BS: Between the Sheets

Picture, if you will, a cold Friday night. Four teen-aged guys riding around in some old car for hours after having made their beer run. Nothing to do. No place to go. Getting a little bit drunk and a whole lot bored. Sometimes we...I mean, they were so bored...Nah! I'm pretty sure they probably didn't ever actually light any farts. Anyway, they would pass the time and challange their inventive abilities sometimes by thinking up appropriate song titles and saying the phrase, "...between the sheets" after it; such as: Slow Twistin' ...between the sheets.

Early attempts at such humor included:

Cherry Pie
Tossin' and Turnin'
Get a Job
Love Me Tender
Tragedy
Johnny B Good
Oh, Oh Claudette
(or any of the many other "name songs" like Donna, Tall Paul, SuziQ, etc.)
Please, Mr. Postman
Only Make Beleive
The Thrill Is Gone
Rumble
Hand Jive
The Purple People Eater
Rock Around the Clock

It occurs to me that there are certainly some folkier song titles out there which would fit quite well here - like:

Hard Lovin' Loser
The Peeler and the Goat
Shackles and Chains
and A-Smoking His Cigar

Any additions?

Back in the long-ago days when I lived in good ole Dutch Calvinist Grand Rapids, Michigan, (before being rescued from same by Sandy and Caroline Paton) our very own Sandy suggested playing this game with titles from the hymnal. Church was never so interesting! I'm sure my parents wondered why I had suddenly taken to reading the hymnal during the sermon.

His Love Redeems Me
Jesus Loves Me
Great is Thy Faithfulness
Love Lifted Me
etc.

Incredible, Bruce! I wish I knew some of those tunes!

Most are in the lists of Country Dance or Scots tunes on my website. I have copies of about 1/2 of them, some being in the S1, S2, and T1 ABC files on my website. Delete that [below] after "Petticoat loose". I stripped off the song and tune but forgot to delete the '[below]'.

[Needless to say, I've been working on that list for several years, and that's all, not a few, that I've found.]

We use to amuse ourselves during church service when I was a boy applying that phrase to hymns in the song book.

Dang if'n this ain't sorta' like the game we use ta play. Reckon I can tell ya bout it cause Catspaw gone off an leff his puter all hooked up. Ya see when I wuz a youngun an Paw an Catspaw were in their thirties, Catspaw use ta call me "Turnip" and we'd play this here game jez liken y'all are but "with a turnip" instead.....now I seez that "tween the sheets" is purty funny and I wuz athinkin' that Ol Big Mick could be doin this here thing using "with a potato" Be like, "Doan Think Twice It's Alright with a potato" or mebbee like Peter could use a George Jones song like 'He Stopped Loving Her Today with a potato', er maybe "She's sweetest When She's Naked with a potato"......Ya know a turnip is about a dummass vegtabul and I never cud figger why Catspaw callt me that. It shur wuz a lot better in thoze days though. Now Catspaw jes calls me "Cletus ya fockin asshole."

We allus used to play this game with fortune cookie fortunes - some people used to add "Between the sheets", some "In bed" and some "With sheep". Add all three and you get...

Musical Etiquette 5: Voice vs. Possum between the sheets in bed with sheep

Aaacckkk! what a gruesome thought!

My last message cross-threaded with Margarita's here. My all-time favorite fortune cookie message, which I've saved for years, was:

"Your life will be exciting, when time permits (in bed, between the sheets, with sheep...)"
