Fierce Battle of Harlaw of 1411 to be remembered

Wreaths will be laid at the Battle of Harlaw monument
The 600th anniversary of a famous Aberdeenshire battle is set to be remembered.
The Battle of Harlaw was a clash between Scottish clans which was fought on 24 July, 1411, just north of Inverurie.
Hundreds of men died in the fierce combat.
A service will be held at the Kirk of St Nicholas in Aberdeen before wreaths are laid at the Battle of Harlaw monument at Chapel of Garioch.
===============
One hopes that 50,000 Hielanmen will be seen marching there for the occasion!

I suspect that I had ancestors on both sides.

Out of interest, did anyone reading this actually attend the memorial?

I suspect that a few of those most interested may have been at Cullerlie Singing Weekend - a local festival of traditional song run by the Elphinstone Institute of Aberdeen University.

It should be mentioned that the Cullerlie Singing Weekend is in memory of Tam and Anne Reid.

And on the Sunday..24th July Elizabeth Stewart sang the ballad Battle of Harlaw in the songs of conflict workshop and later in the marquee at the afternoon concert. Amazing.

We've been enjoying Bonnie Rideout's extraordinary commemorative album here. It's a collaboration with many stellar musicians and worth a serious listen. Clearly the work was created with a passion for history as well as a passion for traditional music.
