From: Amergin Well, it depends on what you're looking for....if you just want to listen to music, then go for the classic, if however you want to surf the web, read ebooks, play games, and basically anything else the iphone does (save for talking), then get the touch. |

From: GUEST,Ray I used to have the classic to listen to music and a palm for a diary, address book etc. I replaced both with the touch and wouldn't go back. The classic is a music player; although it pretends to have other functions. The touch is far more adaptable. It's basically an iphone without the 'phone or camera which means that you can also download all sorts of applications, of use not only to musicians, for reasonable sums if not for free. |

Quicker, nicer interface even if you're just using it as a music player, making it easier to find the music you want. Add on to that all the extra functionality as described above and you're on a winner. The only possible reason for buying a classic these days is if you really need the extra capacity a classic gives you. No way to avoid the shoddily-written pile of poo that is iTunes to get your music onto either device, sadly, but Touch for the win. |

Mind you, thats a hell of a lot of music and if you have that much, or intend to, then the decision is somewhat academic, except you don't have to have it all on there at once. Going back, I bought the 5G, (earlier version of the classic) and then was bought one of the first touch models. Using the same headphones, same copy of any particular music, the 5G (classic) sounded better. Not just certain types of music, but overall to an extent I reckon many could agree. Now, I have an iPhone and still reckon my old 5G gives a better (but not as marked as before with the first touch) sound. The latest touch will have the same DAC and other technology as the iPhone, but if the classic has the same as its predecessor, there is a chance that it will sound ever so slightly better. (The iPad sounds exactly the same as the iPhone.) A touch can be so much more than a music storage device though, much much more. |

You can have sheet music for thousands of tunes with the tunebook app. I also use it to do email, read the news, read books, look at maps (1:50000 for whole of Yorkshire £9.99), record tunes for learning, check train times or what's on telly, keep notes, to-do list and calendar, etc,etc,etc. |

Both my touch and classic were 60 Gig which should be enough for most people listening MP3 tracks. Admittedly this may not be enough if you're looking for lossless audio but I doubt if you'll find anything which is. As to iTunes, I'm really not sure what Steve is going on about. I've used it for years and nit works fine for me. Perhaps he's trying to run it on windows? |

Yes I am trying to run it on Windows, and it's a real shame that the excellent engineering and interface of the iPod itself is let down by the host software. This article from 2008 summed the situation up pretty well, and they've done damn all to fix any of the issues since. And yes I appreciate that they're under no obligation to even support the iPod on Windows, so I guess I should be grateful that iTunes runs on Windows at all ... but I'm not :) |

Having used it for 5+ years, I personally don't find it that bad. I'm sure people can find things to criticise with most software. |

My only concern with iTunes these days are; If you want to make MP3 version of say AAC, it duplicates the file names in the same directory that can be so irritating, (for a car MP3 only disk player,) and classical.... don't get me started on how iTunes buggers up the running order of, say, a few hours of Wagner. Other than that, it is fine, just fine. One thing Ray, the storage capacity has altered these days. The Classic is 160GB whilst the Touch can be up to 64GB. |

I know what you mean about classical tracks as they generally don't come ready numbered. I find that its a matter of checking after itunes has queried Gracenote to make sure the tracks have consistent numbers and that the particular CD has a discrete title. You can't expect any computer or software to know exactly what you want - you have to tell it. Thanks for the info Ian - my Classic packed up just after I bought the Touch! |
