Obit: Alan Taylor (of Jolly Jack - UK)-2011

Alan Taylor (of Jolly Jack) has died. Martin Hall is now the only surviving member of the trio, as Dave Weatherall passed away a few years ago.

Unfortunately I do not have any other information at the moment.

Martin Hall rang John Cartain (Redmayne/Swinton Folk Club), and John rang me - I will post funeral details as soon as I have them.

RIP Alan.

Bugger :-( Some of the best close harmonies I ever heard as well as a brilliant musician and a sense of fun rarely found nowadays.

Commiserations to all his family and friends from Swinton Folk Club.

Dave.

Bernard, you just gave me a big shock. I thought you meant Allan Taylor. I have Allan appearing at Faldingworth on Sept 3rd.

RIP Alan.

Sorry to hear this too. I never got to meet Jolly Jack (I was at Man. U in the early middle 60s and used to get up to Bury regularly with my old mate Mike Richards, but I think that was a little before their time), but I absolutely loved their recordings.

Your music lives on.

Heard this very sad news last night at the Oddfellows in Middleton where Alan was a regular player/singer. A great character with a fantastic voice and playing ability on guitar and mandolin.

The Oddfellows players have just released their latest cd aswell with Alan singing 'The Banks of the Lee' on second track.

A great loss. Condolences to his family.

Sad news indeed. We last saw Alan probably about 18 months / 2 years ago, when the two surviving members of Jolly Jack (Alan and Martin Hall) did a gig at Uppermill hosted by the Hometowners with Tony Downes. One of the best nights we've had for a long time.

Any information about the funeral? Kath and I would like to go if we can.

If I hear details about the funeral I'll post them. Martin Hall's sister is an old friend and said she'd let me know.

I always enjoyed Joly Jack. They were annual regular performers at the Topic F.C. in Bradford for a long while.
I never knew them as individuals, but it is sad to hear that another good performer is no longer with us.
Quack!
Geoff.

Condolences from all of us at Southport's Bothy FSC, where the group were guests on occasion many years ago now. Jolly Jack were powerful, underrated and with a total absence of guile, delighting in the sheer joy of performance. I have a Fellside CD 'Rolling Down To Old Maui' on which they feature with others - I guess this is still in catalogue but are there other recordings?

Oh, how very sad - my conolences to Alan's family. They used to perform for us at the "Folk At the Malt" in Altrincham in the 70s - I loved their harmony singing. I still have one of their 'broadsheet' handwritten versions of 'Paddy West'.
Not forgotten, those lads.

Sad news.

A great loss.
Jolly Jack were our resident band at St Philips Folk Club in Radcliffe for many years in the 80's.
Profesional,reliable, funny and very talented.
Alan also performed in aduo with Martin Lynott
I still see Martin Hall every year at the annual memorial concert in Whitefield in memory of Dave Weatherall, the Jolly Jack colleague of Alan and Martin.

Nice review of 'The Oddfellows' cd in the Evening News review pages last Friday. The second track is a lovely version of 'The Banks of The Lee' sung by Alan.
