O/K who am I expecting then? Lots by the look of it & plenty of ticket requests from poeple not on our regular mail list. A fine collection of singers have applied. We are in for a good one, possibly the best one yet! Great way to celbrate 25 years of SIVFF & WHFF. The more the merrier!

Our 3rd year - still only dropping over for sat. Looking like our melodeon players coming so we can get into sessions.

Will there be another "as long as its not folk' session - just great fun last year and I promise to do my 'run of shame' even if its raining.

Great that Dyer and Swan are on - our favs just now.

The final events are being put in ink tonight.
They will include a tribute to Kieth Marsden, something to do with "silver" as this is our 25th. 3 x meet the artist,we have a pretty full prog. + workshops, concert, ceilidh, & off course plenty of singarounds & music sessions, + morris & belly dancing, but we'll take a look & see if time & space will allow.

This is a small friendly festival with a nominal charge of £25.
Nevertheless a few people make a day visit to the pubs on Saturday and lunchtime Sunday for free, as for any pub.
There are small charges for day visits to the various events.
I would really recommend the complete weekend, however, but bear in mind, this is a small festival in a small village, but none the worse for that.

Dave,

It wasn't an attack on Grove, just an explanation that the village has grown over the years. I realise that a healthy man, such as yourself, wouldn't regard it as walking!
In my defence, the 5-6min walk is repeated 6 times or more, over the weekend, but I am very happy to walk it without a lift.

Your comments about walking reminds me of the second "Stanford in the Vale", or, possibly, third, when I was stewarding. In those days there was an official walk in the magnificent Vale of White Horse.
I found myself, map in hand, leading said walk. The only trouble was I did not know the area at all! Nevertheless we managed it without mishap.
I seem to remember that you had great confidence in me, or to put it another way, said, "Get on with it, there is no-one else!"
Happy days!

What festival are you talking about and why put it in this thread!!!

'White Horse' and its predecessor 'Stamford in the Vale' are/were the friendliest small festivals going.

We'll be there, as usual. Getting excited.

Hi Skipy

The normal CGDA tuning is very "open" and it gives the instrument unusual voicings from both open and closed chords. The fifths tuning also makes for easy moveable chord shapes. The instrument is equally well suited to both rhythm and lead playing.

Hope that helps. Plenty of string players around at W/E to assist.

Perhaps nude morris dancing as forfeit, nah that would be silly!

This reminds me of a comment made by the owner of the B&B we stayed at for Sidmouth - it was a manor house well out of Sidmouth (it was all we could get by the time we booked). We got the distinct impression that he wasn't very happy having festival goers staying there.

He knew it was what we were there for, but that didn't stop him doing a spiel about how genteel Sidmouth is and how he thought it was spoilt by those ruffians who insisted on having a folk festival there. He also expected us to pay up front when we arrived, and when we asked if it would be possible to get a key in case we came back late, he said "Absolutely not. This is a 2 million pound manor house. I don't give out keys." We had to get back soon after midnight each night, otherwise we would have been locked out. One day when we went down for breakfast at 8am because Rob had a 9am workshop, he looked very put out and said he wasn't ready yet. Needless to say, we'll plan ahead a bit earlier and go somewhere else next year, where we won't be regarded with such suspicion and distain. He can give our room to someone more 'genteel' ;)

It seems horribly likely that WHFF will clash with Moira next year, as well as with the start of Whitby, because there will only be a one week gap between the end of Sidmouth and the start of Whitby (only 4 Mondays in August 2012). We'll probably be arriving late at Whitby next year....

Glad to hear it. It was a lot of fun! I was wondering if I could make a suggestion though about 'What the folk'? It was kinda disappointing if you had something prepared and had to wait to see if you would be picked, and then were not picked.

It is obviously very popular, so I was thinking of the way they run 'Gloom Doom and Despondency' at Sidmouth. People put their names down beforehand, as for a blackboard concert, and then you know if you are going to get a turn, rather than having to wait and wonder. I think even if we had KNOWN we weren't going to get a turn, we still would have stayed to enjoy it anyway, but the uncertainty would have been taken out, making it more enjoyable. Just something to consider for next year......

Next year we hope to have more opportunities to participate in general.

Hi Jenny, have taken that onboard, with a festival of over 100 fine singers we can't get you all on. Will look at ways of improving the odds as "What the folk" appears to be a fav. event for many. Same as last year for me, didn't even have time to set foot in the venue whilst it was on.

A valid point. I having known our Guru was to do the eye watering with laughter one. I did feel twitchy in case she was missed on the over run on time.
Such a shame if those with a contributions are left out though.

Name on volanteer sing list would be fine so you can prepare for your turn then and those who arrive first get their turn

Yes, Richard. In fact, Rob and I arrived there quite early, and if that system had been in place, we probably would have got on. I agree it would have been a shame if we had not been treated to that wonderful Hallelujah chorus. I used to sing in a church choir many moons ago and I could really appreciate it :) I won't tell you what mine was, but it did involve switching around to different voices, and was totally unrehearsed and silly. Maybe next year ;)
