Lyr Req: In Praise of Lovely Anne

I used to sing a song (many) years ago 'In Praise of Lovely Anne' and as songs go, it fell out of fashion. I can't get the air out of my head but can't find the words anywhere, I hope someone can point me in the right direction to finding the lyrics. I used to have it on tape but again I can't for the life of me remember who the lady was that sang it.

Aaaaaaghhhh... Now you have it nagging at a corner of my mind as well! Think I've heard Len Graham sing it in recent years. I'll have a look around.

A quick check on Roud Index shows a broadsheet called, variously, Lovely Anne and Hibernia's Lovely Anne. That may be what we're thinking of.

And I reckon it was Cathal McConnell's voice that was gnawing at my braincells...

Hi Martin
No it's not the version that Len or Cathal sing (they sing the same version) I used to sing it at the same time Len sang his version and he told me he didn't know my version. For some reason Mary Ann Carolan keeps jumping into my mind, so I have been googling for the past two hours trying to find out more but 'still throws up a blank'
It's not the link you gave me either, Dan Milner (Liam's Brother) doesn't sing this version either, well at least I haven't heard him sing it.

OK, Eoin. Got a few words that clearly separate it from the other one?

All I have is the tune going through my head 'day and night' and the last line, "In praise of lovely Anne"
It's so frustrating! I will get in touch with John Mouldin and enquire, though I think Mouldie will have Len's version.
Thanks for all your help, if I get it I will let you know.

Coming to this thread late (been off Mudcat for over a year), the versions from Len Graham and from The Boys of the Lough are in this thread Lyr Req: Lovely Ann (from Boys of the Lough).

In that thread you'll find a link posted by Joe to the entry in the Roud index which shows only a single entry for the song ("Lovely Ann" sung by Mrs. Rose Johnson, Roud #5083. on recording called Here Is a Health from the Arts Council of N. Ireland.) so a different version would be interesting.

I've tried trice before this to make this message appear in the forum, without apparent success, but I apologise if it's repeated.

Mick has nailed it I think. It the song from Rose Johnson. It starts 'You swains of pity, I pray give ear to me, a wounded lover' - OK Jackie?

The article has a link to a cassette recording also which is (I think) available for six quid or so.

It was I who had the cassettes for sale but, I'm sorry, they are long gone.

That's it!!! Great, John I bought the cassette from you years ago but on moving house I lost a box of Cassettes and a few books.
Is there anywhere I you can think of that I can buy it again or possibly get a copy?
Thanks again all, feeling good now as that song has been haunting me for years.

Eoin O'Buadhaigh (Jackie Boyce) cover is blowen!! drat!

GUESTJackie/Eoin

You need to be a member to use the PM system - which is less public than putting up your email address in a thread. It's up to you - you could join under either of your names!
