Does anyone remember "Kai Moore"? She sang a concert at "The Catalyst", in Santa Cruz, Calironia, in 1968. If you knew her, or know of her whereabouts, would you please contact me. Thank you, bob(deckman)nelson

To explain further the purpose of my search:

I am archiving the folk music I was surrounded with in the 50's, 60's, 70's. Kai was a pivitol singer in The Santa Cruz, California, area in the late 60's. She performed frequantly at "The Catalyst", owned by my close friends Al and Patti DiLudovico.

I have now learned that Kai married "Paul Snyder" and they lived on a small ranch north of Santa Cruz, on Empire Grade. I also learned that when Paul died, Kai moved to Oregon.

If anyone can put me in touch with more of this story, please contact me via Mudcat. bob(deckman)nelson ... still hiding out in Everett, Washington, USA

Hi Bob,

I came across your post tonight. Kai Moore Snyder passed away on Sept 5, 2009. I have had a close relationship with her for the past several years. I am not sure what information you are seeking but I would be happy to help, if I can. As you may or may not know about Kai, she was a very private person. So, I prefer not to write much else on here on this public thread. I hope you understand.
However, please feel free to email me and if you wish, we can communicate further that way.

Thank You,

Tina

I was also a friend of Kai's in the last years of her life. I knew her from her days with Paul in the Santa Cruz Mountains and then much later when we were both living in Oregon. She lived alone with her dogs on the top of a mountain near Roseburg. She was a recluse and seldom left her property, paying people to do her shopping for her and hiring locals to maintain her house and property. Towards the end she became even more withdrawn and less and less communicative with the people she did know from her past. She was hospitalized with a serious heart attack either in late 2008 or early 2009, I can't clearly remember when. She hired some people to take care of her and they basically ripped off all her accumulated "treasures", justifying this by claiming it was their pay for services rendered. She died from a 2nd heart attack less than a year later. She was survived by her sister Lani Moore and cousin Tom Scott. Lani died last year sometime. brotherleelove1@gmail.com

Hello
I am Bruce Weekley
Friend of Paul and Kai and son Amani since 1969
Paul owned Hair Hair the salon in Santa Cruz and Kai wrote and played music.
We shared a loved of music and Native American jewelry and weavings & photography.
I had many German Shepherd pups from her dog Brutus pictured with her on the album cover .... and carried on breeding dogs descended from his line for many many years.
I shared their lives through many years and lived with them for a time in the old house with the water tower up near University of California at Santa Cruz.
Kai moved to Coos Bay and lived on a cliff overooking the bay.
Later she sold that and purchased a mountaintop property with a lake and great log house.
It was after that I lost track of her.
She was off the grid and I visited her once there and she had a Cadillac limosine that the Rolling Stones had gotten to her in some bizarre gift journey.
Then when my letters got returned to sender ..... I could not get any information until a computer thread came up that she had died on Sept. 5, 2009
If anyone knows more ... please write me at bbbigbruce@windstream.net

Deckman, I just today saw your response. I apologize for never getting back to you. My email is still the same but I may have automatically deleted your email to me because of not recognizing you. I do that a lot.

By the way, I freely admit that I don't know everyting about Kai, but I certainly don't remember her ever referring to the brother that "Man with a story" has mentioned. Were you able to verify that?

Another small detail: The limo she received was a Lincoln Town Car, not a Cadillac. I actually surveyed the damage some little critters did to it. She told me her New York agent left it to her in his will when he died. There was no mention of the Stones. If she told Bruce Weekly something different it makes me wonder what the "real" story might be. She did have a tendency to embellish.

I don't have many details about Kai's musical career. My relationship with her did not revolve around her music, although I did see her perform a couple of times way back when, but if there's anything I can help you with I surely will.

I've been contacted by her cousin Tom who wants to get in touch with you so I will pass this website on to him.

Regards-Lee

Hi Bob. I hope this is the way to contact you regarding Kai.

The comment about a brother was in error. I've been trying to sell her guitar on consignment with a local music store and the owner seems to have misunderstood I was her cousin.

Is there a way I can communicate with you directly? I would enjoy sharing info without going through what appears to be a link.

i met Kai and Paul briefly at the "holiday commune" in the santa cruz hills in 1967. much later (97) i re-met her through some german shepherd folks here in oregon. she was impressed enough to give me and my gf 2 puppies. only 2 were in that litter, which i believe were the last which Kai helped bring into this world. we were honored.
occasionally we would be telephoned by her to her house on fox pond to help with minor emergencies. being only an hour away, it was our pleasure. (anyone interested in seeing her last house can use "google earth" and search 42 59 19.84N, 123 45 37.97W). the huge clearcut occurred after her passing. zoom in and you will see an awesome house and solitary location. she grew increasingly secretive and paranoid as time went on, eventually hiring some people to assist with daily living. it was here that her judgement began to fail. i too, heard that some of her "help", took what they wanted. a sad end to a really cosmic lady. PLEASE DON'T FORGET "REMEMBERING KAI" ON YOUTUBE (click).

I knew Kai ,in the late 80s early o0s and sang with her at her bouse in santa cruz. I knew Paul before he died and in the 70s i babysat Amani. Paul made clay art masks and kai also had race horses in addition to gsd. Acter pahl died of cancer i helped move kai, guidinga huge moving van out of her driveway! Anyway i sold some dogs for her. That was 91 i think.

I was a 1:1 classroom assistant to Kai and Paul's son, Amani, during the 1986-1987 school year. Amani attended a school called The Farm which was a collection of three buildings located off of San Andreas Rd and Spring Valley Rd in La Selva Beach----right in back of Renaissance High and down a gravel road. It was part of the Santa Cruz County Office of Education. I don't know if it's still a school. Kai, Paul, and Amani Lord were some of the best folks I have ever met. Eventually, I moved up to their Empire Grade property, living in a small one-room cabin next to the house. I would hear Kai singing in the kitchen! It was through Kai that I learned of Nag Champa incense which I have been burning ever since! I would drive to downtown Santa Cruz to get my hair cut by Paul. This was a wonderful time of my life--being with Kai, Paul, Amani, and living on their land.

Thank you for this thread. I knew Kai had passed away, but didn't realize she was a singer. I was a UC Santa Cruz student who was helping with her horses, Nippers and Noodles. Paul past shortly after I left for Colorado. I remember their beautiful srt, especially the pottery. And they had wolf hybrids that would sing...just beautiful to hear.
