18 Jul 11 - 02:44 PM (#3190177) Subject: Pink Floyd: See Emily Play/Bike From: Dave the Gnome For reasons I will not go in to I was looking for Pink Floyd's Bike Song and made the following odd discovery. The album, Piper at the Gates of Dawn, had two versions - The UK one, which featured the Bike Song but not See Emily Play, and the US one which, you've guessed it, had Emily but not Bike. Even though See Emily Play did very well in the UK charts it did not feature on a UK album until either Echoes or Relics (not sure which) Relics definietely had both Bike and Emily (along with the classicaly titled Careful with that axe, Eugene) - I know coz I had it. Now, I know it ain't folk (Don't start!) but seeing as this is a trans Cheers DtG |

19 Jul 11 - 03:00 PM (#3190855) Subject: RE: Pink Floyd: See Emily Play/Bike From: Nicholas Waller See Emily Play was released as a single but Bike wasn't, and I got the impression somewhere that back in the mid-60s it was reasonably common in the UK for singles to be released just as singles and not also included on albums. Certainly The Beatles did this with, for instance, Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields, both recorded for Sgt Pepper but then left off when released early as a double-A side. Wikipedia says "The Beatles usually did not include songs released as singles on their British albums"; though these two were later put on the Magical Mystery Tour LP. On the other side, the album Days Of Future Passed by The Moody Blues contained their best-selling single Nights In White Satin as an integral part (the album is the story of a day with Nights at the end), so I suppose there's no hard and fast rule. All those albums are from 1967. |

We all had 'em in the sixties - well, I did - but try finding one now, and they'll come with a price tag of somewhere bewteen 150 to 200 quid for a good un. I've got a pretty good collection of original sixties sheet music, but I wish I'd paid more attention to hanging on to those two. I wonder if Lady Gaga and The Edge Of Glory will be worth getting and hanging on to for forty five years. |
