the songs they sing
And the funny things they say,
So mister, stamp my ticket quick,
I'm going to the Getaway!

CHO

I want to hear old Bobert shout
The blues when they're done right.
And watch Big Mick put the Irish out
When he gets a little tight
I want to hear sweet Liz LaPrelle
Hold the whole place in her sway.
By God I'm done with the working life,
I am going to the Getaway.

CHO

When I get there I'll drink all night,
And sing a thousand tunes
And if I watch the windows right,
Catch sight of Ernie's moon!
I'll listen to the cowboy songs
While the ladies dance and play.
Be still my heart, I'm off to start
And I'm going to the Getaway!

(CHO, turnaround repeat on last two lines)

I'm working on the return logistics now. We can catch a bus home on Monday either from Greenbelt or from Union Station - or from Baltimore - it all depends on when/where we can catch a ride to.

I'm looking forward to it, though once again I think it'll just be me. This could change if anyone else is expecting to have small children. When I was a kid at the Getaway, lo these many years ago, there used were enough children that we could keep each other company. At the moment, it looks like Kiran would be the only one, and at 4 he's just not yet of an age to sit quietly in workshops all day (even though he loves the music), or to play happily without other kids.

So this is a plea for future years - if you have young kids, bring 'em, and let me know! And if you are bringing kids this year, please let me know and we'll talk.

On the bright side, I get to co-lead the "Singing to the Choir" workshop with Sally Rogers again, and co-lead the "Fishing and Fishermen" workshop with Nick Apollonio! Not to mention the workshops I get to just GO to....

And I'm bringing Dick Swain - does that count for anything?

If you haven't registered yet, register NOW! (Even if you have to bring money with you to the event to pay for it, or mail a check.)

We need to let the folks who run West River know our numbers--especially how many meals to prepare. And if you have allergies or special dietary needs, we need to tell the camp NOW so they can purchase the right amount of food for us and work around whatever dietary restrictions we have among us.

There's still room, but we need to know who is coming NOW.
(If you're a maybe, post on this thread NOW, and we'll count you with weighted probability.)

Sure looks as if it's shaping up for another great weekend.

I'll be picking up Bradfordian (Barrie) when he transports to Portland late Monday (after Getaway), assuming he's in any shape to travel. Be kind to him, and be sure to thank him for all the work he's done shepherding the new set of Mudcat CDs.

Well, after 5 years in a row, I am bowing out of this year's event. It's just too wearing to spend 4 days at a trade show, then arrive at BWI Saturday night for the remaining half of the Getaway. I hope to return next year if I don't have a conflict. I know, Amos, "delegate". But I would have to clone me to delegate this one.

I'll be thinking of all of you and that beautiful Chesapeake shore. Sing one for me.

To, I'm certain, everyone's disappointment, I have to cancel.

I awakened today with three fingers of my left hand numb and/or tingling...and I went to the doctor as quickly as I could. Not a stroke or a heart attack, but I somehow managed to kill some of the cells which surround the ulnar nerve in my left arm. These will take about three weeks to regenerate (better the cells than the nerve!) and during that time I'm one-handed. I'm not supposed to lift anything over about 20 pounds and it would be best if I kept my left arm dangling at my side (not possible!).

The doctor said that this is sometimes called "Saturday Night Palsy" and it comes from keeping your elbow on a table supporting your head for hours due to a drinking bout. I wish!

So, you will all have to do without me this year. It will be difficult, especially on the ladies, but do your best to bear up under the strain and realize that there's always next year.

Has come in here to dwell.

cho: Which side are you on?
Which side are you on?
Which side are you on?
Which side are you on?

My daddy was a music stand
And I'm a music stand's son,
And I'll stick with the union,
Till every battle's won.

They say in St. David's,
There is no neutral course,
You'll either be a union man,
Or a thug for Jacqui Morse.

Oh, workers can you stand it?
Oh, tell me how you can.

Also, I'm getting the impression that we can probably use a couple extra sleeping bags during the Getaway, if anyone has some that they don't mind lending.    (Given what the airlines are charging for baggage these days, it helps not to have to bring bedding that's that big.)

And, Bruce, I will definitely buy some ginger again this year if you bring it!

But I really want to give praise to the Washington taxi drivers. On arrival in Silver Springs, I got my luggage from the boot of the cab but as it was humid and dark, my jacket got overlooked.
One hour later the cab driver turned up with the jacket.
So I declare my gratitude. Thank you taxi drivers of Washington DC.

But I can't extend that gratitude to the Boston airport security who confiscated my 4 bottles of wine for the party. I flew to Washington from Tornto via Boston, so I was expecting to not have to go thru security again! Doh (I'll just have a dry weekend!)

I should have a box of various strings. Guitar, banjo, mandolin, violin, viola, dulcimer, etc, plus a set of .009 to .022 gauge ( dozen of each gauge) in case I need to go fishing. It seems easiest just to bring the entire box- see me if you find yourself in need.

Having a minor problem with the ginger ( they were out!) but am working on it.

Will have a number of student violins/violas from $50 to $200 ( case and cheap (but usable) bow included) that I have been practicing repairs on. Any music teachers that want a bunch PLEASE see me! I will also bring my Octave Violin(s) and at least one chincello. Probably an Octave mandolin, as well.

REMEMBER to bring items for the Auction!

AND a MUG to save on paper cups! ( Some will be available for use, just donate to the Scholarship Fund.)

We had a bit of a scare - Kendall started with possible cold symptoms last night and we weren't sure, even this morning, if he would be fit to go. Turns out to be sinus trouble and visit to the pharmacy has sorted out what he needs.

He's now feeling (and looks)100 times better than he did three hours ago so I don't have to do a solo act again!

More than most years, this Getaway is going to involve some painful decisions of where to go. What a great problem to have!

Jacqui and Kendall, I'm glad to hear everything is okay!

Here's one more thing to bring - bug repellent. With all of the rain the Mid-Atlantic has had this year, the mosquitoes have been plentiful and fierce. Hopefully the cool weather this weekend will keep them at bay (so to speak) but it doesn't hurt to be prepared, in any case.

I'm donating 3 large travel mugs to the scholarship auction and will designate them as "buy now" items, so if you need a mug, check the auction tables early.

Midchuck, if you bring the extra sleeping bags I have no doubt they'll be appreciated, if only as extra padding on the not-so-soft cabin mattresses.

Bradfordian, sorry about your wine-smuggling travails (what a loss!) but don't worry about having to be "dry" during Getaway. It is, after all, a Methodist camp site.

See y'all very soon, accompanied by an Aussie and a Marylander.

Might not know what I'm talking about, but it looks like Greenbelt is on the Metro. Wondering, if siochain et.al. could take the metro to somewhere in or near Washington or the light rail to Baltimore, if some one could help out. Maybe a couple of some ones if rider and gear space is an issue? Maybe some folks could help on the trip down and some one or several folks else on the trip back?

Is a car rental an option?

If you live on West Coast USA and can't afford Getaway, come to Sunnycamp Oct 7..Long Beach Peninsula..very small scale but very nice. I hope. Never sure if the maybes are coming or not, in which case I will have a lot of huckleberries I picked for naught. mg

If you haven't left yet, you might want to consider bringing some rain gear. The forecast has changed. Not a washout, by any means, but about a 40% chance of showers each day. Sigh. Ah well, I guess we'll just have to have a good time anyway...

See you later!

Tim Slattery and I will be there. We're still looking for a base or tenor with a strong voice - someone who knows the songs or can read music - to help us make this a memorable Sacred Harp workshop on Saturday morning (in a good way!)

It's Friday evening. I'm at the Getaway. Thank you for the ride AHJ.

Game On! And I've had my hands the NEW MUDCAT CDs.

Lovely to see a bunch of US 'catters I've met before, some who are on the MUDCAT CDs, and looking to make friends with many more.

Looks like I'm the sole UK rep this year.

Many thanks to Gene and Sandra for their pre Getaway party/crab fest and hospitality -- much appreciated, (--- Them crabs aure are hard work!)

Look forward to a full report, if you make it to Maine on Monday.

Rose, Colin and Olivia got here OK. This has been a wonderful weekend, as usual.

Lots of great music and so many dear friends to catch up with. I got to bed early both nights - 2am Friday and 3am last night - had great stitch and bitch session with Jennifer Woods, ClaireBear and other assorted night owls last night.

Kendall's workshop went really well - his story went over really well. We're just waiting for the Sunday night concert to start.

More later..........

It has been raining here since Friday night. Backyard is a swamp and the maple tree is shedding in the downpour. No leaf peeping this year.
Hope you all stayed dry although the sound of rain on the cabin roof can be pleasant.

I'm waiting to hear from freda underhill, who no doubt is enjoying herself there, for the first time. Maybe one day we'll make it too, but we have so much family scattered all over the globe now that we have to save the money to visit them!

My consolation is that the weather here in the UK has been absolutely brilliant for the last week - an indian summer to make up for the summer we didn't have when we should have had it. According to the forecasts, it's due to go back to normal (for here) tomorrow, with the usual cool cloudy days with rain, and even hail predicted for Thursday.

Thanks for re-posting the message about Rose, Colin and Olivia. It's not nice to be somewhere else when you knew everyone is having great fun at the Getaway.

Just got a call from Bradfordian confirming that he is coming into Portland, Maine, on the Downeaster, not via U. S. Air. That does make a difference in terms of where I wait for him.

I wonder how many tons of CDs he's carrying.
