Shrewsbury FF Tuneworks sessions

Does anyone know if there are changes to the downloadable 'tunebook' for this year's festival?

The copy I've been working off is 2 or 3 years old now....so I wondered if it's necessary to print it off again.

Anyone know? (Are you there, Izzy?)

Gerry

ps Anyone coming to the sessions for the first time can print off the tunebook and/or get more info at http://www.tuneworks.co.uk/

Hi Gerry, missed this one - the tunes will be the same but page numbers have changed. Go with your old one and we'll keep you right! Cheers, Izzy

Friends may spot a workshop called "Here's a tune, here's another tune, now start your own beginners session".

It is listed as a "Session". I should point out it is not a tune session at all.

It will be me explaining how having been to the world changing experience that is "Shrewsbury FF Tuneworks Beginners Sessions" we went away, produced our own tune book, started our own session, have about 50 participants and a Ceilidh Band of about 30.

Cheers

We are new to the festival this year. Are there any tips ( apart from the workshop ) that we should look out for.

Hi Flora,

Couple of things you might want to look out for. The food tent often has a multitude of musicians hanging around in there - they are all friendly and happy to make a seat for people of all standards. Secondly, look out for some of the music in the Pavilion bar - it is always good, whether you play or not.

Keep an eye on the stage in the craft field - some of the dancers are really quite exceptional. And I don't know about any of the other old hacks, but I find the procession of Morris dancers on Monday afternoon spine-tingling

If you are going to see any well known artists it is often advisable to get into the marquee early as these events are very popular and it saves disappointment.

Finally, make a point of buying a t-shirt ... OK .. OK .. I admit it, I'm selling them, lol .. but they are a great souvenir and the proceeds help keep this wonderful festival alive. OK - plug over, sorry admins :-D

You will have a ball I am sure - so many wonderful friendly people.

Thanks Derek - I wasn't thinking of bringing an instrument but i might now - I liked the concert line up. Is there a preferred instrument?

What ever you do go to at least one of the Beginners Sessions. You may be one of a hundred and you will probably see every instrument known and many not often seen at folk events. Whistles in D are easy to use otherwise anything you can carry.

Watch out for low chairs if you have a doddgy back

Haven't found a programme yet so not sure whats on when. The line up looks really good - expect I'll end up missing some things because of clashes.

I had a look at the tunes - they look a nice mixture.

Details of workshops can be found in the official festival guide - this came through the post last week I guess it has been sent to all those who have booked.

I can find no details of workshops as such although Tuneworks has its own site with useful stuff on it:

"Is there a preferred instrument?"

There always seem to be plenty of fiddles and whistles at the Tuneworks sessions....but the charm for me is the range of instruments folks seem to bring along. So, anything goes really. For me the more unusual the better (though if you're bringing a trombone or an aboe don't expect to find me sitting next to you)

How often do you see a bassoon at a session? I saw two last year...

les - thanks for the info on the festival guide. I'll get on the blower on Monday to see what s happened to ours although I expect it will be too late to get one through the post now. Did anything else come the guide that I should have? We booked ages ago.
