The copy I've been working off is 2 or 3 years old now....so I wondered if it's necessary to print it off again. Anyone know? (Are you there, Izzy?) It is listed as a "Session". I should point out it is not a tune session at all. It will be me explaining how having been to the world changing experience that is "Shrewsbury FF Tuneworks Beginners Sessions" we went away, produced our own tune book, started our own session, have about 50 participants and a Ceilidh Band of about 30. The food tent often has a multitude of musicians hanging around in there - they are all friendly and happy to make a seat for people of all standards. Secondly, look out for some of the music in the Pavilion bar - it is always good, whether you play or not. Keep an eye on the stage in the craft field - some of the dancers are really quite exceptional. And I don't know about any of the other old hacks, but I find the procession of Morris dancers on Monday afternoon spine-tingling If you are going to see any well known artists it is often advisable to get into the marquee early as these events are very popular and it saves disappointment. Finally, make a point of buying a t-shirt ... OK .. OK .. I admit it, I'm selling them, lol .. but they are a great souvenir and the proceeds help keep this wonderful festival alive. You may be one of a hundred and you will probably see every instrument known and many not often seen at folk events. Whistles in D are easy to use otherwise anything you can carry. Watch out for low chairs if you have a doddgy back L in C# |

There always seem to be plenty of fiddles and whistles at the Tuneworks sessions....but the charm for me is the range of instruments folks seem to bring along. So, anything goes really. For me the more unusual the better (though if you're bringing a trombone or an aboe don't expect to find me sitting next to you) How often do you see a bassoon at a session? I saw two last year... |
